He left in 2021: Chelsea must rue selling amazing Nkunku upgrade for £34m

Over the years, Chelsea Football Club has been the home to countless centre-forwards who have captured the hearts of the fanbase with their impressive displays on the pitch.

Eidur Gudjohnsen featured for the Blues over a six-year period, amassing over 250 appearances, but catching the eye with his finishing ability in the final third.

The former Iceland international netted 78 times during his time at Stamford Bridge, helping the club win multiple Premier League titles along the way.

He wasn’t the only talisman to impress during his time as a player, with Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink scoring 87 times in 177 games in West London, cementing his own place in the club’s history books.

However, fast-forward to 2025, the club have lacked that focal point under Enzo Maresca, with the Italian yet to make his own stamp on the forward line since his summer appointment.

Christopher Nkunku’s stats for Chelsea in 2024/25

With Nicolas Jackson currently on the treatment table, Maresca has relied upon Frenchman Christopher Nkunku to lead the line for Chelsea over the past couple of weeks.

The 27-year-old has struggled for regular minutes after his £52m move from RB Leipzig in 2023, with an ACL injury halting his progress for the majority of last season.

Christopher Nkunku in action for Chelsea

However, he’s been handed multiple starts over the last couple of weeks, looking to fill the void left by the Senegalese international after his recent injury setback.

Nkunku has started each of the last four outings across all competitions, registering one goal and one assist, with both of his contributions coming in the recent 4-0 thrashing of Southampton.

He’s offered a temporary solution to the forward position, which the manager has desperately tried to bolster during his two transfer windows since his appointment.

However, the club may have been better off keeping hold of one player who certainly would’ve offered the focal point the Italian has craved in recent months.

The Nkunku upgrade that Chelsea sold back in 2021

Off the back of winning the Champions League back in 2020/21, Chelsea made some big-money investments, which saw numerous players depart from the Bridge.

Romelu Lukaku arrived in a £97.5m deal from Inter Milan, which resulted in Tammy Abraham leaving in a £34m deal to join Serie A side Roma, ending his long-standing affiliation with his boyhood club.

Whilst it was a superb fee to receive for an academy graduate, they parted ways with an impressive talent who has continued his goal-scoring form away from West London.

Abraham, who’s currently spending the season on loan at AC Milan, has registered 45 goals since his big-money departure, with eight of which coming during the ongoing campaign.

When comparing his underlying stats to those of Nkunku, the Englishman has outperformed the current first-team star, highlighting the mistake the Blues made in allowing him to leave the club.

Abraham, who’s previously been labelled “sensational” by commentator Matteo Bonetti, has achieved a higher shot-on-target accuracy rate this season whilst also winning more of the aerials he’s entered.

He’s also registered a higher xG to date, finding himself in better opportunities to score than the Frenchman, offering that out and out presence they’ve desired over the past couple of months.

Given his form in Italy, the club certainly may have offloaded the 27-year-old too prematurely, having the tools to offer the needed focal point Maresca craves in West London.

However, unfortunately for the Blues, he will remain a case of what could’ve been had they kept hold of him, with Abraham thriving away from his boyhood with the added minutes he’s received after departing in 2021.

WBBL previews: Thunder look to Kapp, Matthews could inspire Renegades

Defending champions Adelaide Strikers have retained their core, Melbourne Stars will have Meg Lanning and huge name will boost Perth Scorchers

Adelaide Strikers

Captain Tahlia McGrath
Coach Luke WilliamsSquad Georgia Adams (England), Jemma Barsby, Darcie Brown, Danielle Gibson (England), Katie Mack, Tahlia McGrath, Anesu Mushangwe, Courtney Neale, Annie O’Neil, Bridget Patterson, Maddie Penna, Megan Schutt, Ella Wilson, Amanda-Jade Wellington, Laura Wolvaardt (South Africa)How the draft wentAfter a first title last season, Strikers understandably emphasised retaining their core. They expectedly retained South Africa star Laura Wolvaardt who returns to Adelaide for the fourth straight season. She is likely to again bat in the top order. Strikers also drafted England allrounder Dani Gibson, who will make her WBBL debut this season after her emergence during the Ashes. The 22-year-old is an aggressive cricketer, who bowls quickly and offers firepower with the bat.How they stack upHaving agonisingly finished runners-up twice, Strikers finally went all the way last season and will start their title defence as perhaps the team to beat. The bulk of the title-winning team remains intact, but Strikers will miss West Indian Deandra Dottin who was the player of the final after a stellar performance with bat and ball. They will also be without wicketkeeper Tegan McPharlin, who has retired, with Bridget Patterson asked to take the gloves this season in what looms as something of a gamble. But it’s a squad brimming with talent across the board and Strikers especially boast a loaded attack led by spearheads Megan Schutt and Darcie Brown. Legspinner Amanda-Jade Wellington will again be the frontline spinner with English recruit Georgia Adams set to provide an offspin option and she’s also a versatile batter. Strikers should be in for another title-contending season.Player to watchIt’s hard to go past Tahlia McGrath. She’s Strikers’ inspirational captain and has blossomed into an international star, boasting the highest batting average in women’s T20I history. McGrath had entered the Australian season with extra motivation after a relatively lean Ashes campaign with the bat. McGrath, the world’s top-ranked T20I batter, rediscovered her belligerent best against West Indies with a couple of trademark whirlwind knocks to suggest the travails of the UK are in the rear-view. She’s also a quality seam bowler and her tactical nous is well regarded. It all means that McGrath will again shoulder a heavy burden for Strikers.Amelia Kerr will carry a heavy load for Brisbane Heat after a delayed arrival•Getty Images

