PCB review could limit Babar's all-format influence

Split captaincy is a possibility with senior officials in the board’s new set-up indicating their willingness to “challenge the status quo”

Pakistan cricket is bracing itself for a wholesale review of its team structures, which could result in changes to the captaincy, after the end of a disappointing home season. Senior officials in the board’s new management set-up have indicated their willingness to signal to players and coaches that they will “challenge the status quo if necessary.” It has not been ruled out that such a challenge could split the Pakistan captaincy across formats, stripping Babar Azam of some of the influence he currently commands as an all-format captain. The current PCB administration, itself an interim arrangement, has appointed an interim selection committee, and Saqlain Mushtaq, the head coach of the national men’s side, is likely to leave after his contract ends in February. The board plans to carry out its review and make changes after the PSL ends in March. The Najam Sethi-led management took over from Ramiz Raja just three weeks ago and has been actively reviewing Pakistan’s recent performances and structures within the team since. One of their first moves was to disband the selection committee headed by Mohammad Wasim and bring in Shahid Afridi in his place to name the ODI squad for the ongoing series against New Zealand.Related

But the real stirring seems to be happening with the side itself. Sethi made Shan Masood vice-captain of the ODI side in the absence of Babar’s regular deputy Shadab Khan, who is out with a finger injury. It was a surprising recall for Masood, given that he last played an ODI in 2019 and hadn’t really been part of the conversation since. Haris Sohail was also recalled out of the blue, having not been in the side for a while, on the basis that he had been treated unfairly by previous selectors. But Masood’s sudden elevation as vice-captain has been read by some as a challenge to both him and Babar’s captaincy, and is believed to have caused unrest and resentment among the core of the national side, most of whom are loyal to Babar. On the eve of the the ODI series against New Zealand, Babar had sought to play down the vice-captaincy, saying the appointment doesn’t mean Masood would automatically make the XI, and sure enough, Masood hasn’t played the first two games. But, ESPNcricinfo understands Sethi has taken a direct interest in Shan’s inclusion in the XI, though Pakistan’s top four is fairly established currently.Masood’s appointment is an illustration of how this administration intends to shake up that status quo. Babar has the command of his team and he remains a high-performing batter, but the recently concluded Test home season – where Pakistan lost three of five Tests and won none – has cranked up scrutiny of his leadership. That this shake-up is happening in the one format which this side seems especially suited to and settled in – the 50-overs game – is ironic. And though questions have been raised about his captaincy in T20Is, Babar has just led Pakistan to the semi-final and final of two successive T20 World Cups, as well as the final of the Asia Cup.Shan Masood, who isn’t a regular in the ODI side, was made vice-captain in Shadab Khan’s absence•Cameron Spencer/Getty Images

Sethi has taken a personal interest in forming a new coaching set-up as well, and was planning to bring back former head coach Mickey Arthur. But Arthur’s long-term contract with Derbyshire meant he couldn’t take up a full-time head coach role with Pakistan and though both parties tried to forge a part-time consultancy role for him, the PCB said that proved “difficult to materialize for various reasons on both sides.”Sethi, however, is keen on having Arthur on side, advising him on cricket affairs. The suggestion to elevate Masood is understood to have come from an informal discussion between Sethi and Arthur, for example. Masood had a stint last summer with Derbyshire, under Arthur. He scored 1832 runs in all competitions but wasn’t able to transfer his form into Pakistan’s home season. Across six Test innings he averaged 20.33, with a highest score of 35.The new administration wants to return to the status quo as it was in 2018, when Sethi stepped down after former Pakistan captain Imran Khan was elected Prime Minister. Sethi has already dismantled the four-year-old domestic structure that came in in the wake of Imran’s election and taken it back to the one that was in place until 2018, marking the return of regional and departmental cricket. The PCB also brought back former women’s head coach Mark Coles on a one-year contact; his first stint had ended when he resigned citing family reasons in 2019.Last month, PCB patron-in-chief and Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif removed Ramiz and his board and replaced them with a 14-member management committee, led by Sethi. The committee has 120 days to change the PCB’s constitution, bringing back the 2014 version that was replaced in 2019.

