Man Utd now plotting last-ditch hijack to sign "impressive" England int'l

In a move that would see them get one over on Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United are now reportedly plotting a last-ditch hijack to sign an England international this summer.

Full focus on Bilbao for Man Utd

Although there are still three Premier League games left to play, they are likely to be seen as opportunities to rest key players at Manchester United. The Red Devils’ domestic campaign has long been over and they could yet finish as low as 17th to increase their embarrassment to beyond simple failure. But, in quite the twist, they could still qualify for the Champions League.

Mason Mount

After smashing Athletic Bilbao 7-1 on aggregate, Manchester United will square off against fellow strugglers Tottenham in a game between two sides desperate to change the narrative of their seasons.

Like those at Old Trafford, there’s still every chance that Spurs finish as low as 17th in the Premier League. But, just like United, they could do the unthinkable by securing Champions League football through the Europa League.

Given just how much both sides have struggled this season, that qualification wouldn’t be without its controversy and many have already had their say, including Arsene Wenger.

The legendary ex-Arsenal manager recently told reporters: “No – they should qualify automatically for the Europa League again but not necessarily for the Champions League.

Same agent as Dorgu: Man Utd now offered chance to sign "incredible" winger

He’s a serial winner.

ByTom Cunningham May 10, 2025

“Especially when you’re in the Premier League where already five teams qualify. I think it’s something [for Uefa] to think about and to review. On the other hand, people will tell you that to keep the Europa League focused, interesting and motivated you need to give them that prize (of qualifying for the Champions League).”

However, if Manchester United end their season lifting the Europa League, the words of Wenger will simply become an afterthought, and their summer transfer window could suddenly come to life.

Man Utd plotting late Angel Gomes move

According to CaughtOffside, Manchester United are now plotting a last-ditch hijack to sign Angel Gomes ahead of Tottenham this summer. Squaring off both on and off the pitch, the two Premier League sides are chasing the England international as his LOSC Lille contract comes to an end and he becomes a free agent at the end of June.

Whilst it is reportedly Spurs who lead the race, Manchester United should hold the advantage that Gomes came through their academy not so long ago. Having left as an attacking midfielder in 2020, the 24-year-old has since reinvented himself as a No.6 in France and could now make quite the return to Old Trafford this summer.

Dubbed “always impressive” by analyst Ben Mattinson, Gomes looks set to have quite the decision to make between his boyhood club that let him go and a Premier League rival this summer.

He wants to sign for Madrid: Spurs facing Bale repeat with "monster" star

It’s set to be a vitally important summer for Tottenham Hotspur this year.

After a campaign that has been defined by an incredible number of injuries and the emergence of several incredible youngsters, Daniel Levy and Co have to make some big investments in the upcoming transfer window to ensure Ange Postecoglou, or whoever is in the hot seat, can take the club forward next season.

However, while sorting out the right incomings is going to be of paramount importance, it will be just as crucial to keep a hold of the team’s best players.

Ange Postecoglou and Daniel Levy.

Unfortunately, this could be a problem for the North Londoners, as recent reports have touted one of their stars with a move to Real Madrid, a move reminiscent of Gareth Bale’s in 2013.

Tottenham Transfer news

According to a recent report from Spain, Cristian Romero could be on his way to Real Madrid this summer.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The report has revealed that the Argentinian international has not hidden his interest in playing for the Spanish giants and that should they come in for him at the end of the season, he’d ‘be willing to take the step.’

The one piece of good news to come from the report is the claim that while Los Blancos like the player, he is only seen as one of a few options at the moment, although the fact his contract expires in two years makes a move for him more realistic than some of their other targets.

While Romero has been out of action for much of this season, his importance to Spurs cannot be underestimated, so losing him to Real would be a disaster, similar to the loss of Bale over a decade ago.

Why Romero's exit would be a Bale repeat

So, there are a couple of reasons why losing Romero this summer would be very reminiscent of Bale’s departure in 2013, with the most straightforward being that both players would have gone to Real Madrid.

The second similarity would be their respective importance to the North Londoners.

For example, in his final campaign for the Lilywhites, the Cardiff-born phenomenon was a force of nature, scoring 26 goals and providing ten assists in just 44 appearances, which came out to an average of a goal involvement every 1.22 games.

Now, it’s probably fair to say that the former Atalanta star does not have quite the same impact on the team as the Welsh icon did, but that doesn’t mean he’s not incredibly important, and if Lionel Messi thinks he’s “the best defender in the world,” he’s got to be up there with some of the best in the league.

