Spurs could land their own Cole Palmer in "magic" £51m gem

da heads bet: Do Tottenham Hotspur supporters approach kitchen-sink time with greedy anticipation, confident that their side will find that late, all-changing goal to continue a promising campaign?

da dobrowin: Ange Postecoglou has certainly inculcated a sense of belief, drive and determination that has seen Spurs find a big moment in late stages on numerous occasions.

It doesn't always work out, but against Luton Town on Saturday, skipper Heung-min Son popped up with a late strike to hand his side victory.

Despite the summer sale of Harry Kane, the London club have been impressive in attack, after their fashion, but seek further firepower to carry the revival into the forthcoming campaign and build upon a solid base.

Spurs eyeing summer signings

After observation, Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy will be of the opinion that improvements are required across multiple positions, and while Postecoglou has created an exciting attacking squadron, the anticipated return to European competition calls for depth.

As such, according to German outlet BILD – via Sport Witness – Spurs are attentive to Dani Olmo's situation with RB Leipzig, with the Spaniard's €60m (£51m) release clause active this summer.

Dani Olmo for RB Leipzig

Bryan Gil is expected to leave Postecoglou's squad this summer and Tottenham will hope that they will clinch Champions League qualification and entice Olmo to join, with Manchester City interested in the creative midfielder.

Dani Olmo's style of play

RB Leipzig have got a lot of talent in their ranks but currently sit in fifth place in the German Bundesliga, three points behind Borussia Dortmund in the top four.

Olmo is a talented and sought-after player but he has seen his progress across the past several seasons punctuated by interfering injuries, only starting 12 top-flight fixtures this term.

Still, as per Sofascore, he has created seven big chances this season to complement an impressive return of three goals and four assists, also averaging 1.3 key passes, 1.2 dribbles and 3.5 ball recoveries per game.

A versatile attacking midfielder and noted for his "magic" ability by talent scout Jacek Kulig, Olmo is capable on alternate flanks but finds his playmaking at its zenith when situated in the No. 10 spot, hailed for his "exceptional abilities" by Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann, formerly of Leipzig.

His multi-angled attacking approach is exactly what Tottenham need, offering a direct threat while supplementing his teammates, having clinched 28 goals and 33 assists for RB Leipzig in total.

Why Spurs are interested in Dani Olmo

Tottenham might already have an elite playmaker in James Maddison but Giovani Lo Celso will possibly leave the club this summer and is out of contract at the end of the 2024/25 campaign anyway, with little chance of a resolution.

As per FBref, Olmo ranks among the top 22% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for total shots and assists and the top 25% for interceptions per clearances per 90.

Olmo might not quite be sparkling right now but he's been inhibited by these niggling muscular issues; put those firmly behind him and he will no doubt return to the first-class form that has led to interest from some of Europe's heavyweights in the past.

His stylistic similarities to Maddison highlight the success that might be found in welcoming him to the fold, but perhaps more intriguing is the semblance with Chelsea's Cole Palmer, who signed for the Stamford Bridge side from Manchester City for an initial £40m on transfer deadline day last summer.

Spurs may already have their own Bellingham in teen prodigy who City want

Palmer ranks among the top 7% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists, the top 13% for shot-creating actions, the top 12% for pass completion and the top 10% for progressive passes per 90, showcasing his crisp passing and technical attributes that place him in the same bracket as Olmo, albeit performing at a far superior level right now.

He might not be playing his finest football right now, but what matters is that Olmo carries a protean threat with a natural flair and guile on the ball that would open up a dimension to this building Tottenham team.

Dani Olmo playing for Spain

He's not quite got the raw ball-delivering expertise of Maddison, nor has he the same lofty energy of Dejan Kulusevski – few do – but Olmo offers elite deftness in possession, dropping his shoulder and darting with a stag's gait through the lines.

Dynamic would be the apt phrasing: described as a "good finisher" by former La Masia coach Denis Silva Puig and well regarded for his mentality and lifting effect on his peers. Leipzig have won the past two DFB Pokal titles, with Olmo grabbing three goals and five assists from eight matches during this run.

Palmer too is tactically flexible and polished, complete, in his skill set. An attacking midfielder with much to prove after leaving Manchester City for struggling Chelsea, he has belied his age and inexperience to incredibly chalk up 16 goals and 12 assists from his opening 35 appearances as a Blue.

Chelsea have seen the impact of signing such a player, have drank from the cup of Palmer's prodigious quality, and while Mauricio Pochettino's side are struggling, Palmer certainly is not.