Messi, who played a pivotal role in Argentina’s campaign, scored seven goals and provided three assists, featuring in every match from the group stage to the final. The South American nation secured their third World Cup title after an intense final against France, which was settled by a dramatic penalty shootout following a thrilling 3-3 draw.

During a discussion with former PSG winger Jerome Rothen on Evra did not hold back his thoughts on the 2022 tournament, stating: "Okay, we haven’t won anything since 2018, but we all know that in 2022, they gave the World Cup to Messi. It was all already written. Even the French wanted Messi to win it."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Following his World Cup success, Messi continued to make history, guiding Argentina to a second consecutive Copa America title. However, his performances in the 2024 edition in the United States hinted that the physical demands of top-level football over nearly two decades had begun to take a toll on the 36-year-old.

The Argentine Football Association (AFA) confirmed that Messi has been left out of the squad for the upcoming CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers against Brazil and Uruguay due to a low-grade adductor muscle injury. Ipswich wanted to sign "extraordinary" PL flop, they got Delap instead

It’s been an interesting start to the Premier League season for Ipswich Town this year.

Before a ball was kicked, fans and pundits alike were fearful that the club would be in for an extraordinarily tough campaign, as just two years ago, they were still fighting to get out of League One.

However, we are now ten games into the season, and the good news is that Kieran McKenna’s side have only been on the losing side five times, but the bad news is that they are still without their first win.

It’s too early to say with any certainty whether Ipswich will be able to beat the drop come May, but with young stars like Liam Delap in the side, anything is possible.

Moreover, the 21-year-old’s sensational form makes the club’s decision to sign him over another striker they were interested in this year look even better.

Liam Delap's form this season

Ipswich opted to hand Manchester City around £20m for Delap’s services in July and to say he’s proven to be an excellent signing in the months since would be an enormous understatement.

The Englishman has played in all ten league games for the Tractor Boys so far, and while he scored just once in his first five games, he now has five goals to his name.

This utterly brilliant form in front of goal means he currently has as many goals as far more established Premier League stars such as Ollie Watkins and Luis Diaz.

Moreover, with his brace against Aston Villa, which secured his side an unlikely point, he’s shown that big games are not an issue for him and that he does, in fact, have the mentality to make it at the highest level.

In all, signing Delap in the summer was a masterstroke from Ipswich, especially when they were supposedly interested in another striker who has looked entirely out of his depth in the top flight this season.

The failing striker Ipswich could've signed

Before Ipswich got their hands on Delap in July, they were linked to another striker who had just enjoyed a relatively successful six-month stint in the Premier League with Sheffield United: Ben Brereton Diaz.

Yes, following a disastrous switch to La Liga side Villarreal in the summer of 2023, which saw the Chile international fail to score a single goal in 20 appearances, he moved to the relegation-threatened Blades in January, where he proceeded to score six goals and provide one assist in 14 top-flight appearances.

Now, considering the “extraordinary” marksman, as dubbed by former manager Tony Mowbray, averaged a goal involvement every other game in the Premier League last season, the Blues’ interest in him made sense, but given how he’s played for Southampton so far this year, it’s safe to say they dodged a bullet.

Since his £7m move to St Mary’s, the former Blackburn Rovers star has failed to score a single goal for the club in eight appearances across the league and League Cup, and worse yet, the south coast side’s only win in the league so far this season came when he wasn’t in the squad.

Ultimately, the Stoke-on-Trent striker might still be a talented forward in a bad run of form, but as things stand, his transfer has to be considered a flop, and considering how well Delap has done at Portman Road, Ipswich undoubtedly made the correct decision over the summer.

Chicago’s Bulls had Michael Jordan lifting the standard and Jimmy Peirson says there’s two men doing the same for Queensland’s Bulls. The in-form wicketkeeper has also revealed the strategic shift designed to catapult team-mate Matt Renshaw back into a baggy green as he continues his own push for a Test debut.Peirson powered to a fifth first-class century in the last two years as the Bulls beat Tasmania by an innings and 172 runs on Saturday to open the Sheffield Shield season. His bright innings on the tricky, newly-laid Allan Border Field square followed an unbeaten 128 for Australia A in a successful chase of 367 in Sri Lanka in June. He scored 67 not out in the first innings of that game, only called into the squad as a late replacement. The state’s youngest-ever Sheffield Shield winning captain when Queensland won the competition in 2018, Peirson is enjoying the presence of Test pair Marnus Labuschagne and regular captain Usman Khawaja to begin their season.Related

