Chelsea messed up selling "superb" Sancho & Cucurella hybrid for £1.7m

Chelsea are approaching the all-important run-in, with nine Premier League games left to play for Enzo Maresca’s side, as they look to regain their top form when it matters most and secure UEFA Champions League football. This would be the Blues’ first time back in the competition after missing out the last two years.

This will also be mixed in with their UEFA Conference League run, currently in the quarter-finals of that competition, set to face Legia Warszawa in a two-legged tie on April 10th and April 17th.

18 days since their last game, Chelsea will take on Tottenham at Stamford Bridge on Thursday, starting their bid for that top four spot, as they currently sit 4th on 49 points, just one point ahead of Manchester City in 5th. But this run-in isn’t just important for the club itself, as one player in particular will be playing for his future at the club.

Jadon Sancho's last chance

Some breaking news over the international break was around Chelsea’s Jadon Sancho loan deal, a move they made in the summer to acquire the English winger from Manchester United on a loan with an obligation to buy.

However, it has been revealed this week that the 25-year-old forward could be sent back to Manchester United if Chelsea decide to pay a £5m compensation fee, in order to get out of their obligation to buy for around £25m.

Therefore, this final stretch in an attempt to qualify for Champions League football will be even more important, as Sancho’s form in that time could determine whether he is at the club next season or not. The Blues could be regretting one of their summer sales, who has played a mixture of roles on the left-hand side this season, finding some fine form over in France.

Chelsea's superb regret

Chelsea made plenty of sales in the summer, one of which saw Diego Moreira move to sister club Strasbourg, for a fee of around £1.7m, as Maresca ditched him from the squad.

The 20-year-old has made 28 appearances for the French outfit this season, scoring once, providing six assists and totaling 2,221 minutes played.

The Portuguese left-sided player has been used in a multitude of positions by manager Liam Rosenior, starting as a left-back 11 times, as a left-midfielder/left-winger 11 times, and even through the middle twice and on the right twice, showing his versatility.

When looking at Moreira’s underlying metrics, and comparing him to both Chelsea’s left-back, Marc Cucurella, and left-winger, Sancho, you can see the creativity he could offer from both areas, whilst also fitting the man-to-man pressing scheme, making tackles and interceptions, whilst also having the most ball recoveries among the trio.

Jacek Kulig has praised the amazing form of Moreira playing for Strasbourg this season, labeling the youngster as “superb”. The 20-year-old star could have been an excellent depth piece for the Blues, being able to play as an overlapping fullback in the absence of Cucurella, whilst also being a natural winger through the youth ranks, making him an option to replace Sancho on the left, who has been out of form for some time now.

On the bright side, Moreira has developed nicely being a part of this young and expansive Strasbourg project, growing as a player. Chelsea are said to have a buy-back clause which was inserted into the deal when he was sold in the summer, so one day he could return to play a role for the Blues.

As it stands, though, Maresca messed up by brutally ditching him from Stamford Bridge last year because he could have been the Italian’s own hybrid of Cucurella and Sancho’s best qualities down the left flank.

'You can't become a good spinner if you don't get over the fear of getting hit'

Kuldeep Yadav talks about his craft, the disappointment of Lord’s 2018, and taking tips from Shane Warne