Postecoglou has the tactical wherewithal to make his move and bring Olmo to the club, offering an ostensibly higher calibre of football and a chance to take his promising career to the next level.

At £51m, it's a bit of a no-brainer. Manchester City might be interested but if the Lilywhites act incisively, Olmo will surely wind up down N17.

Surrey claim first win of season as Dan Moriarty, Will Jacks give fans something to cheer

Kia Oval crowd sees Hampshire restricted to below-par total on rain-affected night

Surrey 81 for 1 (Jacks 45*) beat Hampshire 77 for 5 (Moriaty 2-12) by nine wickets (DLS method)County cricket’s first live attendance of the Covid-shortened season saw Hashim Amla and Will Jacks steer Surrey to a nine-wicket victory against Hampshire in a Vitality Blast south group match affected by rain.It was Surrey’s first win of the summer, following four Bob Willis Trophy defeats plus a tie, a no-result and a defeat from their opening three Blast fixtures, and they were always in charge once Gareth Batty had won the toss and opted to field.Chasing 80 on Duckworth Lewis Stern, after Hampshire’s innings was delayed and then disrupted by the weather, Amla and Jacks put on 64 in 8.1 overs to ensure there would be no alarms as they chased down a total that always looked inadequate. It took until the fourth ball of the final over, though, for Jacks to finish off Hampshire when, after six runs were still required from the last six balls, bowled by Ryan Stevenson, he top-edged a pull for his fifth four to reach 45 not out from 31 balls. Laurie Evans was 4 not out at the other end.Former South Africa batsman Amla took an immediate liking to Pakistan’s 20-year-old left-arm fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi, making his Hampshire debut by conceding 30 from his three overs, with fours over extra cover and a lovely on-drive.Jacks, meanwhile, twice lofted Afridi high over extra cover for boundaries and he also swept Mason Crane’s legspin for four before Amla thin-edged an attempted reverse sweep at Crane to keeper Lewis McManus to go for a 27-ball 29.Some much-needed late hitting from Sam Northeast and James Fuller had earlier hauled Hampshire to 77 for 5 from their eventual 11 overs. Northeast made a run-a-ball 31 before being caught at long-on in the final over, while Fuller smashed a flat six over square leg off an excellent Gus Atkinson bouncer with a flashing blade to finish 17 not out.Jamie Overton’s only over, on his debut for Surrey on loan ahead of his permanent move from Somerset this winter, went for 12 runs as Northeast cut and forced successive fours in the innings’ penultimate over.Surrey were permitted to allow 2500 members into the Kia Oval, as part of the government’s ongoing process of getting live crowds back to sporting events, but those spectators initially found themselves frustrated rather than feeling fortunate as bad weather hit south London.A long burst of applause rang around the ground, however, when Batty led out the Surrey team to begin a match initially reduced to 17 overs-per-side, following an hour’s delay to the original start time of 6.30pm.But, after just three overs, more rain arrived to drive the players off with Hampshire 21 for 1. Reece Topley had bowled two tidy overs for ten runs but it was Jacks who grabbed the first wicket to fall, and his first in T20 cricket, when he turned an off break to have Tom Alsop stumped for 1 attempting a big hit from down the pitch. On the resumption, at 8.25pm, slow left-arm spinner Dan Moriarty bowled Felix Organ for 9 and then, in his second over, was delighted to see Rory Burns slide around the deep square leg ropes to hold a tremendous catch when Joe Weatherley swept powerfully.Weatherley had hit the first boundary of the innings in the previous over, the fifth, with a sweep at Batty’s offspin, but it was Surrey’s 42-year-old captain who then reduced Hampshire to 41 for 4 by having McManus held at point for 2 from a reverse sweep. Moriarty ended with the impressive figures of 2 for 12 from three overs. The only crowds previously allowed into county grounds this summer before tonight were at the Kia Oval and Edgbaston for two pre-season friendly contests in late July between, respectively, Surrey and Middlesex and Warwickshire and Worcestershire.

Guardiola pushing Man City to sign £40m full back in January transfer window

da realsbet: Pep Guardiola is pushing Manchester City to make a move for a “great” £40 million defender, according to a recent report. January could be an intriguing month for the Blues, as their unusually poor form in the Premier League could mean they are active in the transfer window.

Man City must regret selling £80m star in the making who's like Musiala

Manchester City now may regret offloading a star who’s set the Premier League alight.

ByEthan Lamb Dec 10, 2024 Man City transfer news

da aviator aposta: One player who is on City’s radar but may not be a transfer that happens until the summer is German midfielder Florian Wirtz. The Premier League side are desperate to sign the Bayer Leverkusen talisman, and to get a deal done, they are willing to offer some players as makeweights in exchange for Wirtz.

