Stone thrown at Australia team bus

The incident is under investigation while security has been increased on the team’s route to the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Sep-2017A broken window of the Australia team bus is “believed” to have been caused by a small rock or stone thrown at the bus when the players were returning to the hotel on Monday evening in Chittagong. No player was injured, Cricket Australia confirmed. The incident is under investigation while security has been increased on the team’s route to the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium.”On route back to the hotel last night a window on the Australian team bus was broken. No one was injured in the incident,” Cricket Australia’s security manager Sean Carroll said. “Team security personnel are currently in discussion with local authorities while they investigate the cause, which is believed to have come from a small rock or stone.”Bangladesh authorities are taking the incident seriously and security has been increased on the route.”To date we have been happy with security measures that have been in place and we are comfortable with the response from the Bangladesh authorities and the increased security presence we have been provided in light of the incident.”The BCB issued a statement after the lunch break on Tuesday to say it was treating the matter with “utmost seriousness” and a “high-power” committee had been formed by the concerned security agencies to investigate the matter. The statement also said the Australian team had expressed its “satisfaction and comfort” with the beefed up security measures after Monday’s incident.ESPNcricinfo has learned the BCB authorities believe that street children may have thrown something at the bus. Both teams reached the ground safely on Tuesday morning for the second day’s play after Bangladesh were 253 for 6 at the end of the first day.

Manchester United "Disappointed" After £257k FFP Fine

Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules are often controversial in football, given the amount of money involved in the sport these days. Clubs must ensure that they run a tight ship to avoid any potential breaches.

Of course, the biggest case we've seen regarding FFP is with Manchester City. The treble winners charged back in February, with the case currently ongoing.

Meanwhile, their neighbours, Manchester United, have had similar luck after being hit with a fine for a small breach of FFP rules in a disappointing moment for the Red Devils.

They'll certainly want to avoid any more breaches of the rule.

Why were Man United fined by FFP?

As per Simon Stone of BBC Sport, the Red Devils have been fined €300k (£257.02k) for a minor breach of FFP rules. The club is said to be disappointed, with the fine a result of changes in the way that UEFA treated losses suffered during the Covid-19 pandemic.

In full, he explained: "Man Utd fined €300,000 by UEFA for 'minor' FFP breach. Club disappointed re this. Say fine due to change in way UEFA treated COVID-19 related losses. Utd 'continue to support enforcement of rules to promote FFP + sustainability across domestic + Euro football'."

United reportedly reiterated their desire to support the enforcement of the rules to promote FFP, and sustainability across European and domestic football.

With that said, it seems as though United are keen to avoid any further breaches, given their disappointment over receiving the fine.

United's statement in full, via The Athletic, said: “While disappointed by the outcome, Manchester United accepts this fine for what UEFA acknowledges to be a minor technical breach of its previous Financial Fair Play rules.

“This reflected a change in the way that UEFA adjusted for COVID-19 losses during the 2022 reporting period, which allowed us to recognise only €15m of the €281m of revenues lost due to the pandemic within the FFP calculation.

“Post-pandemic, the clubs’ revenues have recovered strongly and are forecast to reach a record level in the current financial year. The club continues to support the enforcement of rules to promote financial fair play and sustainability across domestic and European football.”

Manchester United's losses

During the pandemic, the Manchester club suffered a net loss of £92.2m in 2021, according to the Financial Times, with revenues falling by 3% compared to the previous year.

Meanwhile, failing to bounce back in the 21/22 season, the club announced a net loss of £115.5m, but with a revenue increase of 18%.

United aren't the only club to be hit with a fine, either, with Barcelona also receiving a €500k (£428.36k) fine for wrongly reporting profits on non-player sales.

Fortunately for the Red Devils, as explained in The Athletic, the fine is related to past issues, so it will not damage their transfer budget this summer, as Erik ten Hag looks to build from the foundation set in his debut campaign last season.

Regaining a Champions League spot, United's revenue should receive a boost from featuring among Europe's elite once more, perhaps leading to far better numbers come the end of next season.

So far this summer, they've signed just one player, with that being Mason Mount. The England international arrived from Chelsea for a reported £55m.