Brisbane Heat

Captain Jess Jonassen
Coach Ashley NoffkeSquad Mignon du Preez (South Africa), Lucy Hamilton, Nicola Hancock, Sarah Glenn (England, replacement), Grace Harris, Laura Harris, Bess Heath (England), Mikayla Hinkley, Ellie Johnston, Jess Jonassen, Amelia Kerr (New Zealand), Charli Knott, Grace Parsons, Georgia Redmayne, Courtney Sippel, Georgia VollHow the draft wentHeat predictably retained New Zealand legspinner Amelia Kerr with their platinum pick and she returns for a fourth season in Brisbane. But Kerr will miss the first four games of Heat’s campaign. They also selected England batter Bess Heath, who joins Heat after previously being with Melbourne Stars. Former South Africa batter Mignon du Preez was the marquee recruit for Heat through the direct nomination route having skipped the overseas player draft. Du Preez is the second-highest run-scorer in WBBL history among overseas players with 2292 runs at 28.29 and a strike-rate of 113.80 having previously played for Hobart Hurricanes and Melbourne Stars. How they stack upAfter a heartbreaking defeat to eventual champions Adelaide Strikers in the Challenger final, Heat will be hoping their relatively youthful squad can take another step forward as they eye a first title since back-to-back triumphs in WBBL 04 and 05. England star Danni Wyatt and India allrounder Pooja Vastrakar have departed, but Heat believe they have batting depth. Du Preez and Heath should fit nicely around top-order batters Georgia Redmayne and Grace Harris, while 20-year-old Georgia Voll is tipped to have a breakout season. Their bowling attack perhaps isn’t quite as potent as some of the other leading teams though there is much anticipation over left-arm quick Lucy Hamilton, who was part of Australia’s team at the Under-19 World Cup earlier this year. England legspinner Sarah Glenn will cover the early season absence of Kerr, who is part of New Zealand’s current tour of South Africa.Player to watchFor this relatively inexperienced group, the calming influence of skipper Jess Jonassen will be vitally important for a Heat team with big ambitions. She’ll also be relied upon to be a fulcrum of the attack with her versatile left-arm spin capable of being utilised at any stage of the innings. Throw in her batting capabilities late in the innings, it’s little wonder why she’s one of the most respected players in Australian cricket.Shabnim Ismail will bring a cutting edge to Hurricanes’ attack•AFP/Getty Images

Hobart Hurricanes

Captain Elyse Villani
Coach Jude ColemanSquad Nicola Carey, Maisy Gibson, Heather Graham, Shabnim Ismail (South Africa), Ruth Johnston, Lizelle Lee, Hayley Silver-Holmes, Emma Manix-Greeves, Amy Smith, Bryony Smith (England), Rachel Trenaman, Molly Strano, Elyse VillaniHow the draft wentHurricanes were a big beneficiary of the chaos at the top of the draft. With Thunder, Renegades and Scorchers all chasing the big-name allrounders, they were able to lock in Shabnim Ismail to bolster their attack despite Ismail being a retention option for Renegades. They then looked slightly left-field taking English offspinning allrounder Bryony Smith despite her limited international experience. But she had a solid Hundred tournament and opened the batting alongside Lizelle Lee at Trent Rockets. Lee bypassed the WBBL draft to be a direct signing for Hurricanes. Lee and Smith shared three 60-plus opening stands in the Hundred this season and could be reunited at the top of the order for Hurricanes if captain Elyse Villani bats down the order, as she did in five matches last season. How they stack upDespite Hurricanes and Tasmania’s WNCL programs being closely linked together Hurricanes have not been able to match Tasmania’s recent domestic success although they did make the finals last year after a dismal run over the previous five seasons. They have a solid core of experienced players without any out-and-out superstars. Lee, Villani, Heather Graham, Nicola Carey and Smith will form the backbone of the batting. Graham and Carey bowl a lot of the key overs along with spin duo Molly Strano and Maisy Gibson. Ismail’s inclusion adds some firepower to the attack and could make them very dangerous. They have enough talent to be a threat.Player to watchShabnim Ismail could be a difference maker for Hurricanes. She is still bowling very well despite retiring from international cricket in May. She is only eight months removed from taking 2 for 26 in the T20 World Cup final at home against Australia. She didn’t bring her best for Renegades last summer but she has a history of delivering in the WBBL. She was pivotal in Sydney Thunder’s title in 2020, taking 2 for 12 including the wickets of her new Hurricanes captain Villani and Australia captain Meg Lanning to be named player of the match. If she can be a strike weapon for Hurricanes, then they loom as a tough team to beat.Meg Lanning has been in form for Victoria early season•Getty Images