As well as being interested in Wirtz, City are now pushing to sign Ederson from Serie A side Atalanta. The Brazilian has become a key player for his side in recent times, and his performances have put him on the radar of Premier League teams.

The Blues are keen on a deal as they see the tough-tackling midfielder as an ideal replacement for Rodri, who looks set to miss the rest of the campaign. Signing Ederson will not be a cheap deal for the Premier League champions, as he could cost them £42 million.

Guardiola pushing Man City to sign USA star

According to Give Me Sport, Manchester City are seriously considering a move to sign Antonee Robinson from Fulham in January. The USA international has become one of the best-performing left-backs in the Premier League in recent years, as the Cottagers establish themselves as a mid-table team.

Fulham full-back Antonee Robinson

Robinson, who has been labelled a “great athlete” by manager Marco Silva, has been at Craven Cottage since 2020, during which he has been firmly Fulham’s number one choice for the left-back spot. The 27-year-old played 37 times in the league last season, during which he grabbed six assists, and he has continued that form into this campaign, as he’s got four assists to his name in 15 games.

Robinson has become a key player for club and country, and now this report states that City are considering a move for him in the New Year. The Blues are looking at signing a new left-back, and Robinson is among the names being considered as Guardiola is keen to bolster an area that has become a problem.

The left-back is under contract at Craven Cottage until 2028, meaning Fulham are under no pressure to sell. But City are refusing to rule out a formal proposal for Robinson in January, as signing Robinson would allow Josko Gvardiol to move back into the centre of defence, which is his preferred position. Guardiola’s side are not alone, though, as Liverpool are also keen on signing the defender who has a £40 million price tag on his head.

Their own Palmer: Ange must rue selling Spurs’ "unbelievable" game-changer

da dobrowin: They say a week is a long time in football, and in Tottenham Hotspur’s case, a fortnight is a lifetime.

da bet esporte: It was almost two weeks ago that Ange Postecoglou’s side were wiping the floor with Premier League Champions Manchester City at the Etihad, and at full-time, there was an expectation that the North Londoners would then go on a run.

However, in the three games since, the Lilywhites have drawn at home with AS Roma and Fulham and lost away to Bournemouth, which makes the prospect of facing Chelsea and the sensational Cole Palmer tomorrow afternoon all the more terrifying.

What makes it worse is that a player Postecoglou sold in the summer is now playing out of his skin and could well have been Spurs’ own Palmer.

Spurs' summer sales

So, before we get to the player in question, let’s look at how some of Spurs’ other departures are getting on this season, starting with someone who’s not having a great time: Emerson Royal.

emerson-royal-tottenham-hotspur-crystal-palace-premier-league-outstanding-revive-mason

The Brazilian full-back joined Serie A giants AC Milan for around £13m, which Italian football writer Kaustubh Pandey described as “a deal for the ages,” although not for the right reasons.

In all, the 25-year-old has made 16 appearances for the Rossoneri so far, in which he’s failed to score or assist a goal and been so poor that Italian football expert James Horncastle described the fee paid as a charitable ‘donation’ ‘to make his wish to become a footballer come true’ – ouch.

Someone faring a little better away from North London is centre-back Joe Rodon, who joined Leeds United for around £10m at the same time as Archie Gray went the other way.

So far, the 47-capped Welshman has made 19 appearances for the Peacocks, who currently sit third in the Championship, just a point off of second place and three off of first.

However, while the 27-year-old defender is doing well in West Yorkshire, another former Lilywhites ace is doing even better and is showing that he could have been Postecoglou’s own Palmer.

The former Spurs ace playing like Palmer

So, to get straight to the point, the former Spurs ace in question is midfield marvel Giovani Lo Celso.

Yes, the Argentine international, who finally departed N17 for good this summer to join La Liga side Real Betis for £8.4m, has been in utterly sensational form and is beginning to play like Palmer.

Now, we say this for a couple of reasons. The first is that, like the Chelsea star, the “unbelievable” 28-year-old, as dubbed by journalist Alex Mitton, has become an increasingly important goal threat for his team this season and has already racked up six in just 11 appearances while also providing an assist for good measure.

However, the other reason is that, according to FBref, which compares players in similar positions in Europe’s top five leagues, the Champions League and Europa League, the Englishman is statistically the fourth most similar attacking midfielder or winger to the Argentine this season.

