Joao Pedro's strike for the Seagulls cancelled out Kai Havertz's expertly taken lobbed finish over Bart Verbruggen in the first half, resulting in Arsenal's first dropped points of the new Premier League campaign, so it is imperative that Arteta's side get back to winning ways immediately.

City have won each of their opening three league matches in comfortable fashion, and it will take a near-perfect season from Arsenal to stop Pep Guardiola from making it five-consecutive Premier League title wins.

They could hardly ask for tougher tests than Spurs and the Sky Blues up next, and Arsenal are also set to be without key players for their trip to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Mikel Merino has been sidelined for nearly two months after fracturing his shoulder in training, while Declan Rice's sending off against Brighton means their star midfielder will miss the north London derby through suspension.

A silver lining for Arsenal is the potential debut of headline-grabbing summer deadline day signing Raheem Sterling, who wasn't registered in time to play a part against Brighton last weekend.

Arteta has explained to the press that Arsenal are preparing for Sterling his imminent first Gunners appearance, as the England international looks to get up to speed tactically and physically.

“We have to see him, speak to him (about) what he’s been doing and how he’s feeling about it," said Arteta on Sterling.

“And try to find quick wins to get him up to speed as quickly as possible and for him to understand what we are looking for from him in the dynamics of the team. We will use that time to do that and get him involved as soon as possible.”

Sterling arrives to hand Arteta a proven back-up to Bukayo Saka who can also play further forward, and it is believed they're only paying £100,000-per-week of the 29-year-old's sky-high Chelsea salary over the course of his loan move.

Ian Wright says Sterling is just "meant" to play for Arsenal

Speaking on The Wrighty's House Podcast this week, fan favourite ex-star turned pundit Wright says Arsenal signing Sterling is a "magnificent" deal, and the former Man City star's transfer was just "meant to be".

“I’m absolutely delighted, the way the deal’s panned out,” said Wright. “When I heard Fulham were in for (Nelson), I thought yeah, I think Raheem’s on his way.

“And when you consider the deal, Raheem, family doesn’t have to move, point to prove, knows the manager, ain’t got a problem with rotation playing, experience.

“You think to yourself that is a magnificent deal for us, a really good signing for us, at 29, Chelsea are paying the majority, it’s almost like it can’t get any better. The only way it’s gonna get any better is when he scores the winner against Tottenham. That’s when you think this is it, it’s meant to be.

“You know when you see a player in your shirt… he suits our shirt, 100 percent.”

Head century piles pain on England after Warner, Labuschagne fifties

Travis Head thumped a century in a session to rip the game away from England after they briefly clawed their way back into the contest following another morning of self-destruction.Head made the joint third-fastest Ashes century, off 85 balls, and became the first to score a Test century in a session at the Gabba, to torch any hopes England had after Australia had lost 4 for 29 in the afternoon to lead by just 48 with five wickets in hand. Australia finished the day with a lead of 196 and three wickets in hand with Head still unbeaten on 112.Related

Head’s century came on the back of a supreme 156-run stand earlier in the day from David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne, with Warner making an eventful 94, while Labuschagne a masterful 74 in difficult batting conditions to set the game up. Ollie Robinson bowled superbly to take 3 for 48, but limped off with a hamstring injury late in the day while Ben Stokes also battled a leg issue and a host of no-ball problems, including bowling Warner on 17 when he overstepped. Mark Wood also bowled whole-heartedly all day for little reward.Halfway through the day, Australia were ready to make England pay as their calamitous start to this series had turned from bad to worse. Australia were 166 for 1 with Warner and Labuschagne having passed England’s first-innings total on their own, with Warner having survived being bowled off a no-ball, dropped at slip, and missed being run-out.A rare mistake from Labuschagne opened the door for England to keep the door ajar thanks to a superb spell from Robinson, only for Head to all but slam it shut. He tore into England’s weak links, thumping a struggling Stokes for three boundaries in an over to get his innings going. He then latched onto Jack Leach, just as Labuschagne and Warner had earlier in the day, hammering him with lofted strikes over long-on and powerful cuts and pulls. Leach took 1 for 95 from 11 overs, which did include four overthrows as England unravelled.Ollie Robinson took two wickets in two balls•CA/Cricket Australia/Getty Images

