Cameron Green is glad he had back surgery and hopes it is the last of his career as he prepares for his playing return in county cricket, adding that he would be happy to bat anywhere for Australia as he pushes to be selected for the World Test Championship final as a batter only.Green held his first press conference since undergoing major back surgery last October, speaking in Perth as part of Cricket Australia’s nation-wide fixture announcement for the 2025-26 summer.Green, 25, is set to make his playing return for Gloucestershire when he heads to England next week. But he revealed that he would have been fit for the Sheffield Shield final had Western Australia qualified.Related

“The surgery has been incredible,” Green said. “I think I was probably off [my] legs for about two weeks. And after that I’ve been doing gym work for the last four or five months, been running for the last two months, been batting for the last month. It’s been pretty seamless. So, yeah, pretty happy I got it done.”It’s for the long-term goal of playing cricket for as long as I can. Bowling for as long as I can. I got it for that reason, solely. Obviously I could have healed [the stress fracture] over nine months, but I took the option to get the surgery, and hopefully, fingers crossed, that’s the last of it, which would be nice.”Green has taken a lot of confidence from speaking to Jason Behrendorff and Ben Dwarshuis, who have both had no major back issues since undergoing the same surgery. Green confirmed he has yet to bowl and won’t be fit to bowl in a game until the start of the next Shield season in October. He heads to Gloucestershire for a five-game stint in a bid to be selected for the WTC final against South Africa. He was Australia’s No. 4 when he last played in March 2024, scoring a match-winning 174 not out in his second last Test against New Zealand. But Steven Smith’s prolific return to that position means Green will have to bat somewhere else if selected. His inability to bowl until later in the year creates a selection headache given Travis Head is set to return to No. 5 while Josh Inglis and Beau Webster performed superbly in the middle-order across Australia’s last three Tests. It could be that Green finds himself in the top three.”I think we’ve got an ultra-successful top five, six, seven, so it’s never easy,” Green said. “But that’s where you want it to be in a Test team. You want someone to basically rise to the challenge, take that position for themselves and that’s what’s been done.Nathan Lyon speaks to the media•Getty Images

“They’ve had another ultra-successful summer, and I was so happy watching. But at the same time, you always want to get back into the team. So we’ll wait and see what happens.”Meanwhile, Nathan Lyon has revealed the extent of the hip injury he managed throughout the season since the opening Test against India in Perth.Lyon ripped tissue off the fascia in his left hip and as he continued to play through the pain he needed to have it twice drained of fluid. The injury ruled him out of the closing stages of the Sheffield Shield – although Lyon said he would have played the final if New South Wales had made it – and since returning from Sri Lanka he has be going through rehab to ensure he is back to full fitness for the WTC final.”I’ve been doing a fair amount of rehab, five days a week” he said. [It was] pretty painful when you land on it, but also when you run, it fills up with fluid and all that stuff. But all well and good now. So touch wood, it’s all good.”The other bowler nursing a post-season injury is Scott Boland who missed the final round of the Sheffield Shield with knee soreness. He has been managing an issue in his left knee over the past year.Boland played back-to-back Shield games for Victoria after returning from the tour of Sri Lanka where he did feature. But after taking 10 wickets against New South Wales in 36 overs, he bowled 43 against South Australia at the Junction Oval and pulled up soreCameron Green at the launch of Cricket Australia’s 2025-26 schedule•Getty Images

“It got progressively sorer as the summer went on, I think just through bowling,” Boland said. “I bowled a fair bit in those last couple of games. But I think if we made the Shield final, I would have been fine to play. So we sort of took the conservative route there and then I’ve got the next month to really build up my strength in my whole body.”Boland will carefully build up his bowling loads over the long lead-in the WTC final where it could be fighting with Josh Hazlewood for the final pace-bowling slot. He will have an outdoor net available to him at the Junction Oval despite some likely inclement April weather and will also head to Brisbane with the players who are not overseas at the IPL or the county championship for a couple of camps.Boland’s preparation will look identical to 2023 when he was Australia’s best bowler in the final against India at the Oval.”I think it’s just working out what’s working and what doesn’t,” Boland said. “I’ve only had this knee injury for eight to 10 months. I think we’re going about it the right way. I’ll have a little break now.”But once I do get up and going, I’m hoping to just go really smoothly and if everything goes well, I’ll be right to go for that one Test in England and those three Tests the Caribbean. And then after that, have another break again, and then sort of built my strengths and bowling loads again before the huge summer cricket next year.”

