Leicester approached with chance to sign "unbelievable" ace in £21m deal

da apostebet: Still two points adrift of safety, Leicester City have reportedly been offered the chance to sign a Premier League player who could yet help Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side secure survival at the first time of asking back in the top flight.

Leicester transfer news

da doce: The Foxes haven’t been short on entertainment under Van Nistelrooy, but they have fallen short of results as was the case once again against Aston Villa last time out. On the wrong end of a 2-1 defeat despite an impressive performance, Leicester were left frustrated and begging the question as to whether they need to return to the transfer market this month if they want to avoid the drop.

If the answer to that question is a resounding yes then the Foxes could reportedly turn towards the likes of Udinese defender Thomas Kristensen, who stands at a staggering 6 foot 6 to potentially solve Van Nistelrooy’s defensive concerns.

Meanwhile, they could also turn towards a familiar face in the Premier League this month. According to Caught Offside, Leicester have now been approached with the chance to sign Miguel Almiron this month, with Newcastle United valuing their winger at between €20-25m (£17-21m).

One of several clubs to have reportedly been approached, the Foxes seemingly have a decision to make before the end of the month. The out-of-favour Newcastle man would certainly replace the injured Issahaku Fatawu, who has been ruled out for the rest of the season through an ACL injury, but it remains to be seen whether they’d meet an expensive price tag.

The Foxes could weaken their rivals…

ByTom Cunningham Jan 2, 2025

Now 30 years old, Almiron’s current Newcastle deal expires in the summer of 2026, meaning that the Magpies are running out of time to truly cash in on their winger.

"Unbelievable" Almiron would replace Fatawu

To say that Fatawu’s injury was poorly timed would be quite the understatement. The winger was just beginning to show glimpses of top flight quality – quality that could have taken his side to survival before he was ruled out for a lengthy period back in November. Now, the Foxes must find a way to replace that quality with the January transfer window underway.

In that regard, Almiron is certainly an interesting option. Whilst he has far from set the world alight in the last two seasons, it wasn’t so long ago that he was stealing the show at St James’ Park with 15 goal involvements in the 2022/23 campaign. And Leicester could yet play a part in rediscovering such form.

Eddie Howe has been quick to praise Almiron even amid his current struggles, telling reporters back in December as relayed by The Chronicle: “Miggy is still Miggy in absolutely every way! And I mean that as a compliment. He’s smiley, happy and focused. He is professional and an unbelievable guy.

“I can’t praise him and his professionalism enough this season in what has been a difficult season for him because he has not had the minutes he would have wanted. He has never lacked that in what he has shown for us. Everything that he has delivered for us we know he is ready to play if needed.”

The fast life of Tino Best

His autobiography tells the story of a flamboyant cricketer better remembered for a batting innings and a sledge than the pace he worked hard to achieve