Melbourne Stars

Captain Meg Lanning
Coach Jonathan BattySquad Maia Bouchier (England), Alice Capsey (England), Sophie Day, Sophia Dunkley (England), Nicole Faltum, Tess Flintoff, Kim Garth, Olivia Henry, Milly Illingworth, Meg Lanning, Rhys McKenna, Jas Nevins, Sasha Moloney, Sophie Reid, Annabel SutherlandHow the draft wentStars took a slightly different approach to the draft than other clubs in terms of their picks. They only took two players at the draft, which most clubs did, and then signed Sophia Dunkley as a direct nomination post-draft. But they opted to bring back England youngsters Alice Capsey and Maia Bouchier, who have both played for Stars previously, rather than some of the more experienced and proven names available in the platinum and gold categories. They had the option of taking Ismail to bolster their bowling but instead committed to the England duo. Bouchier played for Stars in 2021, just after her international debut, but has developed significantly as a player since then and was the fourth-leading scorer in the women’s Hundred this year. Capsey played all 14 games last season for Stars. She was their second-highest run-scorer and took nine wickets at an economy rate of just 6.98. Dunkley arrives for her first stint in the WBBL but comes as a proven international batter to give Stars batting some real depth and power. How they stack upStars have been the competition’s least competitive team having made just one finals series in 2020, although they did make it all the way to the final where they lost to Sydney Thunder. Last season they finished sixth and battled for depth in the absence of Lanning. But with the skipper returning and already finding some touch in the WNCL, as well as the addition of Dunkley and Bouchier, Stars suddenly bat very deep. The attack is a fraction light on but Kim Garth, Annabel Sutherland, Sasha Moloney and Sophie Day provide a reasonable core with Capsey able to add support. There is also some excitement about 18-year-old Victorian quick Milly Illingworth who looks set to make her WBBL debut this year.Player to watchAll eyes are on Meg Lanning. Her absence was felt competition-wide last year but especially by Stars. She is back fully fit and has already made a bright start in the WNCL with a brisk half-century on her return. If she has a big season with the bat, Stars will be very well-placed to make a run at the title. She has yet to captain on her return to cricket but her leadership experience will be invaluable for a very young group.Hayley Matthews is currently in the form of her life•Getty Images