Head brought up his third century against the second new ball with a superb drive down the ground and celebrated to a standing ovation. Head had entered the Test as the last man picked for Australia, having beaten Usman Khawaja for the No. 5 spot, and might have cemented his place long term.England only have themselves to blame for their predicament. Warner could have been out on 17, 48 and 60.England bowled well in the first session without much luck as they induced a host of false strokes from Australia’s batters but only claimed one wicket. Marcus Harris’ lean run in Test cricket continued as he edged Robinson to slip for just 3. None of the 16 deliveries he faced until then would have hit the stumps but the slips cordon was ready and waiting for the eventual chance after he had played and missed a number of times. But while they may rue their luck in some ways, England were culpable in a variety of ways.Stokes added his name to a long list of culprits who have dismissed Warner off a no-ball, and has been guilty of doing it previously. The mistake was made worse when it was revealed he had bowled three no-balls in the lead-up without being called and 14 in total in the session, as the third umpire was unable to intervene due to a technology issue.Rory Burns added to his dismal Test match by dropping a simple chance off Warner at slip on 48. He also should have been run-out on 60 after he clipped a ball off his toes and took off only for Haseeb Hameed to stop it. Warner slipped and dropped his bat as he groped for safe ground but Hameed’s throw missed the stumps.Warner played 30 false shots in all including the chipped drive to mid-off which saw him fall six runs short of his 25th century. But his 94 was invaluable to Australia’s cause, and just one run short of his entire 2019 Ashes series tally.

Labuschagne’s innings was every bit as good as Head’s. In tough conditions, he left the ball with incredible judgement and pounced on anything loose. He and Warner waited and waited, absorbing long spells of quality fast bowling, particularly from Wood, before Joe Root finally had to turn to Leach. They assaulted him with a premeditated attack taking 31 from his first three overs. Labuschagne and Warner shared their fifth century stand and become the second-fastest Australian duo behind Don Bradman and Bill Ponsford to reach 1000 runs together, doing so in just 11 partnerships.Labuschagne’s loose cut off Leach cost him a certain century then Wood had Steven Smith caught behind with express pace before Robinson returned after tea for two wickets in two balls. He deceived Warner with some extra bounce as he miscued to mid-off before Cameron Green shouldered arms and lost his off stump to a ball that nipped back off the seam. It was just reward for Robinson who had bowled magnificently without luck. Alex Carey made just 12, pulling Chris Woakes straight to midwicket as Australia’s lead looked set to be kept well under 150.But Head put paid to that as Robinson limped off with a hamstring and Stokes limped through his final spell.

Crystal Palace could now hijack deal with £100,000-p/w "beast" open to move

da jogodeouro: Following a difficult opening to their Premier League campaign, Crystal Palace could now reportedly hijack Nottingham Forest's deal to sign a Champions League forward before Friday's transfer deadline.

Crystal Palace transfer news

da bet7k: Having lost both Joachim Andersen and Michael Olise to Fulham and Bayern Munich respectively this summer, Palace are still on the hunt for reinforcements before the window slams shut in just four days. On that front, the Eagles have been linked to the likes of Maxence Lacroix to replace Andersen and Raheem Sterling to fill Olise's boots in what would arguably be one of the most surprising deals of the summer.

The winger has been frozen out at Chelsea and stripped of his squad number in ruthless fashion. In desperate need of a move, those at Selhurst Park may yet offer him quite the escape route in their search for an Olise replacement this summer. An experienced Premier League-winning star, Sterling would undoubtedly ensure that Oliver Glasner's side pick themselves up from a disappointing start.