Alan Gardner31-Jul-2016What is Tino Best most famous for? The title of his autobiography, , suggests that Andrew Flintoff’s cheeky sledge about Best’s batting – he was stumped giving Ashley Giles the charge at Lord’s in 2004, as West Indies attempted to see out the final day of the Test for a draw – takes the prize. Then again, his 95 against England at Edgbaston in 2012 was also pretty memorable. Best briefly held the record for the highest score by a No. 11 in Tests, until Australia’s Ashton Agar – “a number six, not a number eleven,” Best grouses – waltzed his way to 98 the following summer. More recently, thanks to the serialisation of one of the chapters from his book, entitled “The Playboy Lifestyle”, he came to attention for his love of maidens. No, not that kind. As he writes: “I was a man whore.”There are many reasons to remember the name Tino la Bertram Best – not least because of that distinctive, flamboyant “la Bertram” in the middle, which Best claims means “the greatest”. Sadly his bowling is not right at the top of the list; and that really is a shame, given that, for a time at least, he was one of the quickest going around.Despite his relative lack of success at international level, it is impossible not to warm to Best and be impressed by his life story. Inspired by his uncle, the West Indies batsman Carlisle Best, and the example set by his mother and four aunts, Best overcame the apparent disadvantage of being 5ft 8in to open the bowling for Barbados – for whom he has an excellent record – and then West Indies. Capable of getting it through above 95mph, he rubbed shoulders with Brett Lee and Shoaib Akhtar in cricket’s fast lane.Growing up without the influence of his father, who struggled with drug addiction and never saw Best play for West Indies, he overcame rejection at the start of his career, having turned up late for a trial with Barbados Under-19s. Although he wanted to be like Uncle Carlisle – who hooked his third ball in Tests for six and scored 164 against England in Bridgetown in 1990 – Best discovered he could bowl at the sort of speed revered around the Caribbean as “pace like fire”.In his own, inimitable, words: “I was as fast as a raccoon.” Hard work in the gym, and on the army base that provided his early employment outside of cricket, meant Best was soon being talked about beyond his native island. He was, however, “a Ferrari without a steering wheel”, and it would not be long before he sped off course at one of the many bends in the road encountered over a 15-year career. After being called up to face Australia at the age of 21, he experienced the unique difficulties involved with representing a collection of countries under one flag. West Indies players are “all from different nations, with different cultures and from different backgrounds”, making team spirit harder to build. The fact that he saw Ricky Ponting dropped off his bowling by Shivnarine Chanderpaul – in the gully, where Best observes “there’d be no way” his Barbados team-mate Sulieman Benn would have missed the chance – on his first day in Test cricket did not help. “It was my first big international match and I felt lonely.”There was also the expectation that came with being a quick bowler from a lineage as rich as West Indies’. It was more than a year later that Best bagged his first Test wicket – England’s Graeme Thorpe, caught at long leg attempting to hook, at Sabina Park – and his first crack at international cricket seemed to bring rewards inversely proportional to the effort Best put in. “People said I was the next Malcolm Marshall before I’d even played a Test,” he writes. “I just wanted to be Tino Best.”John Blake PublishingThis was when Best’s off-field performances overtook his impact with bat or ball for West Indies. A father himself at the age of 19, Best cheated on his childhood sweetheart and subsequently decided to enjoy the opportunities afforded by the lifestyle of an international athlete. On a tour of Australia, he was overlooked by the coach, Bennett King. “But I was bowling fast – at night.”It all comes across as slightly cringe-worthy, despite Best’s winning smile and apparent good nature. He says he’s a deeply religious man, and observes towards the book’s conclusion: “I’ve done a few things that God might not like in my time.” He says he is beginning to think about settling down, which might come as a relief to those who prefer to enjoy Best bowling fast in the daytime.Best’s career may have added up to 57 caps and 97 wickets for West Indies but his love for the game pours out, and he certainly left a mark – on Makhaya Ntini, who was struck by his pace as a net bowler on South Africa’s 2001 tour; on Flintoff, who provides the foreword to ; on Sachin Tendulkar, who faced Best in his final Test. Yorkshire fans will remember his lung-busting contributions, too, and there are affectionate mentions for his polar-opposites bowling partner, Steve Patterson, and former coach Martyn Moxon.Best’s philosophy is summed up when he discusses missing out on what would have been a remarkable Test hundred in 2012, when he was caught trying to damage the windows again:”I don’t play cricket for records. I enjoy the game and want to make people happy. I want to be spectacular. I want to be awesome… There’s a place for consolidating and working round: that’s cricket. But I am West Indian and I will be flamboyant. If I’m on ninety nine, I’ll try and hit a boundary to get to a hundred. It’s just how I think the game should be played.”Tino la Bertram Best wanted to be a great entertainer, and in many ways he succeeded. He should always be remembered for that.Mind the Windows: Tino Best – My Story

Women's IPL franchises to be unveiled on January 25

The BCCI has also shortlisted a pool of 10 cities across India from where the teams will operate

