Deal could happen next month: Spurs eyeing move for Brennan Johnson 2.0

da fazobetai: The summer transfer window is just around the corner, and it's set to be a busy one for Tottenham Hotspur as they look to build on Ange Postecoglou's positive first season.

da betcris: Last year's window was dominated by the saga surrounding Harry Kane, and while that was far from pleasing for the Spurs faithful, they were able to get several talents through the door themselves.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou

The likes of James Maddison, Guglielmo Vicario and Brennan Johnson made a tangible impact on the team this season, and based on recent reports, Daniel Levy and Co could be about to repeat the trick that landed them the Welshman.

Tottenham Hotspur transfer news

According to a recent report from Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in Nottingham Forest's Callum Hudson-Odoi and could make an offer 'before 30 June.'

The report claims that the Lilywhites view the former Chelsea ace as someone possessing "huge" amounts of potential and that, due to the Tricky Trees' perilous financial situation, someone who could be signed this summer for a relatively modest fee.

Reports from earlier this month have claimed that the Englishman could be sold for around £30m, and while that's certainly not cheap, it isn't unreasonable for a player who reached double figures for goal involvements in all competitions this season.

Nottingham Forest player Callum Hudson-Odoi

It might not be a deal that goes down well with the fans to begin with, but the last time Levy and Co signed a player from Forest, it turned out reasonably well.

Spurs could repeat their Johnson trick

The last player that the Lilywhites signed from Forest was Johnson, who joined the club last summer for a fee of around £47.5m, and while some cast doubt at the time, it would be fair to say the Welshman enjoyed a good first season in N17.

Brennan Johnson for Tottenham

In his 35 first-team appearances, the 23-year-old winger scored five goals and provided ten assists, meaning he averaged a goal involvement every 2.3 games, which is pretty good going for a young player in a new team.

Moreover, as the Nottingham-born attacker only played 2504 minutes of action, he averaged a goal involvement every 166.9 minutes or every 1.85 90s.

In comparison, while Hudson-Odoi wasn't quite as productive, his return of eight goals and two assists in 34 games is still seriously impressive considering he's playing for a team that will generally be the underdog in most Premier League match-ups, and when broken down by minutes, the Englishman averaged a goal involvement every 218.9 minutes, or every 2.4 90s.

It's also worth remembering that this season was his first one without significant injuries disrupting his development, and lo and behold, he delivered, suggesting that the Lilywhites' assessment of his potential may well be accurate, provided he remains fit.

Lastly, while the "amazingly talented" Wandworth-born gem, as described by talent scout Jacek Kulig, hasn't had the best of times in recent years, he's still the player Bayern Munich were prepared to pay £70m to sign in 2020, so if Postecoglou can manage his injury problems properly, there is no reason why he couldn't coax him into the player so many used to think he'd become.

Ultimately, signing Hudson-Odoi is a gamble, but based on his performances this season, the reasonable fee and the sky-high potential so many used to believe he had, it's one worth taking, and the last player to make a move from the City Ground has worked out rather well.

Spurs keen on signing "special" £41m upgrade on Bentancur

The impressive talent could make the Lilywhites’ midfield far more dangerous next season.

ECB faces calls for inquiry into lack of non-white umpires

Board under scrutiny as former official John Holder claims of ‘years of racism’ in appointments

