A partir do momento que veio à tona a possível ida do treinador português para o Rubro-Negro, o Timão permaneceu em silêncio. Showman Broad entertains to the end in fitting finale

Master of self-improvement and reinvention, Broad was a great survivor

Matt Roller31-Jul-20232:24

Stokes ‘proud’ of England team and ‘inspiring’ Stuart Broad

It might not have ended like this. There was the mutinous interview in an Ageas Bowl portacabin. The calf injury that ruled him out of the India series two years ago. The exasperation of the Ashes series he voided, and a blind-siding omission from the squad that toured the Caribbean. But Stuart Broad has often been confronted with his temporality as a Test cricketer across the course of a 16-year career, and has usually responded in the same way. Broad was the master of self-improvement, a man who constantly reinvented himself. It was the only way to survive, and Broad was a great survivor. This was a fitting finale. Broad was predominantly a showman, a great entertainer who played to the gallery, and his bail-switch that immediately preceded his dismissal of Todd Murphy was another moment of pantomime that only he could pull off in the midst of a tense final-day run chase. And yet there was another side to Broad, one that was harder to detect from the public persona who geed up the crowd, wearing a bandana out of superstition and a masterful comedian as well as cricketer.Related

Behind closed doors, he was a meticulous thinker about the game, described by his Nottinghamshire and ex-England coach Peter Moores as “the best tactician that I’ve been lucky enough to coach”. It was no coincidence that, with two left-handers frustrating England, Ben Stokes threw the ball to Broad.”You’ve seen the way he bowls at them,” Stokes said. It was not always that way: Broad took 71 wickets at 41.11 against left-handers before 2015. But extensive research ahead of that summer’s Ashes series prompted him to change his default angle from over the wicket to around; since 2015, he has dismissed 122 left-handers at 24.85.”That’s part of my personality,” Broad explained. “I’ve never been an amazing trainer. I need to have something to aim for in training all the time, that spurs me on. I need to have a new skill to be working on, otherwise I could float through training a little bit.”Returning after tea, Broad bowled exclusively from around the wicket, inducing regular plays-and-misses; two in a row from Murphy prompted his bail-switch in an attempt to change his luck. “I just kept saying, ‘Keep bowling the same ball over and over again,'” Stokes said. After Murphy edged behind, Broad created two final chances. Carey nicked him to second slip where Zak Crawley spilled a tough low catch, before edging through to Bairstow in Broad’s following over. Both balls were textbook late Broad: angling in before nipping away off the seam to take the edge.Stuart Broad celebrates taking the wicket of Alex Carey and victory•Getty Images

Another feature of Broad’s self-improvement has been his desire to lower his “leave percentage” – a statistic that is rarely referenced publicly by anyone other than him. Four years ago, Moores told Broad that Kunal Manek, the Nottinghamshire analyst, had noticed an uptick in the proportion of his deliveries that batters left alone.”I judge myself now on how much I make a batsman play in a day,” Broad said during the 2019 Ashes. “If I am bowling badly, my leave percentage will be 30 percent – I am getting left 30 percent of the time. If I am bowling brilliantly, it will be 16 percent or 17 percent.”On his final day as a Test cricketer, it was down at eight percent: Australia’s batters left only seven of the 88 balls that he bowled. Broad will not be aware of that statistic as he basks in the glow of his farewell on Monday night, but there is one that makes him prouder than any other: his tally of 153 wickets against Australia, the most by an Englishman and a record that may never be broken. In the build-up to this series, Broad played down his chances of playing anything more than a bit-part role. Instead, he was the only England bowler to feature in all five Tests, finished the summer as their leading wicket-taker, and took centre-stage as six weeks of drama came to a head in the final moments of the series. If there is such a thing as destiny in sport, Stuart Broad was destined not to bow out quietly. “I am not too emotional, to be honest,” he reflected, speaking moments after clinching England’s win. “Taking those last two wickets proved to me that I still loved taking wickets because I just ran around like a headless chicken. I still have that emotion and love for winning Test matches.”To take a wicket to win an Ashes Test match being my final ball was something that will make me smile for the rest of my life,” he added. “When the dust has settled it will sink in. It still doesn’t feel massively real. When I told the guys I couldn’t remember what I said. I didn’t feel like I was in my own body; I feel a little bit like that now.”Broad made an admission on Saturday night that is rare to hear from an elite athlete: “I know I am not the most skilful player that’s played,” he said. But if his eventual Test bowling average, 27.68, does not secure him a place among the game’s greatest fast bowlers, his longevity will – a longevity secured by his self-professed addiction to the sport.