Nagraj Gollapudi12-Jan-2023The BCCI is likely to unveil the names of the five franchises that will contest the inaugural Women’s Indian Premier League (WIPL), and the cities they will operate from, on January 25.The financial bids of these franchises, currently submitted in sealed envelopes, will be opened on that day. However, the BCCI has pointed out in its tender document that it is “not obliged to accept the highest monetary offer” and will look for ways for the bidders to work towards enhancing the growth of women’s cricket in India.Last week, the BCCI released the tender inviting bids to own and operate the five franchises in the WIPL, which is likely to be held from March 5 to 23. In the Invitation to Tender (ITT) document, the summary of which has been seen by ESPNcricinfo, the BCCI has pointed out that a single bidder can contest for more than one city.Related

Ten cities on offer
The BCCI has shortlisted a pool of 10 cities and listed the venues, including their respective capacities, in the tender. The list includes Ahmedabad (Narendra Modi stadium, capacity 112,560), Kolkata (Eden Gardens, 65,000), Chennai (MA Chidambaram stadium, 50,000), Bangalore (M Chinnaswamy stadium, 42,000), Delhi (Arun Jaitley stadium, 55,000), Dharamsala (HPCA stadium, 20,900), Guwahati (Barsapara Stadium, 38,650), Indore (Holkar stadium, 26,900), Lucknow (AB Vajpayee Ekana cricket stadium, 48,800) and Mumbai (Wankhede / DY Patil / Brabourne Stadiums). While three venues have been listed for Mumbai, the BCCI has said one of three grounds will be utilised based on “availability and other factors.”The current plan to have a pool of 10 cities differs from the one the BCCI had originally submitted to the state associations at its annual general body meeting last year. Back then, the BCCI said it intended to either pick one city from each of the six zones across the country, or hold the tournament in a half-a-dozen cities without proper home bases for the five teams.Determining the highest bid
Barring Dharamsala, Guwahati and Indore, the remaining seven cities already serve as home bases for the men’s IPL teams. While the BCCI has set no base price, bidders have been asked to quote a price for 10 seasons. Bidders have been given the option of contesting more than one franchise/city, but the BCCI has said the successful bidder will only be given one franchise.”The stadium with the highest bid amount will be awarded first,” the BCCI said. “Thereafter, the stadium with the next highest bid amount will be awarded.”In case two of the highest bids for a single venue are equal, the BCCI has said there will be a re-bid. If the highest bids for two venues from two different bidders are the same, the BCCI will have the “discretion to decide the order.” In the case of a bidder raising the top bid for more than one ground, the BCCI has the liberty to decide the venue.A record sum of money was spent last year to bag the lucrative men’s IPL rights•BCCIFormat for first three seasons
Based on the information in the ITT, the first three seasons (2023-25) will each comprise 22 matches. In the league phase of the WIPL, each team will play the other twice (a total of 20 matches), and the table topper will progress straight to the final. The teams that finish second and third in the league will play an Eliminator to determine the second finalist. The BCCI has also said March will remain the window for the WIPL. From the 2026 season, the WIPL could comprise “33-34” matches but the BCCI has not fleshed out any detail on the tournament structure.Franchises to get 80% from central revenue pool
On January 16, the BCCI is scheduled to open the sealed bids for the WIPL media rights. While no base price has been set, the BCCI expects stiff competition on the back of the record sums spent last year to bag the lucrative men’s IPL rights. The media rights income is an integral part of the revenues both the BCCI and the franchises earn, as seen in the IPL. The BCCI has once again decided to stick to the same revenue-sharing formula it utilised in the IPL for distribution to franchises from the central revenue pool.”The BCCI shall pay the franchisee 80% of all Central Team Licensing Income every year,” a board said in the ITT. “BCCI shall pay the franchisees 80% share of Central Rights income in first five years, 60% in next five years and 50% post that.”

Lopetegui’s early reign has been one of real disappointment after the club spent over £120 million on new signings in the summer window, having won just five times over their opening 15 Premier League games.