Melbourne Renegades

Captain Hayley Matthews
Coach Simon HelmotSquad Tammy Beaumont (England), Sarah Coyte, Josie Dooley, Jess Duffin, Ellie Falconer, Ella Hayward, Ellie Falconer, Harmanpreet Kaur (India), Hayley Matthews (West Indies), Sophie Molineux (out injured), Georgia Prestwidge, Tayla Vlaeminck (out injured), Georgia Wareham, Courtney WebbHow the draft wentThe draft could not have gone better for Renegades retaining two of the world’s best players without needing to use their retention pick. While all of the clubs were keeping an eye on which world-class allrounder Sydney Thunder would take out of Marizanne Kapp and Sophie Devine, Renegades happily picked the world’s most in-form allrounder at present in Hayley Matthews with pick No. 2. They then waited as every other club passed on Harmanpreet Kaur and they were about to select India’s captain in the second round. The only cost of those was not retaining Shabnim Ismail but coach Simon Helmot had prioritised batting as a key area to bolster coming into the draft. They added Tammy Beaumont as a direct signing after the draft to lock-in arguably the best top-three in the WBBL.How they stack upHaving finished second on the table in 2021-22 and just missed the final, they had a poor season last year and finished second last. The absences of Harmanpreet and Jess Duffin then the season-ending injury to Molineux hurt them. They simply did not score enough runs with only two players averaging more than 20 for the season and none more than 27. Matthews was their highest runscorer with 253 from 14 innings, a paltry return compared to her 310 in three for West Indies against Australia just recently. They were very steady and miserly with the ball though and with some added batting strength this season that could set them up for success. It is a significant blow that Molineux has been ruled out for the whole season, but Harmanpreet’s return, after she was player of the tournament in 2021-22 is huge. Matthews returns a completely different player. Beaumont has been a run-machine in England this season becoming the first woman to score a century in the Hundred while Duffin returns after completing her Australian rules football career and adds valuable experience in the middle order. Fast bowler Tayla Vlaeminck will also miss the entire campaign as her injury-hit career continues.Player to watchThe WBBL hasn’t seen the best of Hayley Matthews yet. She has one fifty in 67 innings in her WBBL career, averaging 18.32 and striking at 100.53. Her economy rate with the ball in the WBBL is also higher than her career T20 rate although it is still good at 6.74. But she returns as a different player having won eight consecutive T20I player of the match awards and having tormented Australia, the all-conquering World Champions, with both bat and ball in the recent series. She was also player of the tournament at the inaugural WPL earlier this year, helping Mumbai Indians win the title, and led Barbados Royals to the WCPL title scoring 82 and taking two wickets in the final. If that version of Matthews turns up at the WBBL fully fit, look out.All-round star: Perth Scorchers kept Sophie Devine at the WBBL draft•Getty Images

CoachBecky GrundySquad Chloe Ainsworth, Charis Bekker, Stella Campbell, Piepa Cleary, Maddy Darke, Sophie Devine (New Zealand), Amy Edgar, Lisa Griffith, Amy Jones (England), Alana King, Lilly Mills, Beth Mooney, Taneale Peschel, Chloe Piparo, Nat Sciver-Brunt (England), Lauren Winfield-Hill (England)How the draft wentCaptain Sophie Devine returns after the Scorchers used their platinum selection on her. It will be her fourth season at the Scorchers, who she led to the title in WBBL 07. Scorchers also drafted England batter Danni Wyatt, but she withdrew from the tournament due to fatigue. It is understood Scorchers have pulled of a huge coup by securing England allrounder Nat Sciver-Brunt, who did not nominate for the draft, for an eight-game stint mid-tournament with Lauren Winfield-Hill to play the first six games until she arrives. England wicketkeeper-batter Amy Jones was secured through the direct nomination routeHow they stack upHaving won their first title in WBBL 07, Scorchers struggled last season and missed the finals. But hopes are high of a rebound under new head coach Becky Grundy, who takes the reins from Shelley Nitschke. Scorchers lost star allrounder Marizanne Kapp, but their opening partnership of Devine and Beth Mooney – a cornerstone of their title success – remains intact. They have a balanced attack with Alana King and Lilly Mills set to again form a menacing spin tandem. With a nice blend of international stars and local talent, bolstered by Sciver-Brunt’s appearance, the Scorchers should be back in the title mix.Player to watchScorchers’ title hopes were boosted by the addition of one-time Test quick Stella Campbell to beef up their pace stocks. It was an area that needed strengthening with Scorchers reliant on veterans Devine, Taneale Peschel and Piepa Cleary. Towering quick Campbell could ignite a career stalled by injuries on a WACA pitch where she might be able to generate significant bounce. Campbell, 21, had limited success with Sydney Sixers, but she’s one of the quickest bowlers in the country when fit. If she can stay on the field then Campbell might prove an x-factor for Scorchers, while re-emerging in the frame for national selection.Alyssa Healy will power Sydney Sixers’ top order•Getty Images

They have tried to replace her with two players: South Africa allrounder Chloe Tryon, who can provide some left-arm spin and hitting power, and New Zealand swing bowler Jess Kerr who has an excellent record in the powerplay but it remains to be seen whether the sum of those parts add up. Suzie Bates will return at the top of the order after taking the direct nomination route. How they stack upPlenty of familiar names led by the headline Australia trio of Alyssa Healy, Ellyse Perry and Ash Gardner. Sixers managed to shake off three years of underachievement last season by reaching the final – surging through the round-robin stage with 11 wins from 14 matches – before falling at the last hurdle against Strikers. Pace bowler Kate Peterson emerged as a wicket-taking star in the latter stages of last season. Alongside Ecclestone’s absence they have also lost the offspin of the retired Nicole Bolton while Perry is not expected to be able to bowl at the start of the tournament, and will miss the opening game due to an over-rate ban stemming from last season. Batter Mathilda Carmichael has made the move from Perth Scorchers. They have also put faith in youth with the signing of 17-year-old wicketkeeper-batter Kate Pelle.Player to watchAsh Gardner was player of the tournament last season with 339 runs (strike-rate 150.66) and 23 wickets and a few months later became the most expensive female player in the world at the WPL draft. The dynamic allrounder will be pivotal to Sixers’ hopes again. It has been a quiet start to the international season for her with the bat, but she has chipped in with the ball. There is a chance she will float a little in the batting depending on how the Sixers’ top order goes.Marizanne Kapp will bring all-round star quality to Sydney Thunder•ICC via Getty Images