South Africa name Wandile Gwavu as white-ball fielding coach

He joins the national men’s set-up after four seasons at the Johannesburg-based Lions team, where he won five titles

Firdose Moonda12-May-2023Three days after securing automatic qualification to the 2023 World Cup, South Africa are filling up their backroom staff ahead of the tournament. Wandile Gwavu has been named white-ball fielding coach and will work under Rob Walter, who was appointed earlier in the year, and alongside batting coach JP Duminy.A permanent bowling coach is yet to be identified after Rory Kleinveldt did the job in an interim capacity last summer.Gwavu joins the national men’s set-up after four seasons at the Johannesburg-based Lions team, where he won five titles. He has also worked with the Jozi Stars in the now defunct Mzansi Super League and with the Joburg Super Kings in the SA20. In addition, he been involved with South Africa’s Under-19 and A sides.”He brings a wealth of experience at the highest level in South African cricket with a coaching career that speaks volumes,” Enoch Nkwe, South Africa’s director of cricket said. “With the fine margins and the ever-increasing stakes in 50-over and T20 cricket, fielding has become a critical part of any successful team and we strongly believe Wandile’s expertise will help the Proteas maintain their strong tradition of fielding excellence across both formats.”Gwavu replaces Justin Ontong, who was part of Mark Boucher’s coaching staff and is understood to have applied for the vacant position at Paarl, where Duminy was head coach. Both Paarl and the Lions are now searching for new head coaches ahead of the 2023/24 season. Gwavu’s first assignment with the team will be the white-ball series against Australia which starts on August 30 and includes three T20Is and five ODIs.

Senanayake arrested on charges related to match-fixing

He is alleged to have attempted to convince players to fix in the 2020 Lanka Premier League

Andrew Fidel Fernando06-Sep-2023Former Sri Lanka offspinner Sachithra Senanayake has been arrested by Sri Lanka Police on Wednesday, on charges related to match-fixing. According to the police’s media division, he is due to be produced in court in the next 24 hours.Senanayake, 38, is alleged to have attempted to convince players to fix in the 2020 Lanka Premier League. Although he was not himself a player in this tournament, and is understood to have been overseas at the time, Senanayake is alleged to have contacted more than one player taking part in the LPL. This information was then allegedly conveyed to the tournament’s anti-corruption officers. The arrest was made under the Prevention of Offences Relating to Sports Act, which was introduced in 2019. Under this law, “any person who solicits, entices, persuades, or instructs any person… to influence the result, progress, conduct … of any sport, commits the offence of corruption in sports”. This is the first arrest made under this act.Last month, a court had also imposed a travel ban on Senanayake, after a probe was launched into the allegations.Senanayake had had something of a storied career before being pulled up on his action in 2014. He’d been a key part of Sri Lanka’s triumphant 2014 T20 World Cup campaign, and had also been bought for USD $625,000 by Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2013 IPL season.Although he made a return in 2014 with a remodeled bowling action, his career declined thereafter. He played the last of his 49 ODIs in December 2015, and the last of his 24 T20Is in 2016. He also played one Test in 2013, but didn’t take any wickets.

Luis Diaz salary: How much does Liverpool star earn per week and annually in Premier League?

Everything you need to know about Luis Diaz's salary at Liverpool

Colombian star Luis Diaz made headlines with Porto during the 2021-22 season, scoring and assisting freely in the Primeira Liga. His impressive performances attracted interest from top Premier League clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool. Eventually, it was the Merseyside club that secured his signature in the January transfer window, marking the beginning of his Premier League journey.

It didn't take long for Diaz to adapt to life at Liverpool, quickly becoming a key player under then-manager Jurgen Klopp. He played a vital role in helping the Reds reach the Champions League final the following season, although they ultimately lost to Real Madrid.

Diaz soon delivered major silverware at Anfield, leading the attack alongside Mohamed Salah and helping the team secure the Premier League title under Arne Slot in the 2024-25 season.

His current contract with Liverpool runs until 2027, and while he is well-compensated for his contributions, his salary remains relatively modest compared to some of the club's top earners. So, exactly how much does the Colombian make?

Nat Sciver-Brunt, Maia Bouchier plunder Sri Lanka before Charlie Dean seals series

England make 273 for 8 in 31 overs after rain delay, then close out series in style