There are also suggestions that Lopetegui has been clashing with key West Ham players behind-the-scenes, so it has been far from easy for the ex-Real Madrid and Spain boss, who is facing weekly speculation revolving around his position in the dugout.

Former FC Porto boss Sergio Conceicao has privately expressed a preference over joining West Ham above the likes of Everton and Wolves, and there are numerous other candidates who’ve been linked with the potentially vacant post.

One of them is former Chelsea and Brighton boss Graham Potter, who has been out of work since his sacking by the former mid-way through 2023.

Potter is one of the West Ham managerial favourites, as per reports in the last fortnight, with the former Ostersunds boss also open to taking the job on a short-term contract until the end of the season.

Karren Brady pushing Graham Potter for West Ham manager's job

That is according to reliable journalist Ben Jacobs, who also writes for TEAMtalk that Baroness Brady is pushing Potter for the West Ham manager’s job behind-closed-doors.

Jacobs claims there is still a very real possibility West Ham could sack Lopetegui over the next two weeks, depending on results, and Potter remains high on the shortlist alongside other names like Matthias Jaissle, Massimiliano Allegri, Edin Terzic and Conceicao.

Former Chelsea boss Graham Potter.

What could give Potter an advantage over fellow contenders is his willingness to take the role on a short-term interim basis, a condition both Terzic and Allegri aren’t too keen on.

The tactician has undergone a very different pathway to most other elite English managers – first gaining attention by leading Swedish minnows Ostersunds FK from the fourth tier to Europa League last 32 – but this shouldn’t be seen as a deal-breaker.

“I spoke to Graham last year,” said Wayne Rooney on Potter in 2022, via an interview with The Times. “I had a few hours with him on Zoom, and he went through his journey with me. He was good, interesting.

“You look at Graham, or Arsene Wenger who went to Asia. [Jose] Mourinho has been in different places. Fergie started with small clubs in Scotland. Patrick Vieira managed over here [at New York City FC] and went to France.

“Everyone has a different pathway but they all did what they did to educate themselves and better themselves. Sometimes as a manager you just take the job that’s there, and work your way from there.”

Head recalled for bowling ability, Matt Kuhnemann leapfrogs struggling Ashton Agar

Australia’s selectors have backflipped on their decision to leave out Travis Head in Nagpur by selecting him in Delhi because of his bowling ability. Matthew Kuhnemann has also leap-frogged Ashton Agar to make his Test debut as Australia select three specialist spinners and one fast bowler for the first time since 2017 with Cameron Green and Mitchell Starc both ruled unfit.Australia’s selector on tour Tony Dodemaide spoke to the media shortly before the toss in Delhi to explain the selectors’ decision-making. Having left Head out in Nagpur as a horses-for-courses selection due to his poor batting record on the subcontinent, and his struggles at the training camp in Bengaluru, Dodemaide explained that Head had been included in Delhi at the expense of Matt Renshaw because Australia felt they were missing a fifth bowling option in Nagpur.”Renners is really stiff,” Dodemaide said. “There’s no slight on him. He’s very much a valued player in our team planning moving forward. He was quite stiff, particularly in the first innings [in Nagpur]. So he hasn’t been dropped for those performances.”The key thing where we see the difference this time around is that Heady does offer quite a valuable option as a fifth bowler and that’s where we felt we were stretched in parts of the game in Nagpur and that fifth bowling option is something that we value, albeit another spinner. But we expect spin to dominate in any case.”