Crystal Palace set sights on signing "incredible" £30m+ Premier League ace

The Eagles have just five days to make their move…

Sterling may not be the only offensive reinforcement on his way, either. According to Fabrizio Romano, Crystal Palace could now make their move to sign Eddie Nketiah, who is open to a summer switch from Arsenal after his deal to join Nottingham Forest reportedly collapsed. Leaving Palace to hijack Forest's move, Glasner could now complete his attacking options.

Palace will need to move quickly and efficiently if they are to sign Nketiah, however, with just four days do what Forest failed by agreeing a deal with both Arsenal and the forward, who earns a reported £100k-a-week.

"Beast" Nketiah can unleash Mateta

Yet to secure their first three points of the season, Palace have not been helped by the slow start of Jean-Philippe Mateta, who is yet to get off the mark after a busy summer at the Olympics with France. But the arrival of Nketiah would likely go a long way towards changing that and unleashing the forward's best form again, given his ability to play all across the frontline.

Two strikers who outperformed their expected goals last season, Glasner could form quite the partnership between Nketiah and Mateta if Palace sign the former in a deal that could reportedly be worth up to £30m, should they match Forest's offer.

Set to leave Arsenal, Nketiah will be departing full of praise from manager Mikel Arteta, who told the club's website last season: "Eddie sums up what we want this season in terms of the squad.

“He was a player who was really disappointed not to start against Manchester City in the absence of Gabby [Gabriel Jesus], but he had an incredible impact in the game against City and he trained this week like a beast."

Roger Harper removed as West Indies' lead selector

Head coach Phil Simmons will take temporary charge of selection responsibilities, along with the team’s captains in the various formats

ESPNcricinfo staff18-Dec-2021Roger Harper’s two-year term as West Indies’ chairman of selectors will be coming to an end on December 31 with the board unwilling to renew his contract. Having taken up the job in late 2019, the teams that Harper selected won five out of 16 Tests, 11 out of 21 ODIs and 14 out of 39 T20Is.Selection became a hot-button topic for West Indies at the recently concluded T20 World Cup, where Jason Holder was not among the original 15-man squad to take part in the tournament. The former captain’s performances in the IPL – 16 wickets at an economy rate of 7.75 – only added to the scrutiny.Named as a reserve player, Holder was eventually brought into the squad after they lost their first two games of the tournament where West Indies went in as defending champions and went out with just one win. Chris Gayle was at the centre of another controversy around selection when he went after Curty Ambrose for suggesting he wasn’t an automatic pick in the West Indies team anymore.CWI will begin looking for a new lead selector in January. Until then, head coach Phil Simmons will take temporary charge of those responsibilities, along with the team’s captains in the various formats. That’s Kraigg Brathwaite for Test cricket and Kieron Pollard for limited-overs assignments. Jimmy Adams, CWI’s Director of Cricket, will oversee the process.”I would like to thank CWI for the opportunity to serve West Indies cricket in the role of lead selector and I wish the organisation the very best for the future,” Harper said. “I would also like to thank all those whose efforts and cooperation helped me to perform my role efficiently.”Miles Bascombe, who served with Harper, has also been terminated.”We want to thank Roger and Miles for their work and dedicated services to West Indies cricket in the last two years, as members of the Men’s Senior Selection Panel,” Adams said. “Selecting West Indies teams for international competition is a very challenging assignment, and both gentlemen performed their roles with transparency and dignity.”

He’s perfect for Rashford: Man Utd could land a "natural born goalscorer"

Marcus Rashford is a talent who has struggled at Manchester United over the last 12 months, scoring just seven goals in his 33 Premier League appearances in 2023/24.

It’s a huge contrast from the season prior, where he scored 17 goals, helping the Red Devils claim the Carabao Cup after scoring in the final against Newcastle United at Wembley.

As a result, he missed out on Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2024, with Rashford needing to hit the ground running this season if he is to replicate the numbers that he’s previously set in the past.

Multiple new additions are still expected after the signings of Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee, with the midfield department still the area boss Erik ten Hag wants improvements ahead of the upcoming campaign.

