Kohli and Hazlewood break RCB's home duck as RR botch another chase

An unhittable 19th over from Hazlewood yanked a third successive match away from RR’s grasp

Shashank Kishore24-Apr-20252:12

What makes Hazlewood a much-improved T20 bowler?

At some point, you’d think the toss gods would show Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) a little mercy at home. But once again, the coin turned its back on Rajat Patidar. This time, though, the bad luck ended right there as they posted 205 for 5, their highest total at home this season. For all that, another heartbreak loomed, but RCB turned it around sensationally to clinch their first home win – and perhaps their most dramatic win at any venue – of IPL 2025.The losing side were Rajasthan Royals (RR), who came into this contest having let back-to-back games slip out of their control in the final over. Their tension seemed to have defused when Dhruv Jurel, having scratched his way to 18 off 23, found his hitting range, and when he and Shubham Dubey ransacked 22 off Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the 18th over, the equation came down to 18 off 12.Related

Parag: We didn't show enough intent against the spinners

Then came Josh Hazlewood. He was ice-cold in the moment, producing a masterful 19th over of unhittably steep bounce – conceding just one run and taking two wickets, of Jurel and Jofra Archer in successive balls. It was left to Yash Dayal, the same man who had held his nerve in a now-legendary last over to deliver their previous home win, against Chennai Super Kings last season. And he delivered as RR lost by 11 runs after having the chase in their grasp for so long. The M Chinnaswamy Stadium erupted. RCB had finally found their voice at home and, with it, a long-overdue win that put them in the top three. For RR, this was a fifth straight loss that left them on the brink.1:28

Rayudu: ‘This is the exact template RCB would love Kohli to play’

Hazlewood’s knockout blowsWith 17 needed off ten, Hazlewood conjured a moment of magic – a pinpoint wide yorker that Dhruv Jurel shaped to scythe but appeared to miss. With little conviction, Patidar opted for a caught-behind review. Technology confirmed what only Jurel might have known – a faint under edge that carried low to Jitesh Sharma. A seemingly innocuous dot turned into a game-changing strike.Jurel, who had weathered a slow start and was just beginning to ignite, walked back, and with him went RR’s best hope. But Hazlewood wasn’t done. He cranked up a hard-length ball next that cramped Archer for room. It was as if Archer had been served a dish of his own, cold. The ball ballooned to cover, where Patidar pouched it gleefully. If Hazlewood’s final over, the 19th, was theatre, his penultimate over was no less telling. Having seen balls angled across the left-handers disappear, he went around the wicket to Shimron Hetmyer and pounded the surface with venom. Hetmyer tried to nudge him away but only managed a feather of an inside edge through to Jitesh. Only six runs came off that over, the 17th, and RCB’s grip got firm.Krunal tightens the screwsLong before the chaos of the death overs, RR were cruising. Yashasvi Jaiswal had lit the Chinnaswamy up with a power-packed 49 off 19, and Nitish Rana was stroking it with finesse. At 110 for 2 in nine overs, the chase seemed to be on autopilot. It’s here that Krunal Pandya was summoned and he delivered a breakthrough first ball when Riyan Parag, looking to muscle a slog sweep, only managed a top edge that settled into Jitesh’s gloves. At the other end, Suyash Sharma was equally impressive. Mixing up quick, skiddy legbreaks with the odd wrong’un, he kept the pressure on. RR managed just one boundary from the tenth to the 13th overs. Under rising pressure, Rana went for a release shot in the 14th, only for Bhuvneshwar to pluck a catch on the second attempt at short fine leg. Krunal now had figures of 3-0-19-2. The strangle was on.Virat Kohli scored his first home fifty of IPL 2025•Getty ImagesKohli, Padikkal fuel RCBHalf-centuries from Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal laid a strong foundation after Phil Salt’s scratchy 26 off 23, while a late dash from Tim David and Jitesh lifted RCB to 205 for 5. Kohli overcame a streaky start to get to a composed fifty in 32 balls. His early duel with a fiery Archer was, in particular, thrilling. Meanwhile, Padikkal made the most of two dropped chances to notch up a second straight half-century.Just as the platform was set for a lift-off, RR struck back, removing Kohli, Padikkal, and Patidar in quick succession. But David and Jitesh picked up 42 runs in just 19 balls to cap the innings with a flourish. In a match that swung wildly from one side to the other, those closing overs turned out to be the difference between a defendable total and yet another heartbreak.

