Agarkar: If fit, Rohit should have come in at No. 3

Mumbai Indians were knocked out of the IPL on a dry pitch that turned legspinners Amit Mishra and Sandeep Lamichhane into absolute terrors. That meant Rajasthan Royals were favourites to make the playoffs, unless Kings XI Punjab beat Chennai Super Kings by at least 53 runs in the last league game of the season. Now that the details are out of the way, time to enjoy some drama. It was a difficult situation for Rohit Sharma and his men. Mumbai were asked to chase in conditions that became progressively difficult for batting. Then they gave up a total of 174 though Daredevils had struggled early in their innings. Later, they were tottering at 122 for 7. So Ben Cutting began hitting boundaries.Mumbai needed 38 off 18 balls when Cutting smashed Liam Plunkett for 4, 6 and 4. They needed 18 off six when he launched Harshal Patel into the crowd behind short fine leg. He was playing an innings to rival his blitz that won Sunrisers Hyderabad the title in 2016. He saw a short and wide offcutter. He knew it needed to go. He swung his big shoulders. He launched it in the air. The trajectory seemed to suggest it would soar over deep midwicket. It didn’t.And Daredevils, a team that finished last, that spent the evening veering from one extreme to the other, savoured pure joy. There was a limp show from the Delhi Daredevils top order and a breathtaking half-century from Rishabh Pant. There were three drops, and an overthrow for five runs, but Glenn Maxwell masterminded two ridiculous catches on the long-on boundary to dismiss Rohit and Kieron Pollard. Plunkett’s over – the 18th – cost a debilitating 15 runs. Boult followed up by giving away only 5 in the 19th. Harshal seemed to lose the game one ball, and off the next, had it wrapped up.Anybody else experiencing whiplash?Rishabh Pant completes a stumping of Evin Lewis•BCCI

Delhi’s Maxwell move
Some teams might drop a player whose most recent scores are 5, 9, 2, 5, 6. Daredevils, however, made Maxwell open the batting. Now as ridiculous as that might sound, it made sense here.On a slow deck, the new ball presented the best opportunity to score. And Maxwell has the potential to break a rut with one shot. But he fell for 22 off 18 and finished with an average of 14 from 12 innings. To put that in context, among those who have batted at Nos. 1 to 6 a minimum of 10 times in a season, only seven others have fared worse.Things weren’t going to plan at the other end either. The first delivery of the fourth over was steered to point and Prithvi Shaw thought there was a single, even though the ball was headed straight to the fielder. He saw Hardik Pandya grab it, set up for the throw, release it targeting his end and yet made no attempt to get back to his crease. He was run out for 12.Pant’s party
He looks like he shouldn’t be scoring any runs, losing balance with every other big shot he plays. He literally fell on his backside attempting one tonight. But in between those awkward moments, there was unbelievable brilliance.Pant galloped to 24 off 11 on a pitch that wasn’t suiting strokeplay. He was hitting one-handed sixes. He was reverse-scooping fast bowlers for four. If only he could have convinced the umpires that he should bat at both ends. The 20-year old did the next best thing, though. After a fast start, he slowed down to make sure he could bat through the innings. It was terrific game awareness in tough conditions.Pant was dismissed in the 17th over, for 64 off 44 deliveries, having become the top-scorer this season with a tally of 684. A break-up of his runs makes even better reading: 114 off 73 in the Powerplay (strike-rate 156), 403 off 253 (strike-rate 159) in the middle overs, and 167 off 68 (strike-rate 245) in the death.Trent Boult and Glenn Maxwell formed quite the partnership on the field•BCCI