Former Test umpire John Holder is among those calling for an independent inquiry into the lack of non-white match officials in English cricket. While Holder enjoyed almost three decades as a professional umpire, he is concerned that no non-white umpires have been appointed to the first-class list since 1992. He also claims there has never been a non-white Pitch Liaison Officer, Cricket Liaison Officer, Match Referee, Umpires’ Mentor or Umpires’ Coach. In partnership with Ismail Dawood, the former county player whose career in umpiring stalled when he could not gain promotion, Holder is now accusing the ECB of “years of racism” and calling for an independent QC-led investigation and an investigation from the Equality and Human Rights Commission. While the pair have shared many of their concerns with ECB officials, they say they have “no faith in the ECB handling of complaints” and have a dossier containing “evidence of deliberate obstruction and interference” in the handling of those complaints.ESPNcricinfo understands that a senior member of the ECB’s staff was recently suspended following claims of racial discrimination in connection with this issue. It is believed the employee, who we have chosen not to name, was cleared of wrong-doing and is expected to return to work shortly.Vanburn Holder, who retired at the end of the 2010 season, was the last non-white umpire on the ECB’s first-class list. He was also the last appointed to that list in 1992. While numerous other non-white candidates have expressed an interest in the profession – including high-profile figures such as Devon Malcolm – none have progressed.”I’ve lived in England for 56 years,” John Holder told ESPNcricinfo. “And I can tell you, hand on heart, I have never experienced racism before. But when you look at these figures, when you understand what is going on, it is hard to reach any other conclusion.”When I stopped working for the ICC, I contacted the ECB to offer my services to mentor umpires. I didn’t even get a reply. Instead, ex-players, some of whom have never stood as umpires, were appointed to the role. That is ludicrous. It’s like employing someone who can’t drive to be a driving instructor.”I’d have had no chance if I was looking to start a career as an umpire today. If Devon Malcolm, who is not only a fine cricketer but an exceptional man, cannot progress, what chance would I have had?”My suspicion is that there has been a definite policy of only employing whites for this position. There needs to be a transparent policy related to selecting, training and mentoring umpires, which presently does not exist.”Dawood, meanwhile, was described as a “sound, technical umpire” in his performance appraisal but was told that consideration also had to “made about who best fits in”. Dawood’s final year on the ECB’s reserve list was 2014.ALSO READ: What has English cricket been like for black players?”The glass ceiling is incredibly low for BAME individuals, with systematic racism at the heart,” Dawood says in a statement to be released shortly. “I feel I have encountered racial discrimination, dishonesty and misinformation, cronyism, bullying, all which is deep rooted in the organisation. It was an isolating place for a person from a BAME background.”The language I have heard over the years has been horrendous, words such as P**is, C**ns, N***ers featured from individuals attached to the ECB. Some of this language was used in front of Senior ECB managers, which I found extremely disturbing. Having worked in different progressive sectors to cricket, I feel the ECB is the last colonial outpost. It is archaic and any change is mere marketing rhetoric.”While unaware of being named in the statement, Malcolm supported the call for an independent inquiry.”It’s true that I did express an interest in umpiring,” Malcolm told ESPNcricinfo. “I love cricket and I love watching cricket. I did a bit of umpiring and it turned out I was pretty good.”But I was basically told ‘I wouldn’t bother if I was you’. It was quite a knock-back at the time. I felt there was no chance. A few years later, I had another go and I passed my Level One exams. But if my initial enquiry had met with a more positive response, I’d be well on my way by now.”We all know the lack of black players and coaches needs to be addressed. So yes, I’d support the calls for an enquiry. But it really would have to be independent.”The ECB, having been sent a draft of this piece, responded to ESPNcricinfo with a statement. It read: “Today’s group of professional umpires don’t reflect the diverse ECB we are determined to be. We want to see more BAME representation among our officials, and recognise we still have a long way to go as a game to achieve this.”Earlier this year we commissioned a full independent employment investigation into allegations made against an individual, and while these were not upheld, the investigation did identify areas where we need to be better and do more to be inclusive and diverse.”The ECB has now commissioned a review, with Board oversight, to look at how we can reform our approach to managing Match Officials. This will set out actions as to how we can improve our systems and processes to increase the diversity of umpiring, inspire the next generation of umpires and match referees, have a world class umpiring programme and ensure a culture of inclusivity and fairness throughout the umpiring system.”

Arsenal officials hold internal talks over re-signing £199,000-a-week ace

Edu tipped for record summer spend at Arsenal this year

Arsenal now appear favourites to sign £60 million striker after agent talks

He’s been praised for having “everything”.