Washington Freedom eyeing Smith for brief appearance between Tests

Steven Smith is in line for a brief appearance for Washington Freedom at MLC 2025 between the World Test Championship (WTC) final against South Africa and Australia’s tour of the West Indies. While Freedom said on Tuesday that Smith “will feature” in two matches, ESPNcricinfo understands that the final details of the arrangement are still being worked through with Cricket Australia (CA).If, as expected, Smith gets the sign-off, he could feature in matches on June 17 against LA Knight Riders in Oakland – just two days after the WTC final – and June 21 against MI New York in Dallas. Australia’s first Test against West Indies starts on June 25 in Barbados. However, the June 17 appearance could be impacted should the reserve day for the WTC final on June 16 be activated in the event of rain.Related

“It’s great to have Steve Smith again with us this season albeit only for probably two matches,” Freedom general manager Michael Klinger told the team’s website. “That continuity is really important for us. He was a fantastic leader for us last year, a big reason why we won. Hopefully he will be part of the Washington Freedom setup for many years to come.”Smith captained Freedom to the title in the 2024 season where he made 336 runs at 56.00 in nine innings at a strike rate of 148.67.Pat Cummins, who signed a long-term deal with San Francisco Unicorns last year, won’t feature in the 2025 edition while Travis Head, another Freedom player, had previously announced he wouldn’t return to MLC. Josh Inglis is another member of the Test squad who played last season.Meanwhile, Freedom have signed emerging T20 star Mitchell Owen as he continues to find franchise deals around the world following his breakout BBL campaign with Hobart Hurricanes.”He can play in pressure situations, making an unbelievable hundred in the BBL final,” Klinger said of Owen. “He provides a style of batting that is quite similar to Travis Head, a right-handed version. We felt he’s a real good replacement. He’s at the start of a career that’s about to flourish.”He could potentially be a long-term player for Washington Freedom. Someone we look to have a great relationship with going forward.”Owen is currently with Punjab Kings at IPL 2025 having previously featured in PSL 2025 for Peshawar Zalmi and the SA20.Freedom have also secured left-arm quick Jason Behrendorff to help fill the gap created by Marco Jansen’s absence.

INEOS hold key advantage: Man Utd now battling to sign teenage sensation

Whilst Benjamin Sesko continues to steal the headlines, Manchester United have now reportedly joined the race alongside Tottenham Hotspur to sign a teenage sensation.

Newcastle take advantage in Sesko race

Although initial reports indicated that Sesko is likely to favour a move to Manchester United this summer, it is now Newcastle United in the driving seat heading towards the forward’s signature. According to reports, the Magpies have taken pole position and have submitted a bid worth £70m to match RB Leipzig’s price tag.

As Sky Sports’ Keith Downie reported, however, there is still a chance for Manchester United if they decide to match or better Newcastle’s offer. Sesko is still open to both projects and, as ever this summer, there’s still every opportunity for a transfer hijack to take place.

Ruben Amorim would certainly welcome the chance to complete his revamped frontline too. So far, both Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha have arrived to kick things off, but it’s clear that the addition of a star striker would truly round things off.

Of course, what may not help their pursuit of Sesko or an alternative option is the fact that Rasmus Hojlund is keen to stay and fight for his place rather than leave to fund his replacement.

Rasmus Hojlund

He told reporters after scoring in Man United’s 4-1 victory over Bournemouth in pre-season: “The most important [thing] for me is to keep working hard and stay focused and then we’ll see what happens. My plan is very clear and that is for me to stay and fight for my spot.”

Man Utd now chasing teenage sensation

Whilst it won’t steal the same headlines as Sesko, those at Old Trafford are still chasing one particular incoming. According to Expressen, as relayed by Sport Witness, Manchester United are now racing Tottenham Hotspur to sign Kevin Filling from AIK Fotboll.

The 16-year-old talent has impressed the Premier League duo, who are now looking to secure his signature despite the fact that they will be unable to welcome the forward on an official basis until 2028 when he turns 18.