For example, he’s one of the club’s co-vice captains, and across his 115 appearances for the team, he’s scored seven goals, provided one assist and averaged 1.69 points per game, which is an average significantly reduced by the limited appearances he’s made across this dismal campaign.

In fact, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that the team have struggled so dramatically in defence during the season he and Micky van de Ven have been out of action for significant amounts of time.

Finally, while Levy and Co would likely receive a sizable fee for the World Cup-winning “monster,” as dubbed by journalist Charlie Eccleshare, it seems unlikely that they’d be able to sign a defender as good as him and could end up wasting the money on several players as they did in 2013.

Ultimately, Romero is obviously not on the same level as Bale, but were he to leave Spurs for Real Madrid this summer, his move would certainly mirror the Welshman’s.

Sri Lanka survive Jaker Ali scare to seal thriller and go 1-0 up

The seeds for Sri Lanka’s victory were sown by their batters, Kusal Mendis, Sadeera Samarawickrama and Charith Asalanka

Mohammad Isam04-Mar-2024
It all came down to the last over in Sylhet. Chasing 207, Bangladesh needed 12, with the rampaging Jaker Ali at the non-striker’s end, but Dasun Shanaka nailed his lines and lengths to help Sri Lanka snatch a three-run win in the first T20I in Sylhet.By the time Jaker got on strike, Bangladesh needed ten from four balls. But Shanaka held his nerve to go full on off; Jaker looked to get under the ball but it took the bottom of the bat and stand-in captain Charith Asalanka, at long-off, judged a low catch to his left to perfection.Still, it was not done, as Bangladesh’s No. 10 Shoriful Islam slammed his first ball over extra cover, and took a leg-bye off the penultimate ball. That left Taskin Ahmed needing to hit a four to tie and six to win, but he could manage neither. The Sri Lanka fielders started celebrating as soon as Taskin toe-ended another wide, full ball from Shanaka, managing just a single. But the seeds for this win were sown much earlier, by Sri Lanka’s batters. They reached 206 for 3 despite missing Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Perera and their regular captain Wanindu Hasaranga, who is serving his suspension for an outburst against the umpires. In their absence, Kusal Mendis and Sadeera Samarawickrama struck brisk fifties and Asalanka teed off at the death to produce the most impactful knock of the night. He struck six sixes in his unbeaten 44 off 21 balls.

Bangladesh meek after Shoriful strikes first blow

The talk of putting past rivalries behind them lasted all of two balls. After Shoriful had Avishka Fernando caught behind, he mimicked Angelo Mathews’ celebration from the two sides’ World Cup match last year; after Shakib and Bangladesh had stirred controversy by appealing – successfully – to have Mathews timed out, Mathews had pointed to his wrist in turn after snagging Shakib in the chase.A familiar rap on the wrist? Taskin then removed Kamindu Mendis in the fifth over but he had already set the ball rolling with two sixes in his 14-ball 19. Kusal Mendis, who was quiet in the powerplay, properly got going in the 12th over when he struck Rishad Hossain for two consecutive sixes in an 18-run over. The second of those sixes got him to a 28-ball half-century.

Asalanka puts on a fiery show

Asalanka led that assault, belting six sixes. He struck Taskin over wide long-on before pasting him over deep square leg in the 17th over. He sliced Mustafizur Rahman over deep third, before hammering a similar shot off Shoriful for a six over cover-point. He struck a wayward Mustafizur for two sixes in the last over too, powerfully over point, and the last one over deep square leg again. Asalanka and Samarawickrama added 73 runs for the unbroken fourth-wicket stand in the last 5.2 overs.

Mathews exposes Bangladesh top order

Mathews got Sri Lanka two of their first three breakthroughs as the visitors dominated Bangladesh in the powerplay. Litton played an ill-advised shot – shuffling way outside off stump and then trying to flick to leg – to be caught behind in the first over. Soumya Sarkar skied Binura Fernando in the fourth over after making 12, before Mathews had Towhid Hridoy caught behind for 8. The in-form Hridoy had struck a superb six off his first ball but lasted only four balls more.Playing his first T20I since September 2022, Mahmudullah struck 54 off 31•Bangladesh Cricket Board

Mahmudullah leads recovery

Mahmudullah also started his innings with a six but unlike Hridoy, he kept up the pressure on the Sri Lanka bowlers. He cracked Mathews over extra cover first ball before slamming Dasun Shanaka in the seventh over to bring up Bangladesh’s fifty. Mahmudullah lost captain Najmul Hossain Shanto along the way, but found newcomer Jaker willing to rotate the strike. After Samarawickrama dropped Mahmudullah on 27, the veteran struck Matheesha Pathirana to the second tier of the eastern gallery. It turned out to be an 11-ball over from Pathirana who bowled big wides and a couple of no-balls. It went for 20 runs as Jaker struck his first six of the night too.