Better deal than Wilson: West Ham reach verbal agreement for £9m "warrior"

da premier bet: After a generally positive Premier League Summer Series campaign, can West Ham United start to build some positivity ahead of the new season?

da casino: On Sunday, goals from Niclas Füllkrug and Jarrod Bowen saw the Hammers beat Bournemouth 2-0 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.

Four days earlier, Graham Potter’s team had also defeated Everton 2-1 in Chicago, thereby finishing second in the Summer Series standings, below only Manchester United, who they’d narrowly lost 2-1 against in their US-tour opener in East Rutherford.

After being appointed in January, Potter won only five of 19 matches in charge, thereby picking up fewer points-per-game than his sacked predecessor, Julen Lopetegui, so will come into this new campaign under serious scrutiny.

If the Irons are going to get back to challenging for European qualification, they still require a few more signings, so could one be about to arrive?

West Ham United's transfer search

Following the release of veteran Łukasz Fabiański, West Ham have been in the market for a new goalkeeper throughout the summer, seeking to upgrade Alphonse Areola, following the Frenchman’s underwhelming campaign.

The Hammers have been interested in Mads Hermansen of Leicester City, Viktor Johansson of Stoke City and Sheffield United’s Michael Cooper, but have seemingly settled on their number one target to become number one.

That’s because, as reported by Fabrizio Romano, West Ham are “in advanced talks” with Botafogo to sign their shot-stopper John Victor.

Romano adds elsewhere that the Hammers are now “advancing to key stages” of the deal, and that John “wants the move”, subsequently stating that they have reached a “verbal agreement”. He will cost around £9m.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Botafogo, for their part, “have reached an agreement” to sign Neto from Bournemouth, as reported by David Ornstein of The Athletic, thereby securing a replacement, suggesting further that John is set to swap Rio de Janeiro for East London.

How John Victor will improve West Ham

As already outlined, goalkeeper is certainly a position of need at West Ham, and the table below documents why.

As the table outlines, it was actually the now-departed Fabiański who largely boasted better numbers in the Premier League last season, most notably when it comes to save percentage and xG prevented, but neither he nor Areola covered themselves in glory.

Thus, John will surely arrive to be the starter and, assuming the deal is done in time, meaning the Brazilian will be donning the gloves at the Stadium of Light against Sunderland on the opening day of the season.

The 29-year-old joined Botafogo from Santos in January 2024 and picked a good time to move to the Engenhão, a key figure as Fogo won their first Brasileirão title since 1995, as well as their first-ever Copa Libertadores trophy, with John the number one throughout the campaign.

He then captured global attention during the Club World Cup earlier this summer, starting all four matches as his team reached the knockout stages, most notably defeating European champions Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 at the Rose Bowl.

These statistics at a high-level competition are certainly encouraging, hence why teammate Philipe Sampaio, who is a centre-back, described his goalkeeper as a “warrior”.

Meantime, Matt Pyzdrowski of the Athletic was certainly impressed, first praising the ‘quality of his distribution’ and ‘technical ability’ in terms of in possession with the ball at his feet.

Furthermore, they go onto comment that John ‘makes full use of his physical presence’ as well as the fact that the 29 year old is a ‘high-level performer’ when it comes to shot-stopping, concluding that he would be a ‘smart’ and affordable addition for whichever European club are able to get their hands on him.

So why will he prove to be a better signing than future teammate Callum Wilson?