Unlike in the Sesko saga, however, Manchester United could hold a key advantage thanks to INEOS. The United owners also hold a majority stake in FC Lausanne-Sport and they want to sign Filling then send him on loan to the Swedish club.

Most important deal since Bruno: Man Utd make enquiry for "world-class" gem

Manchester United are set to make another key move within this summer’s transfer window.

1 ByEthan Lamb Aug 2, 2025

In one swift move, INEOS could land a deal that benefits two of their clubs, with those at Old Trafford eventually reaping the rewards by welcoming a player who’s full of potential.

Filling is also a player who has already made his mark on senior football. The teenage gem enjoyed a dream debut for AIK in the Allsvenskan league, scoring in his first game to once again showcase his talent to the likes of Manchester United and Spurs.

Here's a detailed look at Leeds' 10 most expensive signings: 10 Diego Llorente £18m from Real Sociedad

Leeds defender Diego Llorente.

Centre-back Diego Llorente was brought in ahead of Leeds’ return to the Premier League, with the Spaniard providing an experienced option in defence.

However, things never really went to plan for Llorente at Elland Road, who struggled to nail down a place under Marcelo Bielsa or Jesse Marsch.

9 Noah Okafor £18m from AC Milan

Switzerland international Noah Okafor was Leeds’ marquee signing in 2025 following the Whites’ second return to the Premier League.

The versatile forward impressed in a pre-season friendly against Leeds in Dublun, and weeks later, was unveiled as an £18m signing.

8 Rio Ferdinand £18m from West Ham

The oldest signing in the top 10 is defender Rio Ferdinand, who Leeds signed from West Ham in 2000.

The centre-back went on to impress in Yorkshire, playing in the Champions League and starring for England in the 2002 World Cup as a Whites player before joining rivals Manchester United in a big-money exit.

7 Jean-Kevin Augustin £18.4m from RB Leipzig

There were high hopes when Jean-Kevin Augustin signed for Leeds on loan when they were in the Championship, with an obligation to make a move permanent should they win promotion.

The Whites did go up, but Augustin didn’t live up to the hype, playing just 48 minutes for Leeds, who were involved in a long legal battle over making his deal permanent.

In the end, Leeds were ordered to pay an £18.4m fee to RB Leipzig and compensation to the player, making him the most expensive player per appearance in football history.

6 Tyler Adams £20m from RB Leipzig

Leeds United midfielder Tyler Adams.

Tyler Adams was signed in the summer of 2022 ahead of Marsch’s first full season in charge at Elland Road, with the central midfielder showing early promise for the Whites.

However, after Leeds were eventually relegated, he signed for Bournemouth to make a swift return to the Premier League.

5 Luis Sinisterra £21m from Feyenoord

Leeds United forwardLuis Sinisterra.

Winger Luis Sinisterra had an injury-hit spell with Leeds after signing from Feyenoord in 2022, but did show his quality when fully fit.

The Colombian was part of the squad that was relegated from the Premier League before forcing an Elland Road exit in 2023, eventually making his loan move to Bournemouth permanent in February 2024.

4 Dan James £25m from Man Utd

Signed from Old Trafford in 2021, Dan James was a long-term target for Bielsa, who nearly joined Leeds from Swansea City years prior before a dramatic deadline-day collapse.

The Whites eventually got their man, though, with James now making more appearances for Leeds than any other of his previous clubs.

3 Rodrigo £26m from Valencia

Former Leeds forward Rodrigo.

Bielsa’s most expensive signing as Leeds manager was Spanish forward Rodrigo, who spent three years at Elland Road, scoring 28 goals in 97 appearances.

Rodrigo was mainly deployed just behind the striker, something which arguably didn’t play to his strengths, with his best season in front of goal for Leeds coming in the year the Whites were relegated.

2 Brenden Aaronson £28.5m from RB Salzburg

Attacking midfielder Brenden Aaronson was on the Leeds radar for a good six months prior to signing in 2022, quickly joining after the club ensured their Premier League status.

During his first year as a Whites player, the USA international struggled as Leeds were relegated, and he remains under contract until 2027.