Ashton Agar struggling for form

Kuhnemann’s Test debut has come in extraordinary circumstances. Last week he was playing his first first-class match since October for Queensland at the MCG in Melbourne, having been biding his time as the second Queensland spinner behind Mitchell Swepson in their Sheffield Shield side.Kuhnemann was not selected in the initial India tour squad but flew into Delhi on Sunday as Swepson went home for the birth of his first child. Agar was picked as Australia’s second spinner in the XI in Sydney in the last home Test before the India tour and as the preferred left-arm orthodox spinner in the touring party. But Agar’s performance in Sydney against South Africa, and at the training camp in Bengaluru, meant that he was not a viable option to be picked in the first or second Test.”His red-ball game is not quite where he wants it to be,” Dodemaide said. “Matt Kuhnemann has come over and impressed. He got a chance in Sri Lanka, albeit in limited-overs form, he’s played well in domestic cricket this season and he’s impressed us in the nets. We just feel his style at the moment is more suited to these conditions.”Matthew Kuhnemann played 13 first-class matches before making his Test debut in Delhi•Getty Images

Kuhnemann made a similar shock ODI debut last year in Sri Lanka when Adam Zampa missed the tour on paternity leave.Australia have opted to not pick a second pace bowler for the first time since Chittagong in 2017 when Pat Cummins was the lone quick alongside Agar, Nathan Lyon and Steve O’Keefe, although on that occasion that did have Hilton Cartwright’s medium pace.Boland was arguably Australia’s second-best bowler in Nagpur behind Todd Murphy but only bowled 17 overs for the Test. Australia’s selectors believe the conditions in Delhi make a second quick surplus to requirements.”It’s a bit unusual going the three spin and one quick,” Dodemaide said. “We feel the pitch here, the conditions, we feel that spin will dominate the game once again and from what we understand this pitch has been used three times already this year and there’s already substantial cracking in the areas where most of the game is going to be played. That’s the reason for going for the three spinners. The fifth bowler is important too.”We don’t have the seam bowling option of Cam on the table quite yet. We’re very confident and hope he’s continuing to progress and we expect him to be available for the third Test in Indore. That’s the context around selection for this one.”

Cameron Green and Mitchell Starc hopeful for Indore

Dodemaide defended the selectors’ decision to bring three players on tour who are not fit enough to be selected in the first two Tests. Josh Hazlewood is still battling an Achilles issue while Green and Starc were pushing to be fit for the second Test but neither were quite right with their respective finger injuries despite training fully on Wednesday.”We brought them over in the expectation they’d be available,” Dodemaide said. “Starcy and Greeny didn’t quite come up for this one. We fully expect them to be online for the third one.”Certainly if [Starc] was 100% we would have had a serious conversation about the bowling structure, about two [quicks] and two [spinners] as opposed to one [quick] and three [spinners]. Certainly, it’s great balance if you’ve got that seam bowling without shortening the batting with Greeny being available. That’s not the case and we deal with what you’ve got.”Cam’s been going through his return to play stuff. He hasn’t really completed all of what he was intended to do. He still hasn’t faced quick bowlers. He hasn’t done a lot of catching as well. He’s trained for quite some time. But there’s just enough reaction and discomfort there that it’s just not ready.”

It has been a campaign to forget for the Saints on their return to the top flight after their relegation back into the Championship was confirmed following a 3-1 loss to Tottenham on Sunday. Juric's side became the earliest team to suffer the drop in Premier League history, and as a result, the head coach has been given his marching orders.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Juric was drafted in as a replacement for Russell Martin in December with the hope of steering the Saints to safety, but the 49-year-old has managed just one win since taking charge and has not been able to utilise his squad, which includes the likes of Aaron Ramsdale, Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Kyle Walker-Peters.

  • WHAT JURIC SAID

Speaking after relegation was confirmed, Juric reflected on the sensation, saying: "For me, this is something completely new, a new experience. I said to the players they have to be really thankful that they have fans like this.

"It is something incredible the way they love their team even though we were relegated. They really deserve much more. It’s another type of culture [to Italy]. They show love in this moment; it is a great thing in English culture, Southampton culture."

  • WHAT SOUTHAMPTON SAID

The Saints released a statement on Monday morning confirming Juric's departure. It said: "We can confirm that we have today reached an agreement with our Men’s First Team Manager, Ivan Juric, to end his spell at the club.