It remains to be seen who else Ten Hag welcomes through the Old Trafford doors this summer, however.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The Chelsea forward found herself in the eye of controversy after she dragged her boot down the midfielder's shin and onto Walti's foot during their league defeat to the Gunners last weekend. Chelsea coach, Emma Hayes, immediately took her off after she was warned by the referee as it was clear that the frustration was getting the better of her with the Blues being outplayed by their opponents.

In the aftermath of the defeat, James had to face several online abuse and Hayes even claimed that the forward was "racially profiled," by both fans and "the media."

The Swiss international came out in defence of her colleague and wrote on X: "I initially didn't want to say anything, but I can't look away. I absolutely can't stand any sort of abuse – online abuse and any other sort of discrimination are disgusting. No one gets better by putting others down!!!"

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

James has been in incredible form this campaign and earned the Women's Super League (WSL) Player of the Month award for November. In the current season, she stands as the joint-second top scorer in the league, netting six goals in eight matches. With significant contributions to both Chelsea and the national team, James has become an indispensable figure. But the online abuse has impacted her and Hayes drew parallels between James' situation and David Beckham's experience in 1998 when he faced criticism for a red card against Argentina in the World Cup, for kicking Diego Simeone, which dearly cost the Three Lions.

James' mental health has suffered due to the barrage of online trolling and it remains to be seen if Hayes puts her in the starting XI Hacken in the Champions League on Thursday. A bit of rest should do her good and could return to action this weekend against Bristol City on Sunday.

Manchester United Offer 30-Year-Old In Swap For Rasmus Hojlund

Manchester United are closing in on a potential cash-only deal for Rasmus Hojlund – but reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed via Caught Offside that the Red Devils nearly sent Fred the other way in exchange.

What is the latest Manchester United transfer news?

With the Red Devils bagging themselves Champions League football for next season after a top four finish in the Premier League, they will need to ensure they are able to compete on all fronts in 2023/24. The Glazers have takent plenty of flak for their lack of ambition but they won't want to settle for mediocrity and will be eager to push on in both the top flight and in their multitude of cup competitions. That will involve the English outfit pulling off numerous transfer deals this summer, to provide the squad with both quality and depth.

It appears as though they will certainly keep busy on the transfer front this summer too. One name that won't be arriving at Old Trafford is Leon Goretzka – it looked like Bayern Munich wanted to sell him on this summer, and that had led to United keeping a close eye on how the situation unravels. The German himself though is keen to stay at the Allianz Arena and doesn't want to go anywhere – and that has now led to the Red Devils deciding against a move for him.

Higher up the pitch, the Premier League side are determined to add another attacker to their ranks. A recent report has suggested Goncalo Ramos could be one name on their radar, but one of the main talking points has been Atalanta forward Rasmus Hojlund. The 20-year-old has been on their wishlist for most of the summer and a recent report stated that a bid was being lined up, with the youngster himself eager to switch to Old Trafford.

Are Manchester United signing Rasmus Hojlund?

Now, according to reliable journalist Romano via Caught Offside, it's been revealed that the Serie A side want only cash as part of a potential deal for Hojlund this summer.

The Red Devils are preparing that opening bid it seems, but he's revealed that they originally tried to offer Fred as part of the transfer. It would have meant that United could have offloaded one of their surplus players and only need a smaller fee to get a deal done. Atalanta though have "already rejected" a swap plus cash deal and "made it clear" they are not interested in exchanging players -they want just the fee of around 65 million Euros (or £56.4m).

rasmus-hojlund-man-united-premier-league-transfers

Hojlund may only be early on in his career, but has already received plenty of plaudits for his performances so far. Football talent scout Jacek Kulig has called the striker an "absolute monster in the making" and added that 2023 is "his year".

The attacker then is clearly seen as having a bright future and someone who is already impressing, but can continue to get better. Whether United have to part with just cash or get a deal over the line with players, Hojlund looks like a really exciting capture.