1 Georginio Rutter £35.5m from Hoffenheim

Top of the charts is Georginio Rutter, who has now won the Elland Road faithful over after an underwhelming start to life in West Yorkshire.

The French forward made his mark in the Championship during the 2023/24 season but left for Brighton after the Seagulls trggered his release clause hours before it was due to expire.

Deal could happen next month: Spurs eyeing move for Brennan Johnson 2.0

da fazobetai: The summer transfer window is just around the corner, and it's set to be a busy one for Tottenham Hotspur as they look to build on Ange Postecoglou's positive first season.

da betcris: Last year's window was dominated by the saga surrounding Harry Kane, and while that was far from pleasing for the Spurs faithful, they were able to get several talents through the door themselves.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou

The likes of James Maddison, Guglielmo Vicario and Brennan Johnson made a tangible impact on the team this season, and based on recent reports, Daniel Levy and Co could be about to repeat the trick that landed them the Welshman.

Tottenham Hotspur transfer news

According to a recent report from Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in Nottingham Forest's Callum Hudson-Odoi and could make an offer 'before 30 June.'

The report claims that the Lilywhites view the former Chelsea ace as someone possessing "huge" amounts of potential and that, due to the Tricky Trees' perilous financial situation, someone who could be signed this summer for a relatively modest fee.

Reports from earlier this month have claimed that the Englishman could be sold for around £30m, and while that's certainly not cheap, it isn't unreasonable for a player who reached double figures for goal involvements in all competitions this season.

Nottingham Forest player Callum Hudson-Odoi

It might not be a deal that goes down well with the fans to begin with, but the last time Levy and Co signed a player from Forest, it turned out reasonably well.

Spurs could repeat their Johnson trick

The last player that the Lilywhites signed from Forest was Johnson, who joined the club last summer for a fee of around £47.5m, and while some cast doubt at the time, it would be fair to say the Welshman enjoyed a good first season in N17.

Brennan Johnson for Tottenham

In his 35 first-team appearances, the 23-year-old winger scored five goals and provided ten assists, meaning he averaged a goal involvement every 2.3 games, which is pretty good going for a young player in a new team.

Moreover, as the Nottingham-born attacker only played 2504 minutes of action, he averaged a goal involvement every 166.9 minutes or every 1.85 90s.

In comparison, while Hudson-Odoi wasn't quite as productive, his return of eight goals and two assists in 34 games is still seriously impressive considering he's playing for a team that will generally be the underdog in most Premier League match-ups, and when broken down by minutes, the Englishman averaged a goal involvement every 218.9 minutes, or every 2.4 90s.

It's also worth remembering that this season was his first one without significant injuries disrupting his development, and lo and behold, he delivered, suggesting that the Lilywhites' assessment of his potential may well be accurate, provided he remains fit.

Lastly, while the "amazingly talented" Wandworth-born gem, as described by talent scout Jacek Kulig, hasn't had the best of times in recent years, he's still the player Bayern Munich were prepared to pay £70m to sign in 2020, so if Postecoglou can manage his injury problems properly, there is no reason why he couldn't coax him into the player so many used to think he'd become.

Ultimately, signing Hudson-Odoi is a gamble, but based on his performances this season, the reasonable fee and the sky-high potential so many used to believe he had, it's one worth taking, and the last player to make a move from the City Ground has worked out rather well.

Spurs keen on signing "special" £41m upgrade on Bentancur

The impressive talent could make the Lilywhites’ midfield far more dangerous next season.

Babar Azam: 'I count myself very lucky' to lead Pakistan at home

He will captain Pakistan in ODIs for the first time during the home series against Zimbabwe