"Ivan came to Southampton at a tough time and was tasked with trying to improve a squad in a difficult situation. Unfortunately, we haven’t seen performances progress the way we had hoped, but we would like to thank Ivan and his staff for their honesty and hard work as they fought against the odds to try and keep us up.

"With relegation to the Championship now confirmed, we believe it is important to give fans, players and staff some clarity on the future as we head into a very important summer.

"The process of finding a new manager to lead us as we look to secure an immediate return to the Premier League has now begun and is being led by Group Technical Director Johannes Spors.

"We remain incredibly grateful for the ongoing support of our fans. Their continued dedication and passion, despite what has been a very tough season, is remarkable and is appreciated by everyone at the club.

"Despite the challenges that relegation will bring, our goal is to restore a sense of pride for them in their team and club once again."

Available for £0: Rangers face Boyd repeat over signing "unplayable" star

Glasgow Rangers have signed players for a second or even third spell at Ibrox throughout the years to varying degrees of success.

Kenny Miller returned to the Gers in the summer of 2008. Despite playing for Celtic a year prior, the striker scored 56 goals over the next two and a half seasons, helping the club win two domestic titles before leaving in January 2011.

Kenny Miller

Craig Moore spent a few years at Rangers during the nine-in-a-row era before moving to Crystal Palace in 1998. After a few unsuccessful months in England, the Australian centre-back returned to Ibrox and became a prominent member of the squad until he left in 2004, notching up plenty of trophies in the process.

Not every player who returns for a second spell enjoys this sort of success, however. A few players have joined Rangers in the past in an attempt to try and replicate their first spell, but it just didn’t work out as planned.

Names such as Kyle Lafferty, Mark Hateley and even the great Jim Baxter couldn’t repeat the magic which was prominent during their initial time at the club, but one of the worst returns of recent times was that of Kris Boyd in 2014…

Kris Boyd's second Rangers spell

Boyd was a machine during his first stint with the Gers between 2006 and 2010. He may not have been the hardest worker or most skilful player in the starting XI, but the moment the ball was played into the box, Walter Smith wanted just one player to get on the end of it – Boyd.

The Scottish striker was incredibly clinical upon moving from Kilmarnock, going on to score 128 goals which saw the Ibrox side return to prominence under Smith, with Boy winning six trophies.

Ahead of the 2014/15 season, the hitman returned to Glasgow hoping to replicate these feats as the club was looking to return to the top flight after a three-year absence.

Despite playing 43 times for Rangers during that campaign, Boyd managed to find the net just ten times as they failed to make it out of the second tier and the striker left to join Kilmarnock for a third time.

Kris Boyd

With the January transfer window now open, it appears a former crowd favourite has been linked with a return to the Light Blues this month.

If he does, it may well be a repeat of the Boyd disaster rather than a Miller or Barry Ferguson repeat…

Rangers facing Boyd repeat in January

Ryan Kent left Rangers in the summer of 2023 after his contract expired, going on to join Turkish side Fenerbahçe ahead of the following campaign.

Things didn’t go well for the winger on the continent, and he was eventually released by José Mourinho after making just 19 appearances in just over 12 months.

Former Rangers winger Ryan Kent.

Since October, he has been without a club and, naturally, the rumour mill has been in overdrive regarding a move back to Rangers, but it appears as though things have accelerated recently.

According to a report from Turkish outlet Kontraspor earlier this week, Kent has the offer of a six-month deal with an option of a one-year extension if things go well, in order to kickstart a career that has stalled since leaving Scotland in 2023.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

There is no doubt Clement requires some reinforcements ahead of the second half of the season, but is Kent really the answer? Especially considering the volume of talent who can play on the left wing at the club?

Ryan Kent’s Rangers statistics

If the Belgian signed the same player who shone during his first three seasons at Ibrox, then a return would surely be a priority for the club.

After signing on loan from Liverpool, the youngster registered 15 goal contributions which was enough to persuade Steve Gerrard to try and secure his signature permanently.