“It’s great having Marnie [Labuschagne] around; you see the problem-solving that goes on while he’s batting, [it] is something I’ve learned from,” he said.Peirson reserved high praise for Test opener Khawaja and Australia’s No.3 Labuschagne, who scored 72 and 127 respectively in Brisbane last week.”It just sets good standards, you see how they go about their business and see that’s the level you need to be at to play Test cricket,” he said. “As team-mates we want to be rising to that level. I know when [Michael] Jordan played basketball he spoke about bringing guys along with him, and those guys do that for us.”While Peirson has been piling on the runs Alex Carey has been making the Test spot his own.”There’s a lot of keepers doing the job at the moment in Australia; all you can do is worry about your own backyard,” Peirson said of the fight for higher honours. “Kez [Carey] has done a really good job, especially in the subcontinent. He’s earned his position, but there’s no doubt everyone wants that position.”Peirson isn’t the only Queensland player pushing his case with former Test opener Renshaw and fast bowler Mark Steketee, who had a hat-trick ball dropped in the slips on Saturday, making claims.Khawaja had pushed long-term opener Renshaw into the middle order when the veteran forced his way back into the Test fold. Now cemented at the top of Australia’s order, Khawaja slid himself back down to No. 4 for Queensland’s season opener so Renshaw could face the new ball.”Matty has earned his way back up into the opening role with national selectors hopefully looking at him as a future opener for Australia,” Peirson said of the surprise move. “We’re fortunate [to have top-order depth] and Uz is at the point in his career where he scores runs wherever he bats.”

PSG planning to sell £50m+ star so they can buy Aston Villa hero in January

Paris Saint-Germain are willing to sell player they recently spent over £50 million on so they can sign an Aston Villa star instead come January, according to a recent report.

The Villans are currently in a tough patch, as they are winless in their last four games in all competitions and now face a tricky trip to Anfield to play Liverpool this weekend. Unai Emery will be keen to end this poor run of form and will be demanding more from his players.

In the last few transfer windows, Villa have been a very busy side, adding plenty of talent to their squad, and the same could happen again in January as they keep their watchful eye on players from England and across Europe.

Villa are keeping a close eye on the progress of Southampton’s Tyler Dibling and are leading the race to secure his signature at the end of the season, after he has put in some impressive displays in the Premier League.

Sporting Lisbon's Pedro Goncalves.

The Midlands side are also preparing an offer to sign Sporting CP winger Pedro Goncalves. The Villans had a representative in place for Sporting’s game against Manchester City in the Champions League to watch Goncalves, and they are now preparing to make a move in January.

But while Villa have their eye on adding to their squad in January or next summer, they may also have to deal with losing a player, as PSG circle with interest in one of their key performers.

PSG planning to sell £50m+ star to buy Aston Villa’s Jhon Duran

According to reports from Spain relayed by TEAMtalk, PSG are planning to sell Goncalo Ramos in order for them to sign Jhon Duran. Duran joined Villa in January of last year, but it is only recently that he has truly impressed.

Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran

After 10 top flight games in this campaign, he already has four goals to his name. The Colombia international has also bagged goals in the Champions League and EFL Cup this season, as he continues to shine particularly when he comes off the bench.

Duran’s performances for Villa have now caught the attention of big European teams, including PSG. The January transfer window is not far away, and the French side are looking to bring the 20-year-old to France, despite him just signing a new contract at Villa Park.

PSG are willing to let go of Ramos, who is valued at £54 million, a figure they paid to sign him from Benfica, to sign Duran. Villa will not want to lose the striker, and it was claimed last month that he has a price tag of £75 million on his head after his recent performances, but the player’s head may be turned by the chance to go from super-sub to main man.

E a batida do Corinthians seguiu.

ZANOCELO PERDE A CABEÇA E É EXPULSO

Aos 16 minutos do segundo tempo, o meia Vinicius Zanocelo, do Santos, acabou perdendo a cabeça e deixou o cotovelo no rosto do lateral Lucas Piton, do Corinthians.