Maxwell’s redemption
Pollard had already been dropped twice – on 0 by Shaw and 3 by Abhishek Sharma – when he muscled the ball to long-on. And it was heading over the ropes. Maxwell raced to his right and leapt, knowing his momentum would take him out of bounds. He took the catch with both hands, and while still in the air outside the boundary, he lobbed it over to Trent Boult who was coming in from long off.Four overs later, Rohit – his left shoulder badly injured in the field – tried to clear the ground. He was deceived by a slower ball from Harshal Patel but it still had enough timing to go for six. But Maxwell was there once again. And so was Boult to back him up. The Australian took the catch to dismiss Cutting as well. Each of them were match-winning moments.Mishra steals the show
Evin Lewis was belting the Daredevils fast bowlers to all parts. He had been dropped on 8 and added another 40 runs when he ran past a googly from Mishra. It was exquisite cricket. The legspinner had been hit for six the previous ball but he trusted his strength – bowling slow and extracting turn from a helpful pitch – and sent back Mumbai’s top-scorer. Mishra also took out their last remaining hope with an equally artful legbreak. He was in his last over, bowling at Hardik, who bulldozes spin bowling. Still, Mishra kept tossing it up. He helped himself by bowling it wide of off stump. The batsman swung across the line and was caught at point. And his team was on their way out.

Kapp, Khaka hand Bangladesh another whitewash

South Africa continued their 16-day domination at home by whitewashing Bangladesh 3-0 with a 23-run win in a rain-curtailed T20I in Bloemfontein. After the match was reduced to nine overs a side (three overs of Powerplay), South Africa defended their total of 64 with key contributions from fast bowlers Marizanne Kapp (2 for 8) and Ayabonga Khaka (3-10).Put in to bat, Tazmin Brits, South Africa’s new 27-year-old opener, top-scored with a 22-ball 29. Only one other player – Dane van Niekerk – scored in double digits as Brits took them to the eighth over, in which South Africa lost two wickets. Captain and offspinner Salma Khatun picked up 2 for 18 from her two overs. In the chase, Bangladesh were strangled from the start. Shabnim Ismail began proceedings with a maiden, which was followed by Kapp and Khaka striking in consecutive overs. Khaka struck again, twice actually, in three balls in the sixth over, and reduced the visitors to 26 for 4. The result was a formality thereafter. Only opener Shamima Sultana (12) and No. 6 Fahima Khatun (10) faced more than 10 balls each.South Africa had also beaten Bangladesh 5-0 in the ODI series.

It appears the 39-year-old missed the bout as he had an Al-Nassr training session on Saturday morning ahead of a vital AFC Champions League clash against Al Ain on Monday night. With the fight not taking place until 3.30am on Saturday, it seems Ronaldo prioritised rest over the spectacle – something the Saudi Pro League side emphasised when they posted training pictures on social media, and captioned it "No days off".

Matt Taylor led the way with four wickets as Gloucestershire recorded their second Specsavers County Championship win of the season with a 41-run success against Durham at Cheltenham

Somerset silence stubborn Worcestershire

ScorecardMatt Taylor led the way with four wickets as Gloucestershire recorded their second Specsavers County Championship win of the season with a 41-run success against Durham at Cheltenham. The left-arm seamer finished with 4 for 31 from 16 overs to help bowl out the visitors for 298, chasing a victory target of 340.Cameron Steel and Tom Latham gave Durham a promising start, but they wilted against Taylor, Craig Miles and Ryan Higgins on another sweltering afternoon and Mark Wood’s unbeaten 61 proved in vain.Gloucestershire took 23 points from their first Championship win since the opening round of fixtures, while their opponents had to be content with five after four days of tough and competitive cricket.Durham began the day on 35 without loss and enjoyed the better of the morning session. Latham and Steel took their opening stand to 94 against some accurate Gloucestershire bowling before Latham fenced at a ball from Matt Taylor and edged through to Gareth Roderick.Steel was unbeaten on 57 at lunch, with the total 121 for 1, but he when he perished in the second over after the interval, lbw to Miles falling across his stumps, it signalled a transformation in fortunes. Taylor and Higgins settled in to bowl probing spells from the Chapel End and College Lawn End respectively, tying the batsmen down and making vital breakthroughs.Higgins removed Graham Clark and Will Smith during a six-over spell that brought him 2 for 23, Clark falling to a fine full-length diving catch by Roderick and Smith pinned lbw.Taylor was equally impressive and claimed the key wicket of Ben Stokes, who had begun positively, but moved to only 9 before being bowled on the back foot. The same fate befell Stuart Poynter, on 8, and at 201 for 6, Durham still required a further 139.They were given renewed hope by Wood and Michael Richardson, who took the score to 226 for 6 at tea and continued to bat solidly in the final session. Wood was dropped on 18 by Miles Hammond at cover off Kieran Noema-Barnett and responded by hitting four fours in an over from Miles just before the second new ball.Richardson had helped add 59 when falling lbw for 26 looking to work Miles through the leg side. Soon it was 267 for 8 as Matt Salisbury was bowled on the back-foot by Miles for a single.Gloucestershire had their tails up, but while Wood was there Durham had a chance. He began to run out of partners when George Harding chipped a tame catch to midwicket off Taylor and departed for 7.Wood, who was able to bowl only six overs in the match because of a sore heel, moved to a defiant fifty off 74 balls, with nine fours. But when Chris Rushworth was caught behind to give Higgins his third wicket, Gloucestershire had won with 11 overs left in the day’s play.