Well, while the England international’s quality has never been in doubt, he can never be fully relied upon when it comes to fitness and availability, seeing just 458 minutes of action for Newcastle last season due to a back and then hamstring injury.

Callum Wilson applauds the Newcastle fans.

On top of this, Wilson is not a guaranteed starter, especially after Füllkrug and club captain Bowen linked up very nicely as a front two during the pre-season friendlies out in America. Despite the bonus of arriving on a free, the 33-year-old’s record of just 11 goals in all competitions across the last two seasons is hardly the most encouraging.

Thus, while Wilson could still prove to be a shrewd addition, fitness-permitting John could turn out to be a transformational signing, not only as a result of his own quality, but given that he will be filling a position of genuine need.

Better than Wilson: West Ham agree personal terms with "unreal" £35m star

After Callum Wilson was unveiled as West Ham United’s new striker on Saturday, the Irons have now agreed personal terms to sign an “unreal” £35m star.

LSG, GT gear up for a top-heavy battle in Lucknow

The performance of new-ball bowlers could have a big say in which direction this game goes

Ekanth11-Apr-20252:04

Battle of the two best top orders?

Big picture: a top-order collisionTwenty five games into IPL 2025, the top four run-scorers are from Gujarat Titans (GT) and Lucknow Super Giants’ (LSG) top order. If that wasn’t unexpected enough, Shubman Gill isn’t on that list. It has allowed both teams to work around vulnerabilities in their batting. In a season where teams are looking to maximise their scoring throughout the innings despite the situation, GT follow an old-school T20 template. B Sai Sudharsan, who was the player of the match for his 82 in GT’s win over Rajasthan Royals (RR), said, “we try and keep a lot of wickets in hand and go full-on in the last five overs.”Their middle order has remained unburdened as at least one of Gill, Sai Sudharsan or Jos Buttler have scored a fifty in each of their five games so far. Not that that’s made them formulaic. In fact, after the last game GT’s assistant coach Parthiv Patel said, “there are no specific roles as such. As a team, we have a top three, but we keep shuffling the batting order. We react based on conditions and the situation.”Related

That flexibility was on demonstrated by Washington Sundar being promoted to No. 4 in their win against Sunrisers Hyderabad – he made 49 off 29 balls – but then he was replaced with Shahrukh Khan, whose 20-ball 36 built on a well-set platform against RR.For LSG, the chance pairing of Aiden Markram and Mitchell Marsh clicking has bolstered the impact of Nicholas Pooran’s onslaughts and nullified Rishabh Pant’s lack of runs.Form guideLucknow Super Giants WWL ()

Will LSG’s explosive top order face their toughest test yet?

Team news and likely XIIsParthiv had said GT played four seamers against Royals because of the conditions in Ahmedabad. Lucknow is unlikely to be as seamer-friendly and Washington is likely to replace one of the quicks.Gujarat Titans (probable XII): 1 Shubman Gill (capt), 2 B Sai Sudharsan, 3 Jos Buttler (wk), 4 Sherfane Rutherford, 5 Shahrukh Khan, 6 Rahul Tewatia, 7 Washington Sundar, 8 Rashid Khan, 9 R Sai Kishore, 10 Mohammed Siraj, 11 Prasidh Krishna, 12 Arshad Khan/Kulwant KhejroliyaLucknow Super Giants are unlikely to change their XII from the last game. They have the option of bringing in left-arm spinner Manimaran Siddharth to challenge the two right-handers in GT’s top order.Lucknow Super Giants (probable XII): 1 Aiden Markram, 2 Mitchell Marsh, 3 Nicholas Pooran, 4 Rishabh Pant (capt, wk), 5 Ayush Badoni, 6 David Miller, 7 Abdul Samad, 8 Shardul Thakur, 9 Avesh Khan, 10 Akash Deep, 11 Digvesh Rathi, 12 Ravi BishnoiThe big questionRashid has bowled only one over in the powerplay so far this season. Marsh, Markram and Pooran have sub-120 strike rates against him, Pooran has even been dismissed twice in 66 balls. Rashid has only started to rediscover his form after a poor start to this season, but should he be brought on to bowl earlier given the strength of LSG’s top order? In the spotlight – Digvesh Rathi and Prasidh KrishnaFive of Digvesh Rathi’s seven T20s have come in IPL 2025. His celebrations might have landed him in hot waters but his impact cannot be written off. His economy rate of 7.75 is easily the best of all of LSG’s bowlers so far this season. In LSG’s last game, against Kolkata Knight Riders where 472 runs runs were scored, his economy was 8.25. While Ravi Bishnoi remains the primary legspinner in the side, Rathi’s position is only rising.Digvesh Rathi celebrated in a new way – by writing on the ground•Associated Press