Sydney Thunder

Captain Heather Knight
Coach Lisa KeightleySquad Chamari Athapaththu (Sri Lanka), Sam Bates, Lauren Bell (England), Paris Bowdler, Hannah Darlington, Marizanne Kapp (South Africa), Saskia Horley, Ebony Hoskin, Sammy-Jo Johnson, Heather Knight (England), Anika Learoyd, Phoebe Litchfield, Claire Moore, Olivia Porter, Lauren Smith, Tahlia WilsonHow the draft wentAfter finishing bottom last season, Thunder had the No. 1 draft pick and it feels like they came out of it very strongly. There was little surprise when they went with allrounder Marizanne Kapp who will bring class with bat and ball, then they were able to supplement her with England captain Heather Knight, who was a key part of the 2020-21 title and will lead them this season. England team-mate Lauren Bell was their third pick and the pace bowler will add another cutting edge to the attack. However, depending on the dates of England’s tour to India in December, Knight and Bell could be among the players who won’t be available for finals. How they stack upAfter being champions three seasons ago they have had two tough campaigns, finishing with just one win in 2022-23 which was Rachael Haynes’ last before retirement. It has, therefore, been a complete change at the top with Trevor Griffin replaced as coach by Lisa Keightley. The local names will be led by Phoebe Litchfield whose development as a T20 batter in recent months, highlighted by her record-equaling 18-ball fifty against West Indies, brings huge potential for Thunder in this tournament. The pace attack looks much stronger this season while Sam Bates is a consistent spinner. They could also have struck gold by recruiting Chamari Athapaththu from outside the draft.Player to watchLast season was interrupted one for Hannah Darlington due to injury and she played just seven matches taking seven wickets while her economy rate was high at 8.43. She has slipped down the Australia pecking order since her appearances in 2021 but there is another T20 World Cup next year in Bangladesh. The arrival of Kapp and Bell should take some of the pressure of her in the pace attack.

Originals jump to fourth on the back of Overton and Mir heroics

Jamie Overton smashed a superb 83 to lead the Manchester Originals to a dominant 40-run victory against the Northern Superchargers at Headingley.Overton’s maiden T20 fifty, which included nine fours and six sixes, was assisted by some fantastic spin bowling by Pakistan international Usama Mir, who took four for 19.Originals struggled with the new ball as they lost captain Jos Buttler and fellow opener Phil Salt in Reece Topley’s first 10 deliveries, with the England left-armer finishing with figures of three for 29. However, their progress with the ball was stemmed by brutal hitting from Overton.Superchargers did offer periods of resistance in their chase through Matthew Short and Saif Zaib, but Originals’ total of 182 proved far too much for the Leeds-based team.It was a second home defeat in three days for the Superchargers, who remained second on the table, while the Originals jumped from seventh to fourth.Having elected to bat at the toss, Originals had a nightmare start after Topley removed Salt, who had mistimed his shot which found Zaib at point, after only three balls. He then removed Originals captain Buttler for two, who edged a delivery into the gloves of Tom Banton.Originals then recovered with some powerful hitting from Laurie Evans, which included a delightful scoop shot for six off the bowling of David Wiese. After a rain delay, which meant the contest was reduced to 90 balls per side, Superchargers struck back with two wickets in two balls.Usama Mir jumps in celebration after dismissing Tom Banton•Stu Forster/Getty Images