The Red Dragonsfinally got over the line and lifted the National League title in exceptional style following a record-breaking campaign in 2022-23 to seal promotion into the Football League for the first time since 2008. The fans invaded the pitch and the celebrations soon spilled over to the streets of Wrexham. McElhenney and Reynolds cried tears of joy as the Hollywood superstars were moved by the emotional scenes following the 3-1 win over Boreham Wood and Lee revealed how the co-owners and manager Phil Parkinson had always demanded to put the community first while on the pitch.

Speaking on the Men in Blazers podcast, Lee said: "I get goosebumps because we knew how much it meant to people. Yes, Ryan [Reynolds] and Rob [McElhenney] have been incredible and everyone knows how good they have been but it's also for the community and that is ingrained in us by the gaffer [Phil Parkinson] and Rob and Ryan as well. These people have been here before and they have been through so many bad times with the club and they still all come in their numbers.

"I remember on the bus parade seeing genuine tears of happiness and joy; we got to do that for people. That is a feeling I will take to the grave with me because that's something I am so proud of. It goes deeper than football, it's people's lives. This club is people's lives and I don't ever take that for granted when I go out on the pitch."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Lee revealed that Parkinson enticed him to sign for the club by assuring him that he would be "loved forever" by the passionate Wrexham fans if he helped them realise their dream of getting promoted.

"I remember when the manager called me the summer before I joined he said, 'Whoever takes this club out of the National League, you will be loved forever'," he said.

"I remember I felt that love straight after the final whistle [against Borehamwood], I was like, 'Wow, this is incredible'. We've brought joy to so many people. They pay their hard-earned money to come and watch us. After the ownership and everything that has gone on, just to bring better days back… the feeling at that Borehamwood game was incredible."

West Ham: Moyes could unleash dream JWP partner in £125k-p/w ‘machine’

West Ham United turn their attention away from the Premier League tonight as they host Serbian side FK TSC Backa Topola at the London Stadium in the Europa League.

What's the latest West Ham team news?

Speaking in his pre-match press conference on Wednesday, manager David Moyes confirmed that there are no fresh injury issues for the Hammers to contend with ahead of this match.

However, defensive midfielder Edson Alvarez is suspended and unavailable for selection after he was sent off against Union Berlin for Ajax in the competition last season.

West Ham are coming into the game off the back of a 3-1 defeat to Manchester City in the Premier League last weekend and the Scottish head coach may look to rotate his squad to offer players an opportunity to impress. One of those may well be Danny Ings.

Will Danny Ings start against Backa Topola?

One player who should be unleashed from the start of this clash is English centre-forward Ings, in order to provide him with a chance to play ahead of Michail Antonio.

The former Southampton star has made four appearances as a substitute in the league so far this season and this Europa League game is the perfect time to bring him in for his first start.

He could strike up an excellent relationship with James Ward-Prowse at the top end of the pitch as their pair already have plenty of experience alongside each other from their time on the south coast.

West Ham striker Danny Ings.

Ings and his compatriot played 88 matches together with the Saints and assisted each other for five goals combined between them in that time.