MARCOS LEONARDO PERDE MELHOR CHANCE SANTISTA

CLIMA ESQUENTA NO FIM

Solskjaer wanted Man Utd to sign amazing star for £4m, now he’s worth £115m

Being the super club they are, Manchester United have been blessed with countless sensational footballers over the years.

The likes of Éric Cantona, Roy Keane, Rio Ferdinand, Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney have all graced the Theatre of Dreams in the last thirty years, and depending on who you ask, they could add another handful of names to that illustrious list.

However, like any club, the Red Devils have also signed their fair share of flops over the years, with perhaps the most extreme example in recent years being Donny van de Beek.

Moreover, what makes that signing even worse is that, just a few months later, the club were pushing to sign a future superstar but ultimately backed off, potentially believing they already had a player good enough in the Dutchman.

Van de Beek's United nightmare

In the summer of 2020, United agreed a £35m deal with Dutch giants Ajax for their incredibly impressive young midfielder Donny van de Beek, who just the summer prior had helped the Amsterdam side to a Champions League semi-final and had agreed personal terms for a move to Real Madrid.

Unfortunately for all involved, while it looked like a brilliant deal at the time, it now looks like one of the worst transfers the Red Devils have agreed to in recent history.

For example, in the four seasons he was contracted with the club, the Dutchman made just 62 appearances, scored two goals, provided two assists, went on two short-term loan moves, and spent a whopping 375 days sidelined with injury.

To top it all off, the 27-year-old was also earning £120k-per-week for most of his stay at the club and was sold for just £400k to Girona this summer, meaning it was a disastrous move on the pitch and the spreadsheets.

Overall, while United have signed worse footballers in the past, few transfers have worked out quite as poorly as Van de Beek’s did.

Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek.

This makes it all the more maddening that the club then passed on a youngster who could have been the perfect upgrade in the January after he signed.

United's pursuit of Moises Caicedo

Yes, the youngster who could have replaced Van de Beek in the team had United stuck to their guns and signed him back in January 2021 is Ecuadorian international Moises Caicedo, who completed his £115m move to Chelsea last summer, becoming the most expensive transfer in the competition’s history in the process.

Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo

However, before he joined the Blues and Brighton & Hove Albion, the Santo Domingo-born star was on the Red Devils’ radar and could have been another addition to the young and exciting squad Ole Gunnar Solskjær was trying to build at that time.

The Norwegian icon confirmed the club’s interest in the Chelsea midfielder in an interview with the Athletic last year, revealing that a fear of the youngster’s inexperience prevented the deal from proceeding.

However, a report from the Manchester Evening News at the time claimed that United pulled out of the deal due to too many intermediaries making the negotiations ‘messy,’ which could explain why Fabrizio Romano claimed the potential €5m – £4m – fee was not seen as a stumbling block in December 2020.

Ultimately, whether it was a concern about his perceived lack of experience or the involvement of too many hands in the deal, United decided against signing Caicedo for a minuscule fee in January 2021 and were left with Van de Beek as their shiny new midfielder that season, which has to go down as a massive transfer mistake.

Revealed: The £73k-per-week midfielder Arteta dreams of signing for Arsenal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta personally dreams of signing a “very creative” midfielder, with the Gunners set to be front of the queue for his services next year.

Players linked with moves to Arsenal in 2025

The north Londoners and sporting director Edu Gaspar are already making transfer plans for next year, despite being fresh out of the summer transfer window with £100 million spent on five new additions.

£136 million Brazil international could now be offered to Arsenal

The South American superstar would be quite a capture.

ByEmilio Galantini Sep 25, 2024

While the likes of Mikel Merino and Raheem Sterling arrived to contribute further forward, the bulk of Arsenal’s new signings were brought in to bolster Arteta’s defence, so the club could look to add more attacking flair in 2025.

After missing out on a deal for RB Leipzig star Benjamin Sesko, who Arsenal made an offer for alongside both Chelsea and Man United, Arteta chose to keep faith in makeshift option Kai Havertz to lead the line – as he attempts to end their 21-year wait for a Premier League title.

However, that isn’t to say they aren’t monitoring new centre-forward options for next year, with Inter Milan striker Marcus Thuram, Sesko and Sporting Lisbon star Viktor Gyokeres among the strikers linked with moves to Arsenal in 2025.