First, Paul Walter departed for 22 after he skied a Brydon Carse delivery to a running Callum Parkinson at deep third, before Adil Rashid struck with his first ball to remove the dangerous Evans for 41 off 19 deliveries.Coming in at six, Overton smashed a Rashid delivery over the long-on boundary for six before Originals lost the wickets of overseas pair, Ashton Turner and Mir to Parkinson and Topley respectively. Then the Overton massacre began, in a partnership worth 72 with Tom Hartley, 62 of them came from the blade of the Surrey man, including a magnificent six from a Carse short ball, which sailed into the Western Terrace.Overton then hit the impressive Topley’s final set for 20, which included two fours and two sixes, to dent the figures of the tournament’s top wicket-taker. He then smashed 16 off the final set of the Originals’ innings to lead them to a total of 182 for six, with the all-rounder finishing not out on 83 from 30 balls. In their reply, Superchargers got off to a slow start, with just 18 runs coming from the first 15 balls.Australian Short hit the first six of the innings when he pulled a short ball from former Superchargers man Ben Raine over the ropes. The opener then hit a picture perfect cover drive for six before being bowled by the magical Mir for 37 off 16 balls. Two balls later, Mir took the wicket of the in-form Banton, who was bowled for 12 and then removed Adam Hose, after he tried to find the boundary with a reverse sweep, but could only find Walter at backward point.England’s Harry Brook looked good for 20, which included a six over the Rugby stand akin to Liam Livingstone’s one against Pakistan in 2021, but he became Mir’s fourth victim after he holed out to long-off.Superchargers’ hopes of victory then faltered, with only Zaib and Wayne Parnell putting up some resistance. The rest of the batting line-up departed cheaply to leave the Superchargers 141 for nine, resulting in a 40 run victory for Originals.

However, admiration needs to be handed Ange’s way in the manner he’s conducted himself through the situation, with the recent wins in the league evidence of what he’s capable of with a full quota.

Despite the protests around Levy’s future, the 63-year-old has spent big in certain situations, but it remains to be seen if his big-money additions are worth the fees paid.

Tottenham’s record signings under Daniel Levy

In the summer just gone, the Spurs owner forked out a club-record £65m for the signature of striker Dominic Solanke from Bournemouth, handing the manager the forward he craved after Harry Kane’s departure.

The Englishman has been missing since the middle of January with a knee injury, halting his progress in North London after his impressive start to life, registering 17 combined goals and assists in his first 29 matches.

Tottenham striker Dominic Solanke

The 27-year-old moved to the club after Richarlison failed to nail down the regular role at the top end of the pitch, scoring 18 times across the last three seasons with the Lilywhites.

He cost a whopping £50m from fellow top-flight outfit Everton, but the big-money fee spent hasn’t been worthwhile, undoubtedly going down as a miss for Levy.

However, the Brazilian isn’t the only player to fail to live up to his mammoth fee in North London, joining another player who only demonstrated his quality in glimpses.

The Spurs flop who’s now similar to a £100m talent

Back in the summer of 2019, Spurs spent big on midfielder Tanguy Ndombele from French side Lyon, costing £63m, a then-club record, before Solanke’s rival.

Tanguy Ndombele

After such a fee, there’s no denying that excitement built among the fanbase over his move, but unfortunately, the now 28-year-old was only able to showcase his skillset on a consistent basis.

He would feature a total of 91 times for the Lilywhites over a three-year period, spending two separate spells on loan at Napoli and Galatasaray before his contract was cut short – allowing him to depart on a free transfer last summer.

Whilst he produced some moments of magic, including his superb effort against Sheffield United, unfortunately, he was unable to produce such levels on a regular basis – leading to his departure with concerns around his attitude and fitness.

However, in the last few months since his departure, he’s moved back to France, joining Nice on a free transfer, recapturing his form which saw Spurs fork out such a hefty fee for his services.

Tottenham's Tanguy Ndombele

Such is the impressive nature of his performances, the “unbelievable” Ndombele, as dubbed by journalist Jack-Pitt Brooke, he’s been compared by FBref as a similar player to Newcastle’s Bruno Guimaraes – who previously had a £100m release clause in his deal.

When comparing his figures to the Brazilian in 2024/25, the Frenchman has matched or bettered the Magpies star in numerous key areas, highlighting how impressive he’s been since leaving North London.

It’s great to see a former first-team star after such a tricky period during his time as a player in North London – potentially needing more time to adapt to life in England.

However, after such an impressive run, some of the fanbase may wish they had kept hold of him, with Ndombele having the skill set to feature amid the recent injury troubles.

Surge boost: Devine likely to start WBBL season in middle order

The New Zealand allrounder is expected to slot in at No. 4 at least until the arrival of Nat Sciver-Brunt

Sophie Devine continues her association with Perth Scorchers•Getty Images

Perth Scorchers captain Sophie Devine is set to take on a middle-order role for at least the first part of the WBBL campaign.Scorchers, who missed finals last season after being champions the summer before, have stacked their top order with overseas signings through England duo Amy Jones and Lauren Winfield-Hill alongside Devine. Winfield-Hill will play the first six games before the arrival of star allrounder Nat Sciver-Brunt with the duo replacing Danni Wyatt who pulled out of her deal having been an original draft pick. When Sciver-Brunt joins there will be further changes to the batting order, but to start the season Winfield-Hill is expected to open alongside Beth Mooney with Devine coming in at No. 4.Related