Jaker takes over from Mahmudullah

Avishka Fernando took a good catch at the long-on boundary to end Mahmudullah’s innings on 54 off 31 balls. That looked like the end of Bangladesh’s chase but Jaker chose this moment to hit a higher gear.In the same over as the wicket, he struck Maheesh Theekshana for a six over square leg before hammering Shanaka for two sixes to the leg side in the next over. He hit two more sixes in the next two overs, off Theekshana and Pathirana. The latter’s was another 11-ball over, which went for 19, as he struggled substantially with cramp. This over was so wayward wicketkeeper Kusal was even seen standing almost at second slip to receive the ball, as Pathirana attempted to send down wide yorkers.Jaker reached his maiden T20I fifty off 25 balls with a blast through the covers to end Pathirana’s over. Mahedi Hasan timed two fours off Binura Fernando, both through wide third in the 18th over, but he fell trying to hoick the same bowler. The sixth-wicket pair had added 65 runs in 4.3 overs but Mahedi left with Bangladesh still needing 27 off the last 2.1.

Jaker takes it deep, and almost finishes it off

Pathirana continued to be wayward in his last over, the penultimate of the innings. He conceded 15 runs including three fours, and bowled another no-ball. Jaker struck him through midwicket, fine leg and extra cover to leave Bangladesh needing 12 off the last over. It seemed then they might pull off an amazing heist, but it was not to be.

Rangers star's agent now confirms he will not play at Ibrox next season

da aviator aposta: The agent of one of Rangers’ key players has now said his client will play in a ‘big 5’ European league next season in a new update that will no doubt concern the club’s fanbase.

Ferguson praises Rangers players after Fenerbahçe win

da stake casino: Amid what has been a turbulent season at Ibrox, Rangers pulled off what was arguably their best result of the campaign on Thursday as they beat José Mourinho’s Fenerbahçe 3-1 in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 meeting.

Vaclav Cerny, on loan with the Gers from Wolfsburg, scored twice on the night, while Cyriel Dessers got the other goal for Barry Ferguson’s side. Dessers also had two goals disallowed for tight offside calls on an eventful evening for the Scottish side in Istanbul as they took a crucial advantage into the second leg.

Speaking after the game, Ferguson, who was appointed as Rangers’ interim manager following the sacking of Philippe Clement last month, praised his team’s togetherness.

“I thought to a man tonight, even the guys that came off the bench, you have to give them credit,” he said. “Even the boys on the bench kept supporting. It is important to me there is a real togetherness, and they certainly showed that on the pitch tonight.”

Ferguson has made 9/10 Rangers ace look like "the best player in the world"

Rangers put one foot in the Europa League quarter-finals by beating Fenerbahçe in İstanbul on Thursday night, with one player in particular starring.

ByBen Gray Mar 7, 2025

Cerny, meanwhile, was equally as delighted with the showing he and his teammates put on: “It was a massive win, but we know we are only halfway there. It was the perfect opening game for us in the tie and I think we deserved to win the game and now we want to close it next week.”

Cerny to return to Germany at the end of the season

Sadly for Rangers and their fans, it appears as if they may not have Cerny, who has scored 17 goals in all competitions this season, at Ibrox for too much longer. Speaking to the Czech media, as relayed by The Daily Record, Cerny’s agent, David Nehoda, has now revealed that the 27-year-old will probably return to Wolfsburg when the season is over.

“I can’t say what will happen next, but I don’t think it’s very realistic for him to stay at Rangers,” he said. “His contract at Wolfsburg ends in the summer of 2027, so I would assume that the club will want to recall him, or there will be interested parties who would like to buy him.”

Vaclav Cerny

Nehoda went on to say that he is aware of interest from both France and Italy already, and that both destinations would fit the winger’s own ambitions: “I know Vaclav’s ambitions — to return to one of the top five leagues in Europe.”

He’s now similar to a £100m star: Spurs must rue letting flop leave for £0

da 888casino: Over the last few years, Daniel Levy has received criticism from the Tottenham Hotspur supporters for his ownership of the club, with protests held ahead of games in recent weeks.

da bwin: The fanbase have been campaigning for change, wanting a new owner to take them forward and transform the side into a Premier League-winning outfit – understandable given the facilities in place in North London.