Arsenal also couldn’t agree a deal for Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia, despite agreeing terms with the Spaniard (Fabrizio Romano), but it is believed that Edu could go back in for Garcia – regardless of Neto’s arrival on summer deadline day.

There have even been rumours that Arsenal could be offered Real Madrid star Rodrygo in a swap deal for defender William Saliba, although the Gunners are highly unlikely to accept this as he is a crucial player for Arteta.

Mikel Arteta dreams of signing Florian Wirtz for Arsenal

According to The Boot Room, Arsenal’s manager has a real preference in mind when it comes to transfer targets – Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz.

Germany’s sensation played a pivotal role in Leverkusen’s run to the Bundesliga title last season, and is attracting interest from elite European sides as a result.

Arteta is obsessed with the idea of signing Wirtz for Arsenal, as per TBR, and it is believed they will be right at the very front of the queue for his signature next year with the 21-year-old expected to leave.

The £73,000-per-week attacking midfielder won’t come cheap, though, as he will command a price tag of around £125 million.

“Florian is just a huge asset for this team through his carefree nature,” said former Germany boss Hansi Flick. “He’s simply an outstanding technician, loves to play, is very creative, has a good shot, runs hard and is quick. He’s got a good total package.”

Several members of the starting XI were far from good enough to ensure Newcastle came away from London with all three points, including Kieran Trippier.

The right-back was making his second start – and first in the league – of the 2024/25 campaign, but his lack of match action clearly took its toll in what was a poor performance.

The Englishman failed to offer much going forward, making zero key passes, creating no big chances while not even completing a successful dribble attempt.

Defensively, Trippier won just three of his six attempted duels, lost possession seven times and was dribbled past twice during his time on the pitch.

He looks a shadow of his former self and this display will have affected his confidence, no doubt about that, having withdrawn in the closing stages for young Tino Livramento.

Despite this showing, Anthony Gordon arguably delivered an even worse display, especially considering how good he has been of late.

When on the ball, his passing was poor, completing just 16 of his 22 attempts, although he did make two key passes during the game. He did deliver four crosses into the opposition penalty area, but only two were accurate.

The 44-touch gem did look to take the Fulham defence on, attempting three dribbles, yet he managed to succeed just once, showing how poor he was in the final third.

Defensively, Gordon lost possession a staggering 16 times during the game, along with winning just four of his ten ground duels, as the Fulham players triumphed more often than not in their one-on-one battles with him.

The Chronicle’s Lee Ryder gave him a match rating of just 4/10, while stating that it was simply ‘not his day’ as he had ‘no joy on either flank’, before being replaced by summer signing William Osula late on.

Howe will be hoping this display, not only from Gordon, will be a one-off as they look to return to the European places by the end of the season.

'An appalling piece of umpiring'

Reactions to Stuart Broad’s decision to stand his ground against an appeal on the third day of the first Ashes Test

ESPNcricinfo staff13-Jul-2013″What Stuart Broad did amounts to the same thing as [Denesh] Ramdin. He knew he had hit the ball. The ICC fined Ramdin and suspended him for ‘actions that were contrary to the spirit of the game’. What Stuart Broad did is contrary to the spirit of the game. He played the ball and stayed there.”
“Don’t have a problem with Stuart Broad not walking its a decision which he will have to live with! #Ashes.”
“If you start banning players who don’t walk, Australia wouldn’t have a team”
So should a bowler call back the batter when he knows its a bad decision ? Of course not , I’m bored of this !
“Just saw the Broad dismissal … sorry non-dismissal. No issue with him not walking but an appalling piece of umpiring. Hard to fathom.”

“You can pinch the soap from a hotel without shame but you can’t rob the safe. There are many grades of grey in cricket’s spirit.”
“Once, professionalism explained walking: it was mutual respect between pros. Now, professionalism excuses not walking. Pathetic.”
“Australians have a reputation (other than Gilchrist) for not walking, not sure I’ve ever seen anything like that before with Broad’s edge!”

“I have no problem with batsmen not walking if there is 1% of doubt. But Broad 100% knew he was out, and cheated. Unacceptable.”