Valkerie Baynes14-Sep-2023Ever ask yourself: “What am I doing here?” Cricket fans – at least those who take our privileged position of being able to watch the game regularly for granted – surely do. Especially sitting through interminable rain delays, mopping-up, pitch inspections… repeat. Then you witness another fairytale and realise, this is what I’m doing here. This time, it was Nat Sciver-Brunt’s turn. Playing her 100th ODI and captaining the side after Heather Knight was forced to return to the team hotel feeling unwell, she plundered 120 off 74 balls, including a 66-ball century – which was the fastest by an England Women’s player in ODIs – to lead her side to a thumping 161-run victory over Sri Lanka in the third and final match in Leicester for a 2-0 series win.Maia Bouchier was far more than just a bit-part character with her blistering 95 from 65 balls as the pair rescued their side from 18 for 2 with a 193-run partnership for the third wicket. Between them they set Sri Lanka a daunting target of 274 in a match reduced to 31 overs a side, after rain delayed the start by more than three hours (along with mopping-up efforts and pitch inspections). Then Charlie Dean appeared, taking a maiden international five-wicket haul to put the ending beyond doubt. This entire tour by Sri Lanka has produced some gripping narratives. The visitors’ 2-1 upset in the T20I series, including their first victories in the format against England – ranked six places higher – was built on captain Chamari Athapaththu’s stellar year with the bat and exposed the hosts’ weakness against spin. Then followed the dream ODI debuts of young seamers Mahika Gaur and Lauren Filer in the opening match as the hosts turned things around before taking a stranglehold of the second fixture which was ultimately washed out.Yes, this victory also came against a side ranked considerably lower than England in the 50-over format but that takes nothing away from the performance of Sciver-Brunt.It was less than a week ago that Sciver-Brunt returned to the England side, having been rested for the T20I series after being England’s Player of the Women’s Ashes, although she helped Blaze to victory over Central Sparks with an unbeaten 66 in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy during that time. Her comeback match came in a seven-wicket win in Durham, a year after she left an England training camp in the same city to take an extended mental health break.Just as Ben Stokes did with England Men, Sciver-Brunt has led by example in terms of enabling players to speak up when they need to care for their mental wellbeing. And, just as Stokes did with his 182 in the third ODI against New Zealand the previous day, Sciver-Brunt again highlighted her indispensability to any side she is part of, taking charge of the storyline after a fraught start when the visitors won the toss and opted to bowl under heavy skies.Maia Bouchier made her maiden ODI fifty•PA Photos/Getty Images

Tammy Beaumont survived on 1 when she struck Udeshika Prabodhani hard but straight to Harshitha Smarawickrama, who fumbled the chance at deep midwicket. Achini Kulasuriya then beat Beaumont’s outside edge with an excellent ball which also just missed off stump, then tempted Beaumont to advance on the next ball, only to be caught by Hasini Perera at slip.Bouchier, opening alongside Beaumont with Emma Lamb out with a back spasm, despatched Prabodhani over deep midwicket for six next over. Prabodhani responded by castling Alice Capsey, who managed just 6 batting in Knight’s place at No. 3, and England were struggling inside the six-over Powerplay which they ended at 28 for 2.But by the 10-over mark that had become 72 for 2, thanks in no small part to Sciver-Brunt, who helped herself to 15 of the 16 runs conceded by Inoka Ranaweera in her first over, her back-foot drive through cover followed by a thunderous pull to the rope at deep midwicket and a monstrous six into the stands beyond long-off.Bouchier, who made her ODI debut in Durham having played 22 T20Is, kept pace beautifully, launching a free hit of Hansima Karunaratne following a no-ball for height, over the fence with disdain at cow corner for her second maximum. She brought up her maiden 50-over fifty with the second of three fours in a row as she peppered the leg side off Oshadi Ranasinghe.Sciver brought up her half-century in just 32 balls with four off Ranaweera and she raised England’s 150 with a nonchalant scoop to the fine leg boundary off Kavisha Dilhari, one of three fours conceded by the young off-spinner in her first over as the England batters continued picking them off at will.Prabodhani did her best to end their union just before they reached the 200-mark in the 23rd over with one that beat Sciver-Brunt’s back-foot swipe and somehow evaded off stump. Sciver-Brunt brought up her century moments later with a single off Kulasuriya, but then Dilhari pinned Bouchier lbw to end a brilliant innings.Sciver-Brunt didn’t flinch, peeling off three fours from the same Dilhari over and another off Ranaweera through extra cover, but she perished next ball, picking out long-off.That brought debutant Bess Heath to the crease and she managed 21 off 14 balls, including a six over deep midwicket off Kulasuriya and a reverse-sweep for four off Dilhari, who then ended Heath’s cameo as she holed out to Karunaratne.Gaur and Filer again combined to make inroads on the Sri Lanka line-up and when off-spinner Dean trapped Athapaththu lbw for just 12 in the ninth over, Sri Lanka were in deep trouble at 46 for 4.Dean, called upon to lead the spin-bowling attack alongside Sarah Glenn with Sophie Ecclestone sidelined initially through workload management but now because of a shoulder injury, then produced the epilogue, snaring three wickets in five balls to all but close the book on the match. Her return catch to remove Karuanaratne was followed by Perera, Sri Lanka’s top-scorer with 32, caught behind and then an excellent delivery that turned between bat and pad and crashed into Dilhari’s off stump. Her fifth wicket came as Prabodhani dragged on and Filer sealed victory with her third, rearranging Kulasuriya’s stumps to end her breakout season on a high.So ended England Women’s international summer, with progress made, talent unearthed, lessons learned and work still to do, all the while leaving that empty feeling that you get at the end of a real page-turner, because we won’t see the results for months to come. That’s what we’re doing here.