Interview by Shashank Kishore01-Mar-20194:23

The hard truth is that I didn’t bowl well at Lord’s – Kuldeep Yadav

“No problem, mate. Bangalore traffic is a killer. Don’t worry, I’m waiting.” Kuldeep Yadav puts you to ease as he cools off after a two-hour gym session and a fitness assessment. As he waits, he poses for a few pictures with fans and then joins his ODI colleagues, who are sweating it out in the nets. There’s healthy banter and laughter, and the promise of “Wait till I get you out.””I haven’t held the ball for a week. My coach is waiting for me back home in Kanpur,” he says. “I’m bored now, . Bowling is an obsession for me.”Kuldeep has just won ESPNcricinfo Awards for the ODI and T20I bowling performances of 2018, and has agreed to record two small acceptance speeches. “Bowling in the hot sun is easier,” he laughs after two retakes. Then he gets on a roll, chatting about the year that went by, how he overcame the disappointment of Lord’s 2018, and his interactions with Shane Warne, among other things. What are your takeaways from the year gone by?
That it’s very difficult to switch from white-ball cricket to red-ball cricket. If you keep playing red-ball cricket, it’s easy to adjust as a spinner, but I’m regularly playing with the white ball, so when I got the chance [at Lord’s], I wasn’t prepared enough to tackle everything. For me, red-ball cricket is the biggest challenge. Everyone loves Test cricket and I’m no different.ALSO READ: ‘I really worked on my bowling after the Lord’s Test’It’s difficult when you’re playing abroad. At Lord’s, I can’t say the conditions weren’t up to the mark, but it was difficult. I wasn’t used to bowling with the Dukes ball, so when I returned, I worked really hard with my coach [Kapil Pandey]. I discussed what I’d done there, and from then, I started thinking about Test cricket. That has been the one thing in my mind since then. What have you done since then?
I had time to go back to Kanpur and work with my coach. The Rovers Club, where I have practised since childhood, gives me positive vibes. It is where I am myself, with a lot of freedom to just do my thing quietly without having so many cameras trying to pick what you are trying. It took me seven days to actually get over my Lord’s performance and bounce back. I was in England for one more game after the Lord’s Test. The team management sent me home as they felt I would get game time before the West Indies series by playing against Australia A. I made plans, which I executed in the unofficial Tests against Australia A. In the first game I went okay, I was bowling too full, but in the second game, I got a five-for. That settled me down.”Sometimes our physio and trainers fear I bowl a lot [in the nets]. Now I listen to them”•Getty ImagesWere you critical of yourself after Lord’s?
I didn’t bowl well. That’s the hard truth. I didn’t think of wickets or conditions. It was just that I didn’t bowl well.Did coming back home help you refocus?
It gave me time to discuss with my coach. He pointed out what I did right, and asked me to focus on accuracy rather than trying too many things. How did you prepare for the tour of Australia?
I first started bowling with the SG red ball, because we were playing at home against Australia A. Then I realised maybe I should bowl with the Kookaburra as well, because I thought if I perform well against West Indies, I could get a chance in Australia. I bowled for two days, 16-17 overs, with it. I found it easy to handle – you get good grip. How do you plan?
I think a lot at the ground, even when I’m not playing. Of course I watch some videos to understand a batsman’s strengths and weaknesses. But I don’t think, “If I bowl here, he will hit me there.” I don’t believe in too much video analysis because my skill sets are different. If I bowl, I see if I have executed well. I don’t think I should stress about it too much at this stage. I think about how I should get better, how to pick up wickets. Yes, I don’t watch videos, but it doesn’t mean I don’t think much about my bowling.Tell us about your interactions with Shane Warne in Australia.
I’ve followed him from childhood. My coach wanted me to watch his videos. When I met him during the Pune Test [2017] for the first time, I discussed many aspects of bowling. When we were in Australia this time, Ravi Shastri got me to chat with him. From that day, he was often by my side to help me and guide me through aspects I need to focus on bowling in Australia. Was it just a one-off meeting or did you have a series of chats?
We met every morning of the Test matches. Before the Tests, I was bowling well, so I told him I’m in good rhythm, getting turn and getting everything I wanted to get out of my bowling. He looked at my action and spoke to me about handling different situations, how to bowl when you’re under pressure. The kind of body language you should have. He told me: when you’re under pressure, remain calm and give a big smile.