Prasidh Krishna’s pace and height have offered Titans a unique advantage in the middle overs. He has been able to hit the middle of the pitch and get extra bounce to challenge batters on the back foot. He is coming off five wickets in the last games and is a threat to LSG’s middle order.Pitch and conditionsThere are slight chances of rain in the evening but a large stoppage is unlikely. In terms of the pitch, 15 wickets have been taken by pacers so far in Lucknow and spinners only six. Lucknow did roll out a black-soil surface after Pant and LSG mentor Zaheer Khan had expressed disappointment over the lack of assistance for the spinners during their loss to Punjab Kings. But the spinners took only two of the ten wickets to fall in the 472-run game. They might have a better outing this time considering this is a day game.Stats and Trivia LSG and GT are also the only teams to have scored more than 500 runs in the middle-overs this season GT, in this phase have lost only 8 wickets, the joint-least with Delhi Capitals Rashid has dismissed Pant three times and conceded 114 runs in 103 balls across 15 innings. He has a great record against David Miller too, whom he has dismissed 4 times in 59 balls while conceding only 67 runsQuotes”The games that we have won, we’ve kind of found ways to win, been under pressure with our bowling and batting at certain stages and getting through that and still winning, so for me that’s the encouraging part for the team.”
“Ashish Nehra is a very compassionate about the players, and that’s why it seems like [he is animated] from the outside. He cares a lot for people around him. It is good to see the combination of Ashish Nehra and Shubman Gill – they work very well and it’s like hand in glove.”

Liverpool could forget about Ederson with bid for £60m “Rolls-Royce”

da esoccer bet: The stream of summer transfer chatter is starting to flow with speed, but Liverpool have not yet entered the rapids as Arne Slot acclimatises to his role as Anfield head coach and FSG make headway in identifying targets capable of making a real impact.

da jogodeouro: In fairness, Liverpool have always conducted their business in a cloak of secrecy, often evading the all-seeing eye of Fabrizio Romano before news surges into the room like a steam engine, sending the Reds faithful into instantaneous overdrive.

So, patience. Let's take a breath, have a seat. Michael Edwards is something of an expert and no doubt has some exciting stuff planned this summer. So when reports from France this week suggesting Liverpool were close to agreeing to a deal with Atalanta for Ederson, tough-tackling midfielder, were debunked by a downright James Pearce, disappointment should be put to one side.

Liverpool, it should be known, are fully intent on improving Slot's squad before the start of the 2024/25 campaign, with a centre-back, midfielder and wide forward all needed, at least one of which will likely fall into the category of 'marquee'.

Ederson's a good player, instrumental in winning the Europa League, but Liverpool are looking for a player to dominate for an age, and they appear to be mulling over a move for a talented young player who could serve that purpose.

Liverpool lining up midfield addition

According to Football Insider, Edwards and Liverpool's transfer team have held internal discussions over Alan Varela as they weigh up a bid for the 22-year-old Porto star.

The Reds signed Wataru Endo from Stuttgart for £16m last summer but there is a need for a long-term star at No. 6 and Varela would fit the bill.

Liverpool's Wataru Endo.