His lack of spending during his time at the helm has often come into question, with the recent injury crisis that has depleted Ange Postecoglou’s side evidence that more needs to be done to help the Aussie.

Tottenham Hotspur manager AngePostecogloucelebrates after the match

However, admiration needs to be handed Ange’s way in the manner he’s conducted himself through the situation, with the recent wins in the league evidence of what he’s capable of with a full quota.

Despite the protests around Levy’s future, the 63-year-old has spent big in certain situations, but it remains to be seen if his big-money additions are worth the fees paid.

Tottenham’s record signings under Daniel Levy

In the summer just gone, the Spurs owner forked out a club-record £65m for the signature of striker Dominic Solanke from Bournemouth, handing the manager the forward he craved after Harry Kane’s departure.

The Englishman has been missing since the middle of January with a knee injury, halting his progress in North London after his impressive start to life, registering 17 combined goals and assists in his first 29 matches.

Tottenham striker Dominic Solanke

The 27-year-old moved to the club after Richarlison failed to nail down the regular role at the top end of the pitch, scoring 18 times across the last three seasons with the Lilywhites.

He cost a whopping £50m from fellow top-flight outfit Everton, but the big-money fee spent hasn’t been worthwhile, undoubtedly going down as a miss for Levy.

However, the Brazilian isn’t the only player to fail to live up to his mammoth fee in North London, joining another player who only demonstrated his quality in glimpses.

The Spurs flop who’s now similar to a £100m talent

Back in the summer of 2019, Spurs spent big on midfielder Tanguy Ndombele from French side Lyon, costing £63m, a then-club record, before Solanke’s rival.

Tanguy Ndombele

After such a fee, there’s no denying that excitement built among the fanbase over his move, but unfortunately, the now 28-year-old was only able to showcase his skillset on a consistent basis.

He would feature a total of 91 times for the Lilywhites over a three-year period, spending two separate spells on loan at Napoli and Galatasaray before his contract was cut short – allowing him to depart on a free transfer last summer.

Whilst he produced some moments of magic, including his superb effort against Sheffield United, unfortunately, he was unable to produce such levels on a regular basis – leading to his departure with concerns around his attitude and fitness.

However, in the last few months since his departure, he’s moved back to France, joining Nice on a free transfer, recapturing his form which saw Spurs fork out such a hefty fee for his services.

Tottenham's Tanguy Ndombele

Such is the impressive nature of his performances, the “unbelievable” Ndombele, as dubbed by journalist Jack-Pitt Brooke, he’s been compared by FBref as a similar player to Newcastle’s Bruno Guimaraes – who previously had a £100m release clause in his deal.

When comparing his figures to the Brazilian in 2024/25, the Frenchman has matched or bettered the Magpies star in numerous key areas, highlighting how impressive he’s been since leaving North London.

It’s great to see a former first-team star after such a tricky period during his time as a player in North London – potentially needing more time to adapt to life in England.

South Africa name Wandile Gwavu as white-ball fielding coach

He joins the national men’s set-up after four seasons at the Johannesburg-based Lions team, where he won five titles

Firdose Moonda12-May-2023Three days after securing automatic qualification to the 2023 World Cup, South Africa are filling up their backroom staff ahead of the tournament. Wandile Gwavu has been named white-ball fielding coach and will work under Rob Walter, who was appointed earlier in the year, and alongside batting coach JP Duminy.A permanent bowling coach is yet to be identified after Rory Kleinveldt did the job in an interim capacity last summer.Gwavu joins the national men’s set-up after four seasons at the Johannesburg-based Lions team, where he won five titles. He has also worked with the Jozi Stars in the now defunct Mzansi Super League and with the Joburg Super Kings in the SA20. In addition, he been involved with South Africa’s Under-19 and A sides.”He brings a wealth of experience at the highest level in South African cricket with a coaching career that speaks volumes,” Enoch Nkwe, South Africa’s director of cricket said. “With the fine margins and the ever-increasing stakes in 50-over and T20 cricket, fielding has become a critical part of any successful team and we strongly believe Wandile’s expertise will help the Proteas maintain their strong tradition of fielding excellence across both formats.”Gwavu replaces Justin Ontong, who was part of Mark Boucher’s coaching staff and is understood to have applied for the vacant position at Paarl, where Duminy was head coach. Both Paarl and the Lions are now searching for new head coaches ahead of the 2023/24 season. Gwavu’s first assignment with the team will be the white-ball series against Australia which starts on August 30 and includes three T20Is and five ODIs.