What changes did he suggest?
He looked at one replay on commentary and suggested minor changes with my bowling arm. He pointed to my knees bending at the time of release, and body alignment. He felt if it is straight, I’d be able to use my core better and be able to flight the ball more.He also spoke to me about the kind of fields you need to set in Australia. The lengths you need to vary for your stock ball, googly and flipper. I was like, “Wow, this man is like an encyclopaedia.” He demonstrated by bowling left-handed. Even now, from time to time he sends me texts and I remain in touch with him with him on WhatsApp. It has been great to have his support. When you finally got a chance, in Sydney, were you nervous?
It felt like I was making my debut. I didn’t want to make the mistakes I made at Lord’s. I planned. Like, Usman Khawaja is a good player through the off side, so I planned to bowl a few wrong’uns to him.You come across as a much-more confident white-ball bowler. Why is that?
If you’re playing with the white ball regularly, it becomes easy to adjust. I’m more settled in white-ball cricket, I never feel any pressure. For any spinner, in ODIs, there’s a limited quota, so you need to attack in that way. You need to challenge yourself every time to perform for the team.ALSO READ: What makes the left-arm legspinner such a threat?Has bowling to someone like Andre Russell in the KKR nets helped you?
I haven’t bowled much to him! I don’t bowl much in the nets [during the IPL] so that I don’t give away too many clues. At the Indian nets, I do, but otherwise I prefer sticking to my drills and doing single-wicket bowling. I hardly bowl five overs and then move over to nets and just bowl at the stumps. Once I feel comfortable, I follow my drills.I bowl just about enough to make me feel comfortable. When you’re with the Indian team, you have to bowl a lot anyway, so when I have some time away from that environment, I focus on my game and my drills. Sometimes, when I lose my rhythm, I go back to these basics to become comfortable again. Sometimes our physio and trainers fear I bowl a lot. They know I will keep bowling a lot when on a break. They mean it in a good way, so now I listen to them.Tell us about your bowling partnership with Yuzvendra Chahal.
When you play together regularly, you learn from your partner. So I’ve learnt a lot from him. Whenever we play together, we try and improve together. Also in general, since my younger days, my coach made me bowl from the centre wicket, and challenged the batsmen to hit sixes, so the fear disappeared right from early stages of my career. You can’t become a good spinner if you don’t overcome that fear and just think wickets. That’s what Chahal and I have done. The middle overs are important in ODIs – if you don’t attack, teams will get 320, so the focus is on picking up wickets in the middle overs. Are you happy with where your game is at today?
I haven’t thought about that (). I’m the kind of person who underestimates himself. I feel I’m never ready. I never feel I’m 100%. The only thought process is: I should keep getting better. Sometimes it goes well, sometimes it doesn’t.My coach often asks for five wickets from each every match, but it doesn’t always happen. My mindset is, “Yes, I should do well for my team.” As an individual you tend to be satisfied sometimes, but the biggest satisfaction is if the team wins. How do you switch off?
I stay at home, go to my ground, because the vibes I get there are different. Youngsters come, those who I’ve spent time with in the age-group days come. My coach is always around, so I hang out with them. Otherwise, I’m at home with family. I’m fond of movies, I love soccer. I follow Neymar. I can’t play [football] well, but to see and watch, I’m a big fan.

Angelo Mathews stars in thriller as Sri Lanka go 1-0 up

Sri Lanka stole to their target for the second time this tour, scoring the winning runs off the last ball to deny a tenacious Zimbabwe defence of a modest target. A top-edged four off the bat of No. 9 Dushmantha Chameera and a chip into the legside outfield were the final acts of a chase in which Sri Lanka had struggled to stay afloat.Angelo Mathews, playing his first T20I in almost three years, had produced the most substantial Sri Lankan innings, making 46 off 38 to take the game deep. Dasun Shanaka was not out on 26 off 18, having also struck important boundaries.Their work overtook Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza’s outstanding all-round efforts. Raza had first made 62 off 42 with the bat, then claimed 3 for 13 with the ball – both the most runs, and best figures in the game. But just as they had been pipped at the finish in the second ODI, earlier on tour, Zimbabwe were left visibly dejected again. The final overThe experienced pair of Mathews and Shanaka had come together at the end of the 14th over, with 61 to get off 36 balls, and no recognised batters to come. As such they had batted sagely, picking off boundaries and keeping the requirement manageable, with well-calculated boundaries. When it came to the final over, bowled by Blessing Muzarabani who had been economical thus far, Sri Lanka needed 12. Mathews went deep in his crease and clattered Muzarabani down the ground for a one-bounce four first ball – the bowler punished for missing his yorker. Then, expecting Muzarabani to go short, Mathews stayed on his back foot and played a delectable late cut that bisected the keeper and short third for another four.Sri Lanka only required six off four now, but Muzarabani would bowl a dot ball, and then have Mathews hole out to deep midwicket, trying to hit the game-winning six. Some of what happened next was pure luck. Muzarabani went at Chameera’s body, and the ball took a top edge and sailed over the wicketkeeper as the batter swiped at it. Last ball, a fullish one, Chameera chipped towards deep midwicket, and the batters scampered the last two.Sikandar Raza had a great game with bat and ball•SLC