The 31-year-old marksman has only scored three goals in 26 matches for West Ham in all competitions since his move to the club in January but his form for Southampton in the past suggests that the potential is there for him to be a lethal scorer.

He was once lauded as a "goal machine" by journalist Joe Prince-Wright and the £125k-per-week ace lived up to that tag during his time at St. Mary's as the number nine racked up 46 goals in 100 matches.

Ings plundered an outstanding 34 Premier League goals across the 2019/20 and 2020/21 campaigns for the Saints and Ward-Prowse could help him to rediscover his touch in front of goal.

How many chances has Ward-Prowse created this season?

The England international has enjoyed a terrific start to his Hammers career and has created five chances in four Premier League games so far this season.

Ward-Prowse has provided his teammates with two 'big chances' and assisted three goals – two more than any other player – in that time to go along with his two strikes against Manchester City and Brighton.

West Ham midfielder James Ward-Prowse.

The central midfielder arrived at the London Stadium after he created nine 'big chances' and made 76 key passes across 38 top-flight matches for Southampton last term, which shows that he is capable of splitting open the opposition's defence on a regular basis.

Therefore, Ward-Prowse could be pivotal to ensuring that Ings is able to get back to his best and that is why the pair should both start tonight in this Europa League clash.

The English maestro could provide the former Aston Villa marksman with the service that he needs to get back on the scoresheet and Moyes should unleash them both.

Leeds could now rip up senior player’s contract, Farke doesn’t want him

Leeds United could be ready to part ways with one of their experienced heads at Elland Road and journalist Phil Hay has given some important insight into the latest news regarding his future.

What's the latest news involving Leeds United?

In an interview with German outlet BILD, Eintracht Frankfurt sporting director Markus Krösche has praised the impact of on-loan Leeds United man Robin Koch at the Bundesliga outfit. Factoring in the fact Eintracht Frankfurt have conceded just three goals so far this campaign, Krösche has complemented the partnership of Koch and teammate Willian Pacho, stating: "We are doing very well defensively. It’s unbelievable how stable Pacho is and how Robin has fit in."

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, journalist Ben Jacobs believes that securing promotion to the Premier League may be a key element in whether Italy international Wilfried Gnonto decides to stay at Elland Road for the foreseeable future.

Jacobs said: "It will all simply depend on whether Leeds go up or stay in the Championship. If they stay in the Championship, I think they’ll let Gnonto leave. But if they go back up into the Premier League, he may not want to leave."

Of course, Gnonto is currently out with a ligament injury and will also require surgery, leaving him out of contention until after the next international break has concluded, cited by Leeds Live. Next up for Leeds United is a trip to Southampton this weekend as they look to continue their unbeaten streak in the Sky Bet Championship, which currently stands at six games without a defeat.

As per reports, Crystal Palace have scouted Leeds United youngster Archie Gray; however, any January approach from the South London-based outfit is deemed to be unlikely.

Who could leave Leeds United?

Speaking on the Square Ball podcast, The Athletic journalist Hay has given an update on the future of out-of-favour Leeds United man Helder Costa: "We’ll see what happens – the expectation was that he would go. As Farke said himself, Costa had said that he wanted to leave, hence why he wasn’t involved at all over the summer and there is simply no way he can be reintegrated now. He hasn’t trained through pre-season; he isn’t familiar with what Farke’s doing.

"He's been training on his own. There was obviously the Turkish window as well, which would’ve been an option. I think we all expected that he’s probably would go back to Saudi but noting has developed there. One of a handful of things is going to have to happen. Either they terminate his contract, or when they get round to January they find somewhere for him to go for six months so that he can burn down what’s left on his deal then move on, or he just sits tight until the end of the season and moves on as a free agent."

Costa has made 71 appearances for Leeds United in total over the course of his time at Elland Road, registering eight goals and 11 assists, as per Transfermarkt.

Nevertheless, all signs point to Farke no longer wanting the Angola international around and this could prompt Leeds United owners the 49ers to pay off the 40 weeks remaining on his £32,500 per week contract, which would equate to roughly £1.3 million.