With just hours to go on transfer deadline day in 2019, Rangers got their man. The £7.5m fee was one of the highest the Gers had paid and over the next two seasons, it looked as though this could turn into a bargain.

21 goals and 18 assists were registered during that time, with the Light Blues winning the Premiership title in 2020/21 and Kent was even described as “unplayable” during the run to the Europa League final in 2022 by reporter Andrew Dickson.

His final season was a poor one, however, with Kent scoring just three times, and it was evident that his head lay elsewhere.

Why Rangers shouldn’t sign Ryan Kent

Yes, the winger would be available for free, but this doesn’t mean that Clement should be rushing to get a deal over the line. If anything, a move for Kent should be avoided, especially judging by his form since the summer of 2023.

During his maiden season in Turkey, the former Liverpool starlet only registered three goal contributions across 18 appearances in all competitions.

In the Turkish Süper Lig last term, the Englishman created only two big chances and averaged 0.6 key passes per game, while succeeding with only 0.9 dribble attempts per match.

When compared to his positional peers in the Europa Conference League during 2023/24, Kent fails to even rank in the top 50% for total shots (1.13), shot-creating actions (3.01), non-penalty goals (0) and touches in the attacking penalty area (2.44) per 90.

On this basis, does a move for Kent sound justifiable? With Nedim Bajrami, Ianis Hagi and even Hamza Igamane all being used on the left flank of late, he might not even make it into the starting XI.

Add to that Oscar Cortes and Rabbi Matondo returning from injury and this is a position which appears to be stacked with quality.

This is a potential move which the manager should be avoiding, as it could end up being a repeat of Boyd’s dismal second spell back at Ibrox.

Liverpool now want "astonishing" forward to replace Salah; Slot loves him

da pixbet: Liverpool now want to sign an “astonishing” £119k-p/w winger to replace Mohamed Salah, with Arne Slot believed to be a big fan, according to a report.

Salah's future in major doubt

da poker: Salah has repeatedly made it clear that he is unhappy Liverpool chiefs have been unable to match his contract demands so far, and it is starting to look increasingly likely the Egyptian could leave Anfield at the end of the season.

There have been widespread reports stating that a move to Saudi Arabia is now edging closer to completion, much to the discontent of Jurgen Klopp. The former Reds boss said: “I hope he stays.

“He’s the biggest striker Liverpool have had in modern times. Obviously there were other really good strikers. He’s a fantastic player, a fantastic human being, an outstanding athlete. The best ambassador your country could have. I hope he stays at Liverpool.”

With Salah’s future still up in the air, Slot has started to look at potential replacements for the summer, and reports from Spain have now detailed there is a new name on the shortlist.

The Reds are said to have been monitoring Real Madrid’s Brahim Diaz for months, given that Salah is likely to leave at the end of the campaign, but there will be competition for his signature from some of Europe’s top clubs.

Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund are also credited with an interest in Diaz, and the former’s strong relationship with Real Madrid could give them the edge in transfer negotiations.

Slot has reportedly identified the Morocco international as the perfect signing to replace Salah, given that he is a skilful and creative winger, and the report makes it clear the player himself could be interested in the move.

Diaz impressing in Serie A and La Liga

The “astonishing” Real Madrid forward has put in some impressive performances since establishing himself as a key first-team player for AC Milan in the 2020-21 season.

The £119k-per-week star’s attacking numbers may not be on the same level as Salah, but he has found starts hard to come by this season, given how stacked the Real Madrid attack is, particularly since the arrival of Kylian Mbappe.

When the former AC Milan man has been given the nod this season, he has put in some solid displays, scoring and completing two dribbles in the 4-2 victory against Sevilla in La Liga last month.

That said, Liverpool’s priority should be to agree a new contract with Salah, rather than finding a replacement, as it will be extremely difficult to find any player capable of matching the 32-year-old’s attacking numbers in the Premier League.