ByEmilio Galantini May 14, 2024

Indeed, Arsenal could be set for a record spend this summer, coming after they splashed over £208 million on new recruits in 2023.

Rumours suggest Edu is targeting a new striker, goalkeeper, defender and midfielder for Arsenal, but certain players will have to make way if the club are going to invest heavily in Mikel Arteta's squad for the second year running.

Many senior members of the Arsenal team could leave, starting with their academy graduates. Edu could sell Eddie Nketiah, Reiss Nelson and Emile Smith Rowe to fund a move for Newcastle star Bruno Guimaraes, who will soon command a £100 million release clause in his Magpies contract.

Elsewhere, Arsenal are willing to sell both Gabriel Jesus and Thomas Partey, with the high-earning duo thought to be attracting serious interest from Saudi Arabia. There is also the matter of sorting out Aaron Ramsdale's future in north London.

The England international has lost his place between the sticks to David Raya, and has been regularly linked with a move away from Hale End over the last fortnight as we approach the summer window's opening.

Ramsdale would be a potential coup for any side interested in bringing in a new shot-stopper. The 25-year-old is still young with many years still ahead of him, and the former Bournemouth ace already possesses bags of experience playing at the very top level.

Interestingly, Arsenal have been linked with re-signing a former star of theirs to replace Ramsdale – £199,000-per-week Juventus keeper Wojciech Szczesny. The Pole has won 10 major trophies across his career, and he could feasibly help Arsenal win more if he were to make the move back to England.

Arsenal hold internal Szczesny talks as they eye Ramsdale replacement

Fabrizio Romano has backed that Arteta will "100%" sign a new goalkeeper this summer, and now journalist Dean Jones has told GiveMeSport that Arsenal chiefs have held internal talks over a deal for Szczesny.

"It’s true that Arsenal have shown an interest in signing Wojciech Szczesny," said Jones.

"But it is hard to know if there is genuine scope for it to progress at the moment.

"They are on the lookout for a new back-up goalkeeper because Aaron Ramsdale is going to leave after this season, and Szczesny – with his experience and ties to the club – is a really good option to consider. That is why they have had initial conversations about whether it could open up.

"He is definitely not the only option for them though. I have heard of at least two other goalkeepers recently that Arsenal have sounded out about next season."

Babar Azam: 'I count myself very lucky' to lead Pakistan at home

He will captain Pakistan in ODIs for the first time during the home series against Zimbabwe

Babar Azam has experienced plenty in what is still a fledgeling career, but there’s a milestone he is eagerly waiting for when Zimbabwe visit Pakistan later this month for a limited-overs tour. Despite being appointed captain of the limited-overs sides over a year ago, Azam is yet to lead his Pakistan in ODIs.Plenty has changed since Sarfaraz Ahmed captained Pakistan to a 2-0 ODI series win over Sri Lanka in Karachi in October last year. Ahmed himself is no longer the Pakistan captain and no longer a first-choice member of the playing XI in any format. Pakistan have notched up home Test wins against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, lost the No. 1 spot in the T20I rankings and completed a three-Test and three-T20I tour of England. A pandemic has meant all international plans have been thrown into disarray, and the ICC World Cricket Super League has begun, with Pakistan’s series against Zimbabwe being the home side’s first involvement in the qualification league for the next ODI World Cup.But in all this time, Pakistan are yet to play a single ODI match, the Zimbabwe series Azam’s first leadership stint in the 50-over format.”It’s a great honour for me to be able to captain Pakistan in ODI cricket,” Azam told the PCB’s in-house media channel. “There’s been no cricket in Pakistan for a decade, and our players were forced to play abroad. So I count myself very lucky.”The ICC league gives every series context, with seven qualifying berths up for grabs. So we want to put as many points on the board as possible so when we get to the World Cup, people talk about us seriously. In 2011, we qualified for the semi-finals and in 2019, we couldn’t get through. I don’t think the rankings matter but I want us to start well and I fully trust my team to perform well and qualify.”The ODIs will be played at Rawalpindi Stadium, the first time limited-overs cricket will take place outside the PCB’s established centres, Lahore and Karachi since before the Sri Lankan team terror attack in 2009. The main attraction behind the idea of playing limited-overs cricket at smaller venues across Pakistan was to pack in full houses whose support, meaning home support would be keenly felt out in the middle. The ODIs might have returned to Pindi Stadium, but instead of packed crowds, there will be empty stadiums as a precautionary measure against the Covid-19 pandemic. Azam acknowledged this wouldn’t be ideal and the side will miss the crowd support.”The crowd has always supported us, and we got so much love from them when cricket recently began to come back to Pakistan. Unfortunately, Covid-19 means the crowd isn’t allowed. We’ll definitely miss them because you always get a boost from the crowd. We got a lot of support during the National T20 Cup, and we hope to get the same during the Zimbabwe series.”