Raza rocks it with the bat…Raza arrived at the crease just after the powerplay, took a few balls to get settled, then began to open his shoulders. Three fours – all square of the wicket – off Chameera in the ninth over, was his first serious statement. He was then methodical during a 45-run third-wicket stand with Sean Williams while the spinners operated (he was just 31 off 27 balls at one stage), before adopting a more aggressive mode again once Williams departed. He slog-swept Wanindu Hasaranga over the deep midwicket boundary, smoked Nuwan Thushara down the ground to get past 50, and reaped 31 runs off the last 15 balls he faced.…and with the ballWith Richard Ngarava, Wellington Masakadza, and Blessing Muzarabani all having claimed a wicket in the powerplay, Sri Lanka were already reeling when Raza came on to bowl. He then delivered an excellent spell that decked the rest of the top order. He clipped the top of Sadeera Samarawickrama’s off stump with a sharp offbreak first ball, before in his final over, having Charith Asalanka caught off a leading edge, then sending a skidding offbreak into the stumps of Wanindu Hasaranga. He’d conceded only a single boundary in his four overs.Sri Lanka’s spinners keep a lid on Zimbabwe’s scoringThough Zimbabwe lost two powerplay wickets, the Raza-Williams partnership had delivered them to a decent position in the middle overs. Maheesh Theekshana – who had taken those powerplay wickets – conceded only 11 in his last two overs. New captain Wanindu Hasaranga took 2 for 19 himself, and finished with excellent figures of 2 for 19, bowling entirely through the middle.Sri Lanka’s excellent ground fielding also helped rein the scoring in.

Fabrizio Romano reports the 22-year-old wants to stay in England. The news will be a blow to Erik Ten Hag and his new employers Bayer Leverkusen, who had hoped to entice the winger to make the move to the Bundesliga.

Chelsea's top brass will be pleased with this latest development, as they are the most credible suitor for Garnacho's signature. Aston Villa have also been linked, while Napoli and Atletico Madrid will also be disheartened by the development.

DID YOU KNOW?

United have set the steep price tag of £70m for the young winger. Clubs will fancy their chances of driving those prices down, as Ruben Amorim has made it abundantly clear that Garnacho is not part of his plans for the 2025/26 season.

WHAT NEXT FOR GARNACHO?

Garnacho is taking some time for himself, remaining in Asia after a calamitous post-season tour on the continent with United. In one incident, the Argentinian pushed a fan, while he also put his middle finger up to the camera at another fan meet. It's clear Garnacho is done with the club, hopefully, his unprofessional outbursts on the way out of Old Trafford do not scupper his future plans.

Sold by INEOS, now outscoring Zirkzee: Man Utd must rue losing £25m "hero"

Erik ten Hag’s tenure at Manchester United came to an end in October last year. Things ultimately did not work out for the Dutchman, despite winning two trophies in his two full seasons at the club. He guided United to their lowest-ever Premier League finish, eighth, last term, although that seems like it will be beaten this time around

The former Ajax boss was certainly backed in the transfer market, too. He spent a reported £616m on new signings over the course of his time at the club, reshaping the squad. Sadly, not many of those signings have ended up working out.

However, one player Ten Hag signed – under the INEOS regime – who seems to be finding his best form in a United shirt is Joshua Zirkzee.

Zirkzee’s United career so far

It has been a mixed debut season in Red for Netherlands international Zirkzee. He made the move to Old Trafford from Bologna in the summer for £36.5m, and initially struggled to find his best form, despite showing glimpses of what he can do.

Zirkzee, Dalot, De Ligt

So far, the former Bayern Munich star has scored six times and registered two assists in 41 games in that famous Red shirt, and has been particularly excellent of late, playing as one of the two number 10s in Ruben Amorim’s system.

Goals were a bit hard to come by for the attacker at the start of his United career. However, he has been finding the back of the net more consistently of late, and scored for United away to Real Sociedad in the Europa League.

He got the Red Devils’ only goal of the game to get a crucial 1-1 draw in the Round of 16 first leg.