Nash's plucky effort is not enough for Sussex

Sussex Sharks won their final group game in the NatWest T20 Blast when they beat Essex Eagles by 55 runs at Hove on Friday. But their convincing victory was still not enough to see them through to the quarter-finals of the competition as they were edged out of the tournament on Net Run Rate.Chris Nash’s 73 gave Sussex the edge as he batted with Luke Wright as a runner towards the end of his innings after pulling up in pain following a quick single.Chris Nash batted with a runner but his efforts were in vain•Getty Images

Essex never looked likely to get close to a target of 173 on the thrilling last night of the competition’s group stages.Unlike Sussex earlier in the evening, their Essex innings got off to an awful start. Varun Chopra was out in the first over when he hit Danny Briggs to deep midwicket. And the wickets continued to fall.Dan Lawrence was caught in the covers when he got a think edge to one from David Wiese and the bowler struck again in the same over when Ravi Bopara was well caught behind buy the diving Ben Brown to make it 33 for 3 in the fourth over.It was 45 for 4 when James Foster was caught behind and Essex were in deep trouble at 49 for 5 in the eighth over when Will Beer had Ashar Zaidi caught at deep square-leg. Everything now depended on Ryan ten Doeschate. But when he hit Beer high in the direction of cow corner Chris Jordan took an excellent running catch. After that even some late clouting from Paul Walter and Simon Harmer could not get the Eagles close. When Sussex batted Chris Nash was once again their star, with an innings of 73 off 55 deliveries. It was his sixth half-century in the competition this year as he continued to turn around his disappointing early season form. There were seven fours and two sixes in his innings which ended unluckily in the penultimate over when, playing a ramp shot off Mohammad Amir, he flicked a bail off his stumps with the stroke.Nash and Luke Wright put on 84 for the first wicket before Wright, attempting a straight six, was caught just inside the boundary by Ryan ten Doeschate for a 23-ball 37 in the ninth over. The Sussex innings stumbled as they lost three wickets while scoring 18 runs off four overs. Sussex were without skipper Ross Taylor, who had returned home to New Zealand for family reasons. But Nash finally found the support he needed in Laurie Evans, who hit an astonishing six over midwicket off Jamie Porter on his way to 47 off 34 deliveries.

Rangers: Beale Could Unlock Yilmaz With Swoop For £15k-p/w Target

It has been a summer of change for Glasgow Rangers since the end of the 2022/23 campaign as a number of players have either joined or departed Ibrox.

Ryan Kent, Alfredo Morelos, Scott Arfield, and Allan McGregor were some of the first-team stars who left upon the expiry of their contracts, whilst loanee Malik Tillman also returned to Bayern Munich.

Head coach Michael Beale has, however, been able to bring in seven signings; including Leon Balogun, Kieran Dowell, Abdallah Sima, Jack Butland, Dujon Sterling, Cyriel Dessers, and Sam Lammers.

The business is not done there, though, as The Scottish Sun recently reported that the 42-year-old tactician is hoping to make further changes to the roster, with more ins and outs on the table.

Beale must now secure a deal to sign Sunderland sensation Jack Clarke this summer, who has been linked with a switch to Glasgow.

How good is Jack Clarke?

The £15k-per-week winger's form throughout the 2022/23 Championship campaign for the Black Cats suggests that he is an excellent forward who could help the head coach to finally unlock left-back Ridvan Yilmaz.

Last summer's signing from Besiktas missed 29 competitive matches through injury last term, which meant that he was restricted to just eight Scottish Premiership starts.

Yilmaz was unable to showcase the best of his attacking talents as the 22-year-old gem registered two assists in that time.

That came after the left-footed maestro produced three goals and four assists in 23 league starts for Besiktas in the previous campaign – a contribution every 3.29 starts on average, in comparison to one every four times for Rangers.

Rangers stars Fashion Sakala and Ridvan Yilmaz.

The Turkey international has the potential to provide an excellent attacking threat from left-back as no Gers defender managed more than two league goals last season.

Clarke's arrival could play a crucial role in that as his quality at the top end of the pitch could draw attention away from Yilmaz, which would allow the full-back to bomb on down the flank to cause chaos of his own.

The Sunderland wizard made a huge impact on a consistent basis last season as the ex-Tottenham Hotspur prospect racked up nine goals and 12 assists across 46 Championship starts.

Meanwhile, no Rangers player provided more than nine league assists and Kent, who the 5 foot 11 magician could come in as a replacement for on the left wing, only found the back of the net on three occasions.

These statistics suggest that Clarke, whose dribbling ability was heralded as "effortless" by former Premier League forward Noel Whelan, could be an outstanding attacking threat for Beale out wide.

If he can translate his Championship form over to Scotland then opposition defences would have to be wary of his talents, particularly when cutting inside onto his favoured right foot – unlike with Kent as the former Liverpool whiz struggled in front of goal.