Lanning 'disappointed' and 'frustrated' at Sciver-Brunt's likely WBBL signing

Benchmark WBBL faces biggest challenges yet

It’s a role she has taken for New Zealand this year, including during the recently completed tour of South Africa where she made 61 off 37 balls in the second T20I, and believes it can help Scorchers exploit the power surge – the latter two overs of the powerplay which can be taken by the batting side after the 10th over.”That’s certainly one of the options,” Devine said. “Lauren is a world-class opener with a lot of experience. We know she can bat anywhere in the top order as well, but think certainly initially we’ll look to me to drop down the order a little bit.”Coming off the back of the New Zealand tour, batting in that No. 4 role, it’s a role I’m starting to get a lot more comfortable with. The tempo I play at, especially with the format of the Big Bash with the surge, I think it’s a really important part. We’ve seen teams really dominate last year in terms of clear tactics and think that’s an area we can expose a bit better than we did last year.”In tournament like this, you need the ability to change things. We’ve got a lot of bases covered.”The late signing of Sciver-Brunt has been controversial given she did not originally nominate for the draft due to injury. Meg Lanning has been critical of the move as Melbourne Stars would have had retention rights had she been available. When the ECB cleared her for the tournament, Scorchers had the remaining salary cap to take advantage.”It’s an interesting one around the draft and the purpose of it,” Devine said. “With Nat’s situation and her knee injury, that’s why she didn’t enter into the draft. We certainly had no contact with her before then. Every club had the opportunity to sign Nat when she became available and she chose the Scorchers which I think shows a lot about this club.”When a player like that comes around you snap her up with two hands. Think it’s vital we keep getting the best players in the world into his tournament, it’s what makes it so great.”Devine herself was at the mercy of the draft with Scorchers needing to decide between her and Marizanne Kapp, although it was always felt the likely result that she would return to Perth. Kapp went to Sydney Thunder as the No. 1 pick.”I was actually quite nervous,” she said. “Scorchers held all the cards with who they were going to retain. I probably didn’t get told too much. I had real hopes I’d come back but was also prepared if things fell the other way. I mean Marizanne Kapp is one of the best, if not the best, players in the world in this format. It’s pretty special to come back here.”

Clark's 4 for 36 helps set up 10-wicket victory for Surrey

Fifties to James Rew, Craig Overton only prolong the inevitable for Somerset

ECB Reporters Network27-Jul-2023Jordan Clark claimed four wickets as Surrey strengthened their position at the top of the First Division table with a comprehensive LV= Insurance County Championship victory over Somerset inside three days at Taunton. The hosts began their second innings at the start of play trailing by 198 runs and were bowled out for 226, Clark taking 4 for 36 to help set up a ten-wicket victory.James Rew contributed 55, becoming the first player in Division One to pass 1,000 runs for the season at the age of 19, while Craig Overton smacked five sixes in a defiant 70 not out. But Surrey were left to make only 29 and reached their target in 8.3 overs.Somerset took only three points from the match after two brittle batting efforts, while their opponents claimed 22 to maintain a healthy lead over nearest challengers Essex.Related