One player in particular has been touted with a move to Old Trafford, with his talents undoubtedly helping Rashford return to the performance levels he’s previously showcased in the North West.

Man Utd could sign Euro 2024 star this summer

Manchester United have been strongly linked with a move to sign RB Leipzig midfielder Dani Olmo of late, with the playmaker having caught the eye after playing his part in Spain's surge to Euro 2024 glory.

The former Dinamo Zagreb man registered three goals and two assists in Germany for La Roja, having firmly put himself in the shop window as a result of those standout displays.

Whilst he enjoyed a successful tournament this summer, his stats from the 2023/24 Bundesliga campaign are just as impressive, with Olmo having the ability to aid Rashford in his bid to regain his impressive form.

Why Olmo could star for Man Utd

Over the past couple of years, Jude Bellingham has cemented himself as one of the best youngsters in European football – starring at Borussia Dortmund, before moving to Real Madrid last summer.

He played a key role in England’s run to the Euro 2024 final, scoring two vital goals – including a bicycle kick against Slovakia which saved the nation after they were on the brink of defeat.

However, despite his recent rise to stardom, he’s been unable to match Olmo in numerous key areas, with FBref claiming the pair are similar players based on their statistical record across the last 365 days.

Dubbed a "natural-born goalscorer" by former La Masia coach Denis Silva Puig, Olmo may have registered fewer combined goals and assists over the course of last season than Bellingham, but he still made his mark in attack, averaging more progressive carries and more shots per 90

His impressive tally of assists last season could hugely aid Rashford in his efforts to replicate his goal tally from a couple of seasons ago – with the winger still possessing the quality to succeed at the club. All he needs now is the service.

With the club desperately trying to bolster their midfield ranks, Olmo could succeed in a deep-lying role, with his tally of 1.6 tackles per 90 demonstrating his ability to regain possession before excelling with his creativity in the final third.

His talents are perfect for Rashford, with the duo potentially able to form an excellent partnership at Old Trafford, handing the Red Devils a huge chance of securing Champions League qualification if both players reach the levels they are capable of.

£2,500-p/w Rangers gem Beale called "fantastic" expected to leave – report

Rangers are ready to part ways with another member of their squad this summer as they look to build a squad capable of going one better this season, it has emerged.

All change since heartbreak

Domestic dominance seemed within the grasp of Philippe Clement and co, but it was Glasgow rivals Celtic that pipped them to the post in both the Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup last season, leaving Rangers as runners up on both occasions.

Since then, there has already been major change at Ibrox. Experienced pair John Lundstram and Borna Barisic have both left the club at the expiry of their contract and opted to move to Turkish side Trabzonspor, while Ryan Jack, Kemar Roofe and veteran shot-stopper Jon McLaughlin all remain without a club after their time in Glasgow came to an end.

Meanwhile, a loan move for Mohamed Diomande from Danish side Nordsjaelland has been made permanent and the club have also signed Brazilian defender Jefte and Hamza Igamane, with all three 22 and under and set to bring fresh blood to Ibrox.

There have also been free transfers made, with Connor Barron arriving from Aberdeen, Clinton Nsiala from AC Milan and Liam Kelly from Motherwell, as Clement looks to shape his squad for the upcoming campaign. And that squad transformation is set to see a once-promising defender leave the club too it seems.

Rangers youngster "expected" to leave

That comes in the form of boyhood Rangers full back Adam Devine. The versatile defender was sent on loan to Motherwell for the second half of the season after failing to see a minute of action in the first part of the campaign under Clement.

In fact, he has made just 11 appearances for Rangers, with eight of those coming under Michael Beale, who was full of praise for the youngster.

“Delighted with Adam, it’s obvious he was playing on his weak side,” said Beale after beating Hibs in his first game in charge [Rangers].

Rangers defender Adam Devine.

“He was targeted from goal kicks, for a young boy he did fantastic. This season, he was supposed to be back-up to Tavernier and push him – like Patterson did.