However, with a £60m buyout clause in his contract, the Argentinian would take a sizeable portion out of Liverpool's summer war chest – let's take a look at whether it would be worth the effort…

Alan Varela's season in numbers

Endo, to his credit, has done a brilliant job after his surprise move to Merseyside, featuring 44 times across all competitions, winning Liverpool's December Player of the Month honour and being praised as a "machine" and "footballing-wise exceptional" by recently departed manager Jurgen Klopp.

Alan Varela for Porto.

But he has his limitations. Aged 31, Endo is not a long-term option. He's industrious and composed but he lacks mobility and the complete, athletic skill set that the likes of Rodri and Declan Rice boast.

Varela, despite sitting in the early stage of his career and yet to ply his trade in a top-five European league, has been brilliant in Sergio Conceicao's side, featuring 44 times since joining from Boca Juniors one year ago and starting all eight of Porto's Champions League fixtures, excellent across two legs as they suffered an agonising penalties defeat against Arsenal in the last 16.

His ability to dictate tempo and flow in the centre of the park is one of his brightest qualities, and, moreover, his confident, tigerish style passed the test against Arsenal earlier in 2024, holding his own and impressing with ball-playing and defensive strength against a fearsome Gunners side.

He's also got the trappings of a world-class passer, ranking among the top 8% of central midfielders across divisions similar to Liga Portugal for pass completion and the top 5% for passes per 90, as per FBref.

Despite his deep-lying role, he is creative and eager to find advancing peers with regularity, completing 90% of his passes in the Portuguese top flight this season but also creating five big chances and averaging one key pass per game, as per Sofascore.

Dubbed a "Rolls-Royce of a player" by talent scout Jacek Kulig while he was still cutting his teeth in his South American homeland, the 5 foot 10 star would be a credit to Liverpool's first team, and he would certainly be the option to go for over Ederson.

Why Varela would be perfect for Arne Slot

Ederson played a defining role in Atalanta's dominant dismantling of Bayer Leverkusen in the Conference League final, ending Xabi Alonso's side's hopes of footballing immortality with an undefeated, treble-winning campaign.

The 24-year-old Brazilian made 2.3 tackles and won 5.5 duels on average in Serie A this season but he only completed 84% of his passes and that's while creating a key pass once every two matches.

That's half the output of Varela, and given that Ederson is two years the Argentine's senior, it might be worth opting for the player with a higher ceiling, especially given that Endo and Mac Allister can ease the burden at the base of the midfield next season.

One of the chief reasons that Slot was picked to succeed Klopp was his high press and crisp possession-based style, a hybrid of sorts between the German and Pep Guardiola.

But this front-footed style will be curbed by Endo. By no fault of his own, the Japan star is not the ideal No. 6 to supercharge the newly-arrived Anfield system.

Mats Wieffer, Feyenoord's central midfielder and general of Slot's midfield over the past few years, is not the most precise passer in the game but ranks among the top 10% of positional peers across divisions similar to the Dutch Eredivisie for passes attempted, the top 6% for progressive passes and the top 11% for tackles per 90.

Slot needs energy and he needs exuberance, and in a talented young player in Varela, he would find exactly what he is looking for.

South Africa and New Zealand then tour India over December and January, and one question has been whether Rohit and Kohli continue playing the format with the 2027 ODI World Cup still quite far away.Ricky Ponting, though, believes Rohit certainly has some unfinished business in the ODI game. “I think probably the fact that they lost the last one [2023 World Cup in India] and he was captain, that might be the thing that’s playing on the back of his mind,” Ponting told . “Just have one more crack at trying to win the T20 World Cup, the Champions Trophy, and the ODI World Cup. I mean when you see him play like he played in the Champions Trophy final, you wouldn’t say that his time is up just yet.”Santner, Bracewell, Ravindra zoom upNew Zealand’s players made significant gains as well after their team’s run to the final of the Champions Trophy. da brdice: Jô chegou a oscilar nesta temporada, mas desde a chegada do técnico Sylvinho voltou a ter uma boa sequência de jogos, fazendo com que ele atingisse a marca de 200 no fim do ano passado e, nove meses depois, esteja prestes a alcançar a partida de número 250.