Celtic must unleash "wonderful" star who’s replicating Sutton & Larsson

da betano casino: There’s no place better to be on a European night than Celtic’s Parkhead, and European nights don’t come much bigger than this in Glasgow’s East End.

da imperador bet: Following an impressive league phase campaign, accumulating 12 points and remaining unbeaten at home, the Celts have reached the Champions League knockout phase for the first time since 2012/13.

Now, if they’re to go any further, they must overcome six-times European champions Bayern Munich, as the Hoops aim to win a knockout stage tie in any UEFA competition for the first time since dumping Barcelona out of the UEFA Cup 21 years ago.

It goes without saying that Brendan Rodgers’ side are massive underdogs, but one Celtic superstar attacker in particular could certainly cause the Bundesliga leaders problems.

Bayern Munich's defensive vulnerability

To give Celtic supporters some hope, Vincent Kompany’s side have actually lost all three of their Champions League fixtures played outside of Germany this season, narrowly beaten at Villa Park before being battered 4-1 by Barcelona at Montjuïc and then, far more surprisingly, 3-0 by Feyenoord at De Kuip last month.

Harry Kane for Bayern Munich

Die Rekordmeister also conceded three times at home to relegation-threatened Holstein Kiel the weekend before last, luckily they were already 4-0 up at the time, but their lack of defensive solidity has come under some scrutiny.

Total Football Analysis describes Kompany’s “high defensive line” strategy as “high risk”, adding that Bayern’s centre-backs are prone to “individual mistakes” and can be “easily outpaced… in the footrace”.

In a separate Total Football Analysis article, it’s also highlighted that “individual mistakes are becoming more frequent” for French centre-back Dayot Upamecano in particular, with errors most common in build-up and direct 1v1 duels, especially when “in pressure situations close to his own goal”.

Meantime, Manuel Veth of Forbes adds that opponents require “just a few good moments to capitalise on defensive errors”, which are guaranteed to come given that Kim Min-jae and Upamecano will be the centre-back pairing, while Michael Cox of the Athletic outlines that Bayern’s aggressive “man-marking” leaves them vulnerable to quick through-balls.

Speaking on Sky Sports Deutschland earlier this season, legendary midfielder Lothar Matthäus, who made 410 career appearances for the Bavarian juggernauts, winning 13 major honours, as well as the World Cup and the Euros, noted that “defence remains Bayern’s Achilles heel”.

So, do Celtic have just the man to exploit this clear weakness?

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Celtic's main man can cause Bayern problems

Speaking on Total Soccer Show’s weekend review, Graham Ruthven stated that he is “looking forward to” seeing the “very fast” Daizen Maeda up against Bayern’s back-line.

This comes following the surprise news that the Japanese forward would be available after his two-match ban, for a red card against BSC Young Boys, had been reduced to one following appeal, which he’s already served.

On Saturday, Maeda scored a hat-trick as the Hoops hammered Raith Rovers 5-0 in the Scottish Cup, taking his tally to 50 goals for the club, 21 of which have come this season.

The forward has been earning rave reviews, with a BBC Sport report calling him “wonderful” while, speaking on Premier Sports’ Scottish Football Social Club, former Hearts and Hibs midfielder Michael Stewart believes Maeda has “stepped up a level” in recent weeks, adding he has become “top class”.

During the league phase, Maeda scored against Slovan Bratislava, Borussia Dortmund and Club Brugge, now aiming to become the first Celtic player since Joe Craig in 1977/78 to score four or more goals in a single Champions League campaign.

According to FBref, Maeda’s goals – xG figure in this season’s Champions League is +1.8, with his 11 shots taken from an average of 12.5 yards from goal, underlining that he’s become more clinical.

As his goal against Rangers highlights, Maeda is a constant pest in behind, with Thomas Duncan of BBC Sport believing he has “seemingly unlimited stamina”, while Josh McCafferty of the National adds that the Japanese forward is “electric”.

Following Kyōgo Furuhashi’s departure last month, Rodgers has a decision to make at centre-forward.

Adam Idah, who scored twice in a matter of moments against Aston Villa on matchday eight, is the most obvious central striker, but we’re advocating for Maeda to be deployed down the middle, flanked by Nicolas Kühn and the returning Jota, as this could be the best way Celtic can exploit Bayern’s weakness, which is their centre-back duo.

Celtic can silence Kane with Hoops star who's worth more than Idah & Jota

The Celtic titan is currently valued at more than Adam Idah and Jota combined.