“We’ve got high hopes for him and that wasn’t easy tonight, I asked him to play higher up the pitch; more energy. For everyone watching, he is a young Scottish boy we can be proud of. Early days but for tonight, well played son.”

ByTom Coates Jul 10, 2024

But the defender has not been a part of Clement's plans, and was left out of the group taken to the Netherlands as part of their pre-season preparations, a fact which Rangers reporter Derek Clark believes signals the end of his time at the club,

“Adam Devine, not going with the first team squad over to the Netherlands, he was part of the B Team that beat Blackpool the other day", he explained on the Rangers Review Morning Briefing.

“I think basically tells you everything you need to know, I would expect Adam Devine to move on this summer and I would wish him well wherever he goes if that is the case.”

Devine still has 12 months left to run on his £2.5k per week deal at Ibrox, but with new defenders having been added to the squad already this summer, his future looks almost certain to lie away from his boyhood club.

Gretar Steinsson pushing to sign £4,000-p/w player for Leeds in cheap deal

Leeds United have been urged to complete a bargain buy this summer as they look to rebuild after missing out on promotion to the Premier League.

Concern in the Championship for Leeds

A 1-0 defeat to Southampton in the Championship play-off final consigned Daniel Farke's Leeds side to another season in the second tier, and is likely to have incited a fire sale at Elland Road.

Crysencio Summerville heads the exit queue amid Premier League interest, while the likes of Wilfried Gnonto, Archie Gray and Georginio Rutter may not be too far behind as the Yorkshire side look to raise around £100m in player sales to balance their books before they can spend.

With money expected to be tight this summer, free transfers and loan moves will be even more important than usual, and Leeds have already been linked with a temporary move for Chelsea defender Alfie Gilchrist. Now, they are on the hunt for a bargain.

Steinsson personally eyeing Leeds move for Jebbison

It has been claimed that Leeds technical director Gretar Steinsson is a big fan of a move for Daniel Jebbison this summer, with the Sheffield United youngster out of contract as it stands and set to become a free agent on July 1st.

Becoming the youngest-ever player to score on his Premier League debut back in 2021, the forward has endured a tough time since and missed much of this season with a blood clot. But he remains very highly rated.

Speaking on X, teammate Oliver Norwood tipped Jebbison for big things back in 2023, explaining that the 20-year-old "will play at the top level & hopefully with us" when asked who fans should be most excited about from the Blades' academy.

And reporter Graeme Bailey has now revealed that Steinsson is personally a fan of the type of deal that Jebbison would represent.

“He is the sort of player Gretar Steinsson wants", Bailey explained. "Young, physical, something different to what they have in the squad, obviously youth. It would be a good deal, he is only young.

“There would be compensation to play but it wouldn’t be very expensive in terms of actual market value. It represents a good deal on all fronts really if they can get it over the line. It would be a decent coup because there is a lot of interest in him.”

It comes as HITC report that Jebbison is unlikely to remain at Bramall Lane after his £4,000 per week contract expires this summer, with the 20-year-old set to move on and Leeds pushing to secure him as a "priority" target.

Though Sheffield United have offered him a new deal, there is interest both in England and across Europe, meaning that a move away from the relegated side seems likely ahead of the new campaign.

Jebbison's potential arrival could spell bad news for veteran striker Patrick Bamford, who has been tipped to leave Leeds this summer as part of a rejuvenation of the squad.

Ten Hag has won two trophies at United since taking over as manager in 2022 but currently it seems like they are not progressing, despite spending around £200 million on signings this summer. And the fact that all these reports continue to circle that minority owners INEOS are looking for his potential successor is not a good sign. Ten Hag, however, remains bullish on his future.

WHAT ERIK TEN HAG SAID

After the 1-1 Europa League draw with Fenerbahce on Thursday, Ten Hag said: “Injuries hold us back in our levels – and also in our position in the league. Because when you don't have the players available, you can't line up the best team. We need more players, often available – and we have to work all together on this point. That is the players, the coaching staff, all the other staff. We know when we have them we are a really tough team to play and we can be really successful.