Arsenal hold internal talks over signing trophy-laden £199,000-a-week ace

The Gunners are looking to shore up a key department.

ByEmilio Galantini May 14, 2024

Tottenham ultimately failed to do Arteta any favours on Tuesday evening, as they fell to a 2-0 defeat at home to Man City, who now have one hand on their potential fourth consecutive domestic crown.

Arsenal supporters will still be ruing that spurned Son Heung-min opportunity when the South Korea star was one-v-one against Stefan Ortega, but they're still very much on City's heels heading into the final day, and now turn to David Moyes' swansong in search of a favour.

The nature of the Premier League means you cannot rule out a last second twist, as Arsenal pray that West Ham can do the business at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Havertz is set for another key Arsenal role on the same afternoon, as the Gunners must also dispatch Everton. The German, despite early-season criticism, has really come into his own as he stars in a makeshift forward role, but will face a stern test against an improved Sean Dyche side.

Over 2023/2024, the former Bayer Leverkusen sensation has racked up 12 goals and seven assists for Arteta's side in the top flight alone, standing out as their joint-second top scorer.

However, despite Havertz's success, it is still believed that sporting director Edu is aiming to sign a classic, goalscoring number nine this summer. Arsenal are apparently set to bring in an "important" new striker, and they've been repeatedly backed to do so over the last 12 months.

Many interesting names have been linked in the last two weeks alone, and one of the most consistently mentioned frontmen is £60 million Bologna star Joshua Zirkzee. Reports in the last few days have also claimed that Arsenal appear favourites over Man United to sign Zirkzee as things stand, with Tribal Football now sharing an update of their own.

Arsenal could sign two strikers as Arteta personally eyes Zirkzee

According to their information, Arteta is a great admirer of Zirkzee and Arsenal could even sign two new strikers. Both Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah look likely to depart the Emirates Stadium, meaning Edu may have to replace both of them. Alongside Zirkzee, it is believed Arsenal are doing work on other names.

They're monitoring both RB Leipzig ace Benjamin Sesko and remain interested in Brentford star Ivan Toney, while Aston Villa forward Ollie Watkins is a far more complex option. However, it appears a move for Zirkzee may well have the most legs right now.

"Joshua is Joshua, he’s special," said Bologna boss Thiago Motta. "I hope he continues like this and I won’t compare him to anyone. He plays well but above all he works, I will never stop saying that from the first day of training camp, he has always been the first to work and has become a leader. He must continue like this and we must help him continue like this because this is on the right path.”

Chennai Super Kings look to make it two-in-two against depleted Rajasthan Royals

Steven Smith has recovered for the Royals, while Ruturaj Gaikwad is back in training for the Super Kings

Shashank Kishore21-Sep-20207:24

Do Chennai Super Kings need to rethink their opening combination?