Danyal Rasool12-Oct-2020

Babar Azam swings away a pull•Getty Images

Babar Azam has experienced plenty in what is still a fledgeling career, but there’s a milestone he is eagerly waiting for when Zimbabwe visit Pakistan later this month for a limited-overs tour. Despite being appointed captain of the limited-overs sides over a year ago, Azam is yet to lead his Pakistan in ODIs.Plenty has changed since Sarfaraz Ahmed captained Pakistan to a 2-0 ODI series win over Sri Lanka in Karachi in October last year. Ahmed himself is no longer the Pakistan captain and no longer a first-choice member of the playing XI in any format. Pakistan have notched up home Test wins against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, lost the No. 1 spot in the T20I rankings and completed a three-Test and three-T20I tour of England. A pandemic has meant all international plans have been thrown into disarray, and the ICC World Cricket Super League has begun, with Pakistan’s series against Zimbabwe being the home side’s first involvement in the qualification league for the next ODI World Cup.But in all this time, Pakistan are yet to play a single ODI match, the Zimbabwe series Azam’s first leadership stint in the 50-over format.”It’s a great honour for me to be able to captain Pakistan in ODI cricket,” Azam told the PCB’s in-house media channel. “There’s been no cricket in Pakistan for a decade, and our players were forced to play abroad. So I count myself very lucky.”The ICC league gives every series context, with seven qualifying berths up for grabs. So we want to put as many points on the board as possible so when we get to the World Cup, people talk about us seriously. In 2011, we qualified for the semi-finals and in 2019, we couldn’t get through. I don’t think the rankings matter but I want us to start well and I fully trust my team to perform well and qualify.”The ODIs will be played at Rawalpindi Stadium, the first time limited-overs cricket will take place outside the PCB’s established centres, Lahore and Karachi since before the Sri Lankan team terror attack in 2009. The main attraction behind the idea of playing limited-overs cricket at smaller venues across Pakistan was to pack in full houses whose support, meaning home support would be keenly felt out in the middle. The ODIs might have returned to Pindi Stadium, but instead of packed crowds, there will be empty stadiums as a precautionary measure against the Covid-19 pandemic. Azam acknowledged this wouldn’t be ideal and the side will miss the crowd support.”The crowd has always supported us, and we got so much love from them when cricket recently began to come back to Pakistan. Unfortunately, Covid-19 means the crowd isn’t allowed. We’ll definitely miss them because you always get a boost from the crowd. We got a lot of support during the National T20 Cup, and we hope to get the same during the Zimbabwe series.”

Landon Donovan joins NWSL's San Diego Wave as interim head coach

Donovan, one of the best USMNT players of all-time, joins the NWSL club as coach.

Donovan set to coach Wave for rest of the season.Donovan has previous soccer ties in SD.Wave currently out of playoff picture.WHAT HAPPENED?

The San Diego Wave have turned to American soccer icon Landon Donovan in hopes of turning their season around.

The Wave are mired in a disappointing campaign after winning the NWSL Shield just a season ago. The club currently sits 10th in the league with just 15 points in 16 matches. Donovan, who has roots in San Diego, will be counted on to right the ship.

AdvertisementWHAT THE WAVE SAID

“We are thrilled to have Landon join the club and lead the team for the remainder of the season, including the first-ever Concacaf W Champions Cup," said San Diego Wave FC Sporting Director and General Manager Camille Ashton. "Landon’s level of knowledge, understanding, and experience as both a player and a coach, provides us with a leader that can help guide this club to where we want to be – in a playoff position and competing for a Championship."

"His passion for this city and growing the game, along with having a player-first mentality, make him a natural fit for this club.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

This isn't Donovan's first foray into the club soccer scene in San Diego.

Donovan was the co-founder of the San Diego Loyal in the USL. He served as the Executive Vice President of Soccer Operations for the club, after spending three years as their inaugural head coach. During his four-year stint, he guided the team to consecutive playoff appearances in 2021, 2022, and 2023.

The club ultimately folded after the 2023 season, primarily due to challenges in securing a permanent stadium and facilities, combined with MLS's decision to expand into the city.

Now with the Wave, Donovan faces a challenging situation but has a team with some talented stars on its roster. American gold medal-winners Naomi Girma, arguably the best defender in women's soccer and Jaedyn Shaw, the brightest young star in USWNT pool, are both focal points on the team.

Donovan is the only U.S. male soccer player to reach 50 goals and assists while on the national team.

WHAT NEXT FOR THE WAVE?

Donovan will likely kick off his tenure as coach in San Diego's Concacaf W Champions Cup opener on Aug. 20 against Santa Fe FC in Panama City, Panama. Then the club will return to NWSL action against rivals Angel City FC on Aug. 24