We can better understand how they reached this conclusion by examining the underlying numbers in which they rank closely, metrics including but not limited to expected assists, non-penalty goals, shots on target, key passing and goal-creating actions, all per 90.

Ultimately, while the club couldn’t have foreseen such an uptick in form, it certainly feels like they could do with someone like Lo Celso in the squad right about now, and the fact he is performing similarly to Palmer at the moment is just further evidence of his incredible talent.

Nic Maddinson’s suspected serious knee injury has compounded Melbourne Renegades’ woes after they suffered a fourth consecutive BBL defeat. Renegades copped a five-wicket loss to the red-hot Perth Scorchers at Marvel Stadium on Sunday, continuing their slide after a positive 3-0 start to the season.Aaron Finch’s 65 off 48 had given the home side a sniff, steering them to 155 for 6 from their 20 overs, with Scorchers quick AJ Tye taking 3 for 32 to restrict the hosts. But Josh Inglis and Cameron Bancroft got Scorchers over the line in a controlled chase.Scorchers reached the target with two balls to spare, despite the efforts of Renegades quick Kane Richardson. It was Scorchers’ fourth straight win, firming up their spot at the top of the table.Maddinson’s slump continued when he was out for a first-ball duck, giving him a total of just three runs in his last five innings. His day got worse when he injured his knee while fielding during the second over of Scorchers’ chase, twisting his left leg as he turned to throw the ball. The 31-year-old immediately slumped to the turf and was assessed for several minutes before being driven off the field. Renegades are yet to determine the full extent of the injury, with Maddinson set to be sent for scans.Wicketkeeper Peter Handscomb also failed to see out the match, substituted off after 16 overs as he struggled with the effects of the soaring temperature.Andrew Tye was Player of the Match after taking 3 for 32•Getty Images

Import opener Faf du Plessis and Bancroft gave Scorchers a solid platform in their chase.Richardson was on a hat-trick when he removed Adam Lyth with the last ball of one over and du Plessis with the first of another, but he could not complete the feat.Bancroft was brilliantly run out by Will Sutherland, but Inglis took the reins and put his side on the brink of victory. There was late drama when Inglis unsuccessfully reviewed an lbw decision and was given out before Nick Hobson hit the winning run off Sutherland.Earlier, Finch became the second player to reach 3000 career runs in the BBL, joining all-time leading scorer Chris Lynn. Tye was the pick of Scorchers’ bowlers claiming the key wickets of Finch, Handscomb and Mackenzie Harvey. Jason Behrendorff also bowled superbly claiming 1 for 17 from four overs.

Ex-Celtic man who knows Premier League star "personally" says he dreams of Parkhead move

da poker: Adding fuel to the fire from the summer, one former Celtic star has now claimed that a Premier League player dreams of completing a move to the Bhoys.

Update on Brendan Rodgers' Celtic future

da bet nacional: Whilst much of the change has been going on at their Old Firm rivals as of late, Celtic could yet be in for some change of their own.

The Hoops have endured a frustrating start to the campaign and now sit two points behind unexpected leaders, Hearts, in the Scottish Premiership table. Meanwhile, their European form hasn’t been much better, having failed to win both of their opening two Europa League games.

Questions have, therefore, been asked about Brendan Rodgers’ future. The manager has less than a year left on his current deal and is yet to put pen to paper on a fresh contract. If nothing changes, he will not be in the Celtic dugout this time next year.

A meeting was also recently held between the club and fan groups, in which Celtic chief Michael Nicholson claimed that Rodgers sanctions all signings after a summer which is yet to prove successful.

Talks are reportedly ongoing with Rodgers about his future and there remains hope that he could yet stay put, but there’s certainly some unrest creeping in at Celtic.

What’s more, if it is the manager in charge of sanctioning transfers, then the verdict of one former Celtic player about a current Premier League star should be music to Rodgers’ ears ahead of 2026.

Mulgrew claims McGinn dreams of Celtic move

According to former defender Charlie Mulgrew, John McGinn dreams of moving to Celtic even after a transfer away from Aston Villa failed to come into fruition over the summer.

Mulgrew told talkSPORT:

The Scotland international would certainly get Celtic’s transfer history back on track and away from recent flops, but — as Mulgrew said — it remains to be seen whether the Bhoys can secure his signature.

McGinn earns around £120,000-per-week at Villa Park right now, so he’d have to take a dramatic pay cut to seal a move back up north.

His deal expires in 2027, though, so perhaps the Villa captain could entertain a switch to Glasgow once his Birmingham stay comes to an end in under two years — unless he pens an extension.

At that point, a deal for McGinn would almost certainly be out of Celtic’s reach.