Man United: Ten Hag must drop his £120k-p/w dud who gets "bullied"

Manchester United will be bidding to boost their hopes of Champions League progression with a positive result at home to Turkish giants, Galatasary this evening, with the Red Devils having lost their opening match in the competition away to Bayern Munich.

That 4-3 loss to the Bundesliga outfit came amid what has been a dire start to the new campaign for Erik ten Hag and his men, having also now lost four of their opening seven Premier League games, following the defeat to Crystal Palace at the weekend.

A major issue for the former Ajax boss of late has been the growing list of injury absentees, with the Dutchman set to be without a number of first-team figures yet again tonight.

What's the Man United team news vs Galatasaray?

As Ten Hag revealed himself on Monday, the Old Trafford outfit are still set to be without summer signing, Sergio Reguilon for the visit of the Super Lig side, ensuring that the hosts will be forced to deploy a makeshift option at left-back in the continued absence of Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.

The Spaniard remains on the sidelines alongside the likes of Lisandro Martinez, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Amad Diallo and Kobbie Mainoo, while both Jadon Sancho and Donny van de Beek – who has not been included in the Champions League squad – are also still unavailable.

One notable change that could occur later today, however, is the return of Antony – as Ten Hag confirmed – ensuring that young Facundo Pellistri may lose his place in the side.

Will Pellistri play against Galatasaray?

Having been handed a second successive start against Palace last time out – after also starting against the Eagles in the Carabao Cup victory just days earlier – the promising Uruguayan was unable to truly make his mark in his 60-minute outing, with GOAL's Richard Martin writing that he 'couldn't make any tangible impact'.

As Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst also noted, the 21-year-old is 'still more useful as a substitute than a starter', having been unable to nail down a starting role on the right flank, despite the absence of both Antony and Sancho of late.

Man United's Facundo Pellistri

It would then be no surprise to see Pellistri return to the bench this evening – particularly with both Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount also able to slot in out wide – although the youngster may not be the only casualty of the weekend defeat.

What changes will Ten Hag make vs Galatasaray?

Despite the shortage of options in the defensive unit, one change that Ten Hag may look to make is at centre-back, with it perhaps time that Victor Lindelof makes way, in favour of former skipper, Harry Maguire.

As the aforementioned Luckhurst suggested following the loss to Roy Hodgson's men, the experienced Swede is 'still of it' and thus could let Maguire 'back into the side', having looked rather unconvincing despite the return of Raphael Varane alongside him.

Manchester United's Victor Lindelof andCasemirolook dejected after Brighton & Hove Albion's first goal

Previously described as a player who gets "bullied" by former boss Jose Mourinho, Lindelof certainly 'did not relish any of the physical duels' up against the likes of Jean-Phillipe Mateta and Jordan Ayew – as per Luckhurst – having won just three of his eight total duels on the day.

Also dubbed 'pretty shaky' by Martin, the £120k-per-week dud is failing to warrant his inclusion in the side at present, hence why turning to Maguire could be a much-needed solution, as Ten Hag's men seek to stop the rot later today.

Pulisic on scoresheet in Europa League winAmerican gets toe on Leao's late effortFans have their say in Instagram commentsGettyWHAT HAPPENED?

Pulisic got himself on the scoresheet in a chaotic Europa League encounter at San Siro on Thursday evening. Following some impressive work by Milan team-mate Rafael Leao, which saw the Portuguese glide past numerous challenges before shooting goalward, Pulisic stuck out a toe to turn home from close range. While the effort was certainly going on target it may have been blocked on the line, meaning his touch was necessary, but that didn't stop USMNT fans teasing their Hershey-born forward for "stealing" the effort.

In an Instagram post from the official USMNT page celebrating Pulisic's goal, fans couldn't hold back pointing out that he had some help in that effort.

Instagram user @kbeastiii_disc_dyes summarised it well, writing "Good goal, but ngl bro stole it from Leao". And @mohaalba11 echoed those thoughts, joking "Leao must be fuming". Some were more harsh in their assessment, such as @calebm_, who simply put "Stop stealing goals".