Middlesex bowlers set up easy chase as Stoneman sees them home at Edgbaston

With only four balls bowled, the morning session was interrupted by rain. When play resumed at 12.10pm, any hope Somerset had of getting back into the game disappeared with some abject top-order batting.Sean Dickson had already survived a chance to third slip when in the same Clark over, the fourth of the innings, he edged to first slip where Dom Sibley made no mistake.Four overs later, Tom Lammonby swished at a wide delivery from Clark, which he might have left and Will Jacks held a low two-handed catch. It was 23 for 3 when George Bartlett shouldered arms to a Clark delivery that crashed into his pads on off stump and fell lbw. With only five runs added, Kohler-Cadmore directed a sharp catch off Dan Worrall to Jamie Overton at backward point.Clark finished his opening spell with figures of 3 for 15 from six overs. But Tom Abell put a blameless pitch in perspective with sound shot selection and by lunch, which was taken at 46 for 4, the Somerset skipper had struck four boundaries in moving to 27.Rew, who had taken 32 balls to get off the mark in the first innings, again displayed a patience lacking in more experienced team-mates and had yet to open his account, having faced ten deliveries. The afternoon session saw Rew and Abell progress their partnership to 64 with few alarms, the prolific teenager reaching a four-figure run tally for the summer when moving to 21 with a single to cover off Worrall. But Clark returned at the Marcus Trescothick Pavilion End to pin Abell leg before for 46 with a yorker and at 92 for 5 Somerset still required 106 to make Surrey bat again.Kasey Aldridge edged a short, wide ball from Tom Lawes to third slip where Jacks took an excellent diving catch as his side continued to gift wickets with injudicious strokes. An exception was Rew, content to accumulate quietly without resorting to big shots until, with his score on 31, he effortlessly lifted a ball from Lawes over deep backward square for six.Ben Green was caught behind looking to drive a full-length delivery from Jamie Overton to make it 130 for 7 before Rew went to fifty for the seventh time this season, off 96 balls, with four fours and a six.The unflappable young wicketkeeper, who doesn’t turn 20 until January, had turned five of his previous half-centuries into hundreds, with a top score of 221 against Hampshire at Taunton. At tea, Somerset were 139 for 7, still trailing by 59. They had added just six runs when Rew, perhaps feeling he was running out of partners, top-edged a pull shot off Gus Atkinson and skied a catch to fine leg. He had faced 106 balls in another mature contribution. The end looked nigh as Atkinson quickly followed up by sending back Matt Henry, lbw to a yorker. But Craig Overton had other ideas, launching a savage attack with powerful pulls and drives that saw him take 20 off an Atkinson over and dominate a last wicket stand of 77 in 13 overs with Shoaib Bashir. It merely prevented the inevitable and Surrey wrapped up victory at just before 6.15pm with openers Rory Burns and Dom Sibley completing the job.

Fewer touches than Sa: Pereira got it wrong by starting 6/10 Wolves star

Despite a fighting effort from Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux, they suffered a 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Fulham. It was a game in which the Old Gold dominated, but could not get over the line against a Cottagers side fighting for Europe.

Vitor Pereira’s side went 1-0 down just one minute into the game. It was a brilliant piece of play from Fulham, who, within a few passes, were in the Wolves penalty box, with Ryan Sessegnon slotting home past Jose Sa. It was far from ideal defending from Wolves, who gifted the Englishman acres of space on the left.

However, the West Midlands outfit hit back with almost 18 minutes on the clock. It was a sublime finish from midfielder Joao Gomes from which they equalised, thrashing home a volley into the roof of the net.

Wolves started the second half much like they did the first, by conceding a goal. This time it was two minutes after kick-off, with Rodrigo Muniz making a run in behind the defence and dinking a finish over the onrushing Sa.

Pereira’s side never managed to get themselves back in the game and ended up as the losing side. However, there were some standout performers, particularly Matheus Cunha and Gomes.

Wolves' best players against Fulham

Wolves’ Brazilian duo are simply vital players at Molineux. Although they were defeated against Fulham, the two still stood out. He did not get a goal or assist on Tuesday night, but Cunha was certainly excellent against the Cottagers.

One of the most impressive things was his influence off the ball. As per Sofascore, the 25-year-old won an exceptional nine out of 14 ground duels, whilst still creating one chance and completing two out of three dribbles.

As for Gomes, he put in a great showing in a more advanced midfield role aside from his goal. The midfielder’s sensational strike, which left Bernd Leno with no chance of saving it, was the highlight of his night, but he was also a creative influence.

This was noted by Charlie Haffenden, journalist for Birmingham World. He gave the Brazilian an 8/10 for his performance, explaining that he ‘created one good opportunity’ for his fellow attacking midfielder Cunha.

Despite the loss, there were certainly positives to take from the clash against Marco Silva’s side. However, a few players did struggle, including one man who was utilised out of position.

The Wolves star who struggled against Fulham

It was a tough night at the office for January arrival Marshall Munetsi, who played as a centre-forward on Tuesday evening, despite Jorgen Stand Larsen being available and on the bench.

However, it’s safe to say that the experiment for Munetsi to lead the line did not quite work.

The Zimbabwean, who is a midfielder by trade, was rather isolated against the Cottagers. Although he was a presence in the opposition penalty box, the 28-year-old did not make much of an impact, and perhaps could have made a better contribution in the midfield role he is more used to playing.

The stats certainly demonstrate just how well the former Reims star struggled. Despite playing the entire game, he had just 24 touches, fewer than Old Gold goalkeeper Sa. He also won three from six duels and did not manage a shot on target, out of two efforts.

Haffenden pointed out one of the issues Munetsi had against the West Londoners. The journalist explained he ‘was unable to make much stick in the final third’ despite being ‘heavily involved’ at both ends of the pitch.

It was a tough night for the Old Gold, with the experiment starting Munetsi as a centre-forward instead of Larsen ultimately not paying off. It has certainly given Pereira something to think about ahead of their next fixture, an FA Cup clash against Bournemouth.