Big pictureOver the years, Rajasthan Royals have had to force-fit overseas players into their XIs at the back end of the competition because of the unavailability of their first-choice picks. This season, they have to do that from the start.Jos Buttler has arrived in the UAE with family and is undergoing extended quarantine. This rules him out of Tuesday’s fixture in Sharjah. Ben Stokes is still with family in New Zealand. The Royals therefore have two gaps to plug. One of those – the opening slot – might be plugged by Yashasvi Jaiswal, the Mumbai teenager with a burgeoning reputation already in domestic cricket, and Robin Uthappa, one of their big buys at the auction.ALSO SEE: RR vs CSK live score 22nd September 2020Who comes in to replace Stokes? It appears as if Tom Curran might be the chosen one. He has had plenty of match time, in the England-Australia limited-overs series. He was a standout performer for the Sydney Sixers in their BBL 2019 victory, finishing the tournament as the third-highest wicket-taker (22 strikes in 14 matches). Then, there’s David Miller, who could make his franchise debut after nine seasons with Kings XI Punjab. For the Super Kings, given they are playing in Sharjah, traditionally a high-scoring venue with small boundaries, MS Dhoni could look for some bowling insurance by fielding a sixth option. One way of doing this could be by bringing in Shardul Thakur for M Vijay, who had a forgettable opening game. The rest of the batting can then move up a slot, with Sam Curran and Ravindra Jadeja as the floaters to keep-up the left-right combination should they want that.In the news Ruturaj Gaikwad has rejoined the Super Kings bubble after testing negative for Covid-19. The team management believes he could fill the void left by Suresh Raina’s exit, but he’s only had one full training session yet. So it could be a while before he’s eligible for selection.Faf du Plessis and Ambati Rayudu played lead roles in Chennai Super Kings’ opening-day win•BCCI

Steven Smith is fit and ready to go. He has cleared the necessary tests and has even started training with the team after a concussion scare in the UK earlier this month.Jos Buttler comes into IPL 2020 with tremendous form behind him•BCCI

Likely XIs Chennai Super Kings: 1 Shane Watson, 2 M Vijay, 3 Faf du Plessis, 4 Ambati Rayudu, 5 MS Dhoni (capt, wk), 6 Kedar Jadhav, 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Sam Curran, 9 Piyush Chawla, 10 Deepak Chahar, 11 Lungi Ngidi Rajasthan Royals: 1 Robin Uthappa (wk), 2 Yashasvi Jaiswal, 3 Sanju Samson, 4 Steven Smith (capt), 5 David Miller, 6 Riyan Parag, 7 Shreyas Gopal, 8 Jofra Archer, 9 Jaydev Unadkat, 10 Varun Aaron, 11 Tom CurranStrategy punt Barring Buttler, none of the other Royals batsmen had a strike rate of over 120 against spin last season. With him not playing the opener, things might have to be shaken up a little. In 2014, when the first 20 matches of the season were held in the UAE, Miller had the third-highest strike rate and the fourth-best average among those making more than 100 runs in that period. For far too long, Miller has been used as a finisher. Can he prove to be the X-factor player up the order? Jofra Archer has the third-best economy among all bowlers to have bowled at least 15 overs at the death. Given that the Royals had the poorest death overs economy of 11.3 last season, it makes sense to use Archer at the back-end. However, it wouldn’t be too bad an option to bring him in the middle, especially to hustle Ambati Rayudu with short balls. Archer has dismissed Rayudu twice and Watson once, with neither being able to score freely against his hit-the-deck bowling. MS Dhoni would do well to bring his spinners on immediately against Smith. Ravindra Jadeja has dismissed him six times in T20s.Stats that matter Since their return to the IPL in 2018, the Super Kings have won three out of their four outings against the Royals. Since 2018, the team chasing has won 26 T20s out of the 46 played in Sharjah. Pacers have picked up 64% of wickets in T20s here since 2018. Since 2018, the average score here is 161, while the average winning score shoots up to 175