This could draw defenders in to stop him from being able to unleash a shot from a central area, which could open up the space down the left flank for him to reverse passes to Yilmaz.

The Turkish dynamo could then use the quality he showcased during his time with Bestikas to make the most of those opportunities and finally kickstart his Gers career.

Lyon are willing to sell their playmaker this winter, just 12 months after spurning interest from both Chelsea and PSG. According to , the 7-time Ligue 1 Champions have set an asking price of €20m — although they are hoping for a higher fee for a promising young talent.

Cherki was tagged as a future star as little as six months ago, and has been chased by Chelsea, PSG and West Ham at various points over the last 12 months. But he has failed to build on his potential this year, registering just one assist for a Lyon side who could face a shock relegation from Ligue 1.

WHAT FABIO GROSSO SAID

The former Lyon manager was critical of Cherki last month, seeming to rubbish the playmaker's potential in a press conference: "Is he a special player? He’s a player; he’s not a special player. He’s a player like any other, albeit with some additional qualities. But it’s not just technical qualities that matter; there are mental and athletic qualities as well. He possesses enormous technical abilities, but he needs to work on the others.”

Curran stays calm as T20 limelight beckons

For Tom Curran, the one-day series against West Indies could mark the start of something special, and potentially career-transforming

Andrew Miller14-Sep-2017The “Autumn Internationals”, a one-off T20 at Chester-le-Street, followed by five ODIs against West Indies, get underway on Saturday to herald the finale to an English season that has stretched for longer than any other in history. But for one of the youngest players on show, the coming days look set to mark the start of something special, and potentially career-transforming.At the age of 22, Tom Curran epitomises both the promise of youth and the opportunities presented by a world game in a state of exciting, if occasionally unnerving, flux. He has just two (albeit impressive) England T20 caps to his name, and yet a reputation forged in recent seasons with Surrey already precedes him. With lucrative stints at T20 franchises in South Africa and Australia already lined up for the winter, Curran knows that the coming days could help propel him ever further into the limelight.”If I’m selected, I’ll be ready to take my chance,” Curran said during a Royal London event in Notting Hill. “Representing England is a huge honour, and often players get a go in one format and, if they go well, that’s their way into other formats. So if my way into other formats is starting with T20, that’s a challenge and something I’m excited about.”There was much to admire about Curran’s initial stab at international cricket, his twin outings against South Africa in June, in which he produced exemplary spells at the top and tail of each innings. He claimed a wicket with his second ball in international cricket on debut at Cardiff, and finished off with two more in his final over of the series – the penultimate of South Africa’s hard-hitting onslaught on the short boundaries at Taunton – where a smartly disguised slower ball and a pinpoint yorker served as memorable calling-cards from a player with plenty of confidence in his abilities.”Two years ago, I set myself the target of bowling at the death for Surrey with Jade [Dernbach],” he said. “We pride ourselves on closing out innings, and I got satisfaction from defending games, winning at the end, keeping opposition batters to below-pars scores.”It’s one of the hardest things to do and arguably one of the most valuable assets to a bowler, being the best death bowler. I set that as a target for myself as a bowler – to practise yorkers, keeping working on slower balls, it makes it hard for the batter to line you up and clear the ropes at the end of an innings, and that makes a massive difference to the side.”Everything now is in favour of the batters, you have to face facts that you are going to get hit some days, but if I’m clear at the top of my mark that I’ve done my work leading up to the game and commit to my skill 100%, more often than not it will come off and I’ll be successful.”He certainly had the look, during that South Africa series, of a player who belonged at the highest level. “I was very pleased to get out there,” Curran said. “Before the first T20, I was very nervous but in the second I felt a lot more at home.Tom Curran ahead of the Royal London One-Day series against West Indies•Royal London