As United social media presence Adam McKola said on Stretford Paddock, the United number 11 is “an intelligent footballer”, and possesses excellent close control. His ability on the ball is second to none.

So, Zirkzee may turn out to be one of the success stories of Ten Hag’s and INEOS’ transfer business. However, the new regime have made a handful of poor decisions in the market too, including selling one of United’s most important players last season, who is now outscoring Zirkzee this term.

The former United player outscoring Zirkzee

One of the rare things in modern-day football is to become a one-club player. Well, before his summer move to Napoli, Scott McTominay was on his way to doing just that at Old Trafford. He cost the Naples club £21m up front, with a further £4.2m in add-ons.

Where Are They Now

McTominay departed his boyhood club after making an impressive 255 appearances, scoring 29 goals and grabbing eight assists. Once described as a “hero” by Statman Dave last season, he scored some vital goals throughout his time at Old Trafford.

Last season in the Premier League, the Scotland international scored seven times. That included two goals against Brentford and Chelsea in match-winning causes at home, to earn United some big wins.

This season, the former United number 39 is thriving under Antonio Conte at Napoli. With Gli Azzurri pushing for the Scudetto, he has seven goals and four assists in all competitions, with ten of those 11 goal involvements coming in Serie A.

McTominay has made a brilliant start to life in Italy, and is even outscoring Zirkzee, who is starting to find his best form in Red for United.

Some of his stats on FBref show just how well he has played this term. For example, the Napoli midfielder averages 0.26 goals per game, ranking him in the top 95% of midfielders in Italy’s top flight.

Looking back on it, perhaps United regret selling McTominay. As well as Zirkzee is playing now, having their former academy star’s goal threat to add to the dynamic up front could have been deadly.

Even though they sold him for just £25m including add-ons, it seems United could have got an even better deal, or just kept him at the club instead.

He's playing like a £50m star: Leeds sold Struijk successor for just £4m

da bet esporte: Looking at the promotion-chasing Leeds United side at the moment, it could be argued that the defensive unit will prove vital if the club are to return to the Premier League.

da cassino online: Of course, the only goalscorer during the Whites’ recent 1-0 triumph over Middlesbrough was 56-time Wales international Daniel James, yet the imperious centre-back duo on the night, consisting of both Joe Rodon and Ethan Ampadu, helped to keep the 22nd clean sheet of the season.

Whilst Daniel Farke will be glad a shut-out and a victory was secured at the Riverside Stadium courtesy of those named, he will be worried about the injury status of Pascal Struijk all the same, with the Leeds captain out again with another serious knock.

Struijk's importance at Leeds

After all, the 25-year-old centre-back just seems to be cursed with constant setbacks in this department.

Last season, Struijk was only fit enough for 25 clashes in all competitions owing to a recurring groin concern, with a new development now revealing that the reliable number five could miss the rest of this season with a potential foot fracture.

This would be a demoralising blow for Farke and Co, considering Struijk has popped up with five crucial goals this campaign from 35 Championship contests, including bagging a double against Sunderland in February to clinch a late win.

Moreover, the injury-prone defender has been dogged at the back away from these goalscoring heroics by collecting a hefty 14 clean sheets.

Whilst Ampadu is a sterling option in the short-term, Leeds aren’t exactly blessed with numbers in the centre-back spots with Struijk sidelined, making the decision to let this rising defensive star leave last summer for just £4m look more bemusing by the minute.

Leeds may have sold a £50m star in the making

Looking more long-term too, there had been rumours in the not-so-distant past that Struijk could leave Elland Road behind, with Serie A side Torino keen admirers.

Therefore, having more bodies at the back in the here and now would be extremely handy in preparing for this possible outcome, with Charlie Cresswell an ideal face to have around to shore up the promotion candidates even more defensively.

Charlie Cresswell for Leeds United.

The former Whites number five would never quite make the grade at a senior level for his boyhood employers, despite having an “excellent” loan spell at fellow second tier side Millwall during the 2022/23 campaign – as it was labelled by Lions boss at the time Gary Rowell – which bumped up his experience of the testing division.

Much like his 6 foot 3 counterpart, Cresswell showed on loan at the Den that he had an eye for goal with five strikes tallied up from 30 appearances, meaning he could have been the perfect long-term successor to Struijk.