“It was a big step up, but it was more about the hype, the amount of messages you get, and other people saying how big it was. Once I got out there, I just got back to my skills and what I was doing for Surrey, because I’ve been very pleased with the white-ball stuff this season.”And that pleasure has been picked up by T20 scouts around the world, with Curran braced for a busy winter on the road. His first stop will be Cape Town, where he has been picked up by Knight Riders for the inaugural Global T20 League, and then it’s off to Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash, where he is set to follow in the footsteps of Stuart Broad – not for the first time in his career, he will surely hope.”It’s a very exciting winter, and obviously depending on what happens with [England’s] white-ball squads, that’ll be in the plan too,” he said. “Whether people like it or not, they’ve got to face facts. This is where a big part of the game is going.”Test cricket for the players is still the ultimate, but these tournaments, you can’t hide from them. They are taking off, they are getting massive. I’ve only played two T20s and now I could be taking off to South Africa to be one of the big T20 tournaments, and then the Big Bash which is the biggest.”It shows how quickly things can happen. It’s exciting, I can’t wait. When it comes to the IPL, I’ll cross that bridge when it comes, but the sky’s the limit. It’s exciting. It’s small steps now, but I’ll look to dominate both leagues and see what will be.”In the more immediate future, however, there’s an international series to be won and lost, one that will feature the much-anticipated return of Chris Gayle, a player with whom he has successfully crossed swords in the past, and with whom he can hope to get well acquainted this winter when they share a dressing room at Knight Riders.”I played against him a couple of years ago when he was at Somerset,” Curran recalled. “I got him out so if we can do that again, that’d be good. I had deep square out, I bowled a bumper, and luckily he top-edged it.”I’m not one to over-analyse. At the end of the day, it’s my skill against theirs, it’s irrelevant who’s batting. But as players, we’re excited to be playing and challenging ourselves against the best in the world. It’s great to see they’ve got their big guns back and it’s a challenge I can’t wait to take on.”Tom Curran was speaking on behalf of Royal London, proud sponsors of One Day cricket. Celtic: Hoops On Verge Of Deal For Maik Nawrocki

Celtic’s move for Maik Nawrocki is on the verge of being completed, according to an update from reliable reporter Mark Hendry, sharing an update on Saturday morning.

Who have Celtic signed in 2023?

The Hoops have enjoyed a fairly productive summer transfer window so far, with Norwegian prospect Odin Thiago Holm, exciting attacker Hyun-jun Yang, Aussie star Marco Tilio and midfield enforcer Tomoki Iwata all arriving through the doors at Parkhead to work under new boss Brendan Rodgers.

There is still plenty of work to be done to tailor the squad to the returning manager’s liking though, especially after Ange Postecoglou’s star man, Jota, left to join Al Ittihad in a record departure worth close to €30m (£26m).

Former Celtic winger Jota.

A centre-back looks to be next up on the agenda, with reports emerging late last week that the Bhoys board have lined up a move for Nawrocki, a promising 22 year-old Poland youth international who currently plies his trade for Ekstraklasa club Legia Warsaw.

Reports in the player’s homeland broke the news that Celtic had “entered the game” for the youngster and would compete with Turkish Super Lig club Galatasaray for his signature, and it appears the Parkhead outfit have now won the race.

Taking to Twitter from Japan on Saturday, where the Hoops were in action against Gamba Osaka, Football Scotland’s Hendry said: “Nawrocki is in the UK to do medical tests and sort out his contract details with fine tooth comb. Expect real (deal*) to be completed soon.”

Is Maik Nawrocki good?

Celtic fans can be forgiven for not knowing much about their imminent new arrival, but the 6 foot 2 ace certainly looks like a player with real potential. He's been in the Polish top flight since he was 19, starting with Warta Poznan before moving to Warsaw.

His first season in the capital didn’t exactly go to plan, as one of the country’s biggest clubs slumped to 10th in the final league standings, but he did manage 18 starts in the top flight, forcing his way in as a regular feature in the first XI.

His second campaign with the club – this season just finished – Nawrocki started 23 games in the league as they shot up to a second place finish, and he actually proved to be a consistent source of end product from set pieces too, scoring four times and providing one assist to boot, averaging a direct goal contribution one out of every five lots of 90 minutes, an impressive rate for a centre-back.

The youngster has yet to make his mark on the senior national team setup. He has been able to break into the fold for their Under-21 side though, making his debut for them in 2021 having already featured at various youth levels for the Under-15, 16, 17, 18 and 19 sides, so one would have to assume it’s only a matter of time before that progression leads him into the senior set-up.

What probably appeals most to Rodgers is the defender’s versatility, as not only is he equally comfortable on either side at centre-back, but he can also function as a full-back or even further ahead in defensive midfield, which likely reminds the boss of another towering player he had at his disposal during his last stay in Glasgow, Brentford’s Kristoffer Ajer.