But, regardless of this standout spell in the English capital, the Preston-born titan would never make it at Elland Road, unfortunately, with only 14 senior chances handed to him before a bold £4m move to French outfit Toulouse came to fruition.

This left-field switch to Ligue 1 has worked in Cresswell’s favour, however, when glancing at his impressive FBref numbers below, with direct comparisons to be made between the 22-year-old’s improving game in France and Dean Huijsen’s current breakout season at AFC Bournemouth – the Cherries star noted among the most similar defenders to the Preston native across Europe’s top five leagues.

Looking at the table above, Cresswell – who was dubbed “amazing” by Jesse Marsch in the past – isn’t a million miles off matching the £50m-rated Huijsen in various aspects of his defensive game, on top of also managing to better Strujjk in some defensive basics.

Therefore, if Leeds had just exercised more patience and didn’t offload the 22-year-old for £4m, they would already have a ready-made Struijk replacement to further boost their depth ahead of the edgy promotion run-in.

Leeds star has been one of the signings of the season & it's not Tanaka

Leeds United have conducted some phenomenal pieces of business in the transfer market over the last couple of years, aiding Daniel Farke’s attempts of taking the club back to the Premier League.

Dropping back into the Championship was a huge disappointment for the Whites, but the German has done an excellent job of building a side capable of challenging for promotion.

Manor Solomon arrived on loan from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer, with the club bagging themselves a top-flight level talent to bolster their attack in 2024/25.

The Israeli international has produced the goods consistently this campaign, notching a total of seven goals and seven assists, helping the club sit top of the table.

However, his limelight has often been stolen by another player who has thrived beyond all imagination after his summer move to Elland Road in 2024.

Ao Tanaka’s stats for Leeds United in 2024/25

Japanese international Ao Tanaka joined Leeds in a £3.5m deal from German outfit Fortuna Düsseldorf, with not many knowing what to expect, arriving as an unknown quantity.

However, when he got his chance as a regular starter, he took it with both hands, now being an integral part of Farke’s side’s success throughout this campaign.

The 26-year-old has started 30 times in the Championship this campaign, notching four goals and two assists, but it’s his underlying stats that have been even more impressive.

The central midfielder has registered a 90% pass completion rate, whilst winning 1.7 tackles per 90 and making 1.6 interceptions per game – being the perfect box-to-box option at the heart of the Whites side.

There’s no denying that he’s a strong contender for the division’s signing of the season award, but one other first-team member has greatly impressed, often being caught in Tanaka’s shadow given his form in Yorkshire.

The Leeds star who could battle Tanaka for the signing of the season

After failing to win promotion in the play-off final last season, it was pivotal Leeds came back with a vengeance to write the wrongs, but also bolstered the squad to increase their chances of promotion.

Leeds United star Archie Gray

However, the defeat saw numerous big-money talents depart the club, including academy graduate Archie Gray, who operates out-of-position for large spells, featuring on the right-hand side of the Whites’ backline.

Such a transfer may have injected huge money into the club, but saw them lose one of their key components to why they were so successful during Farke’s maiden campaign.

Despite the sale, such worries have been pushed aside, with Jayden Bogle nailing down the right-back role this season after his £5m move from Sheffield United last summer.

The 24-year-old has featured in 36 of the 38 league outings in 2024/25, having a real positive impact at both ends of the pitch, providing the quality that was needed in such an area.

He’s managed to register five goals and two assists despite his defensive position, with his latest effort coming in the 2-2 draw with QPR before the international break.

However, defensively he’s been just as impressive, winning 62% of the tackles he’s entered to date, whilst also winning a staggering 5.9 duels per 90, helping the club boast the second-best defensive record in the division.

Bogle, who’s been labelled “phenomenal” by one analyst, has come out on top in 53% of those duels, with his defensive solidity being demonstrated by being dribbled past less than once per 90 across 36 matches.

His fee, coupled with his ability to slot in and seamlessly nail down the position is what has made his time at Elland Road so impressive, certainly going under the radar.

If it wasn’t for Tanaka’s form in Yorkshire, the full-back would certainly be a huge favourite for the award, still having bags of time to improve further under Farke’s guidance.
