Emery and Monchi believe they can turn £51m man into a star at Aston Villa

da bet nacional: Aston Villa football president Monchi and manager Unai Emery are both in agreement they can get the very best out of a £51 million transfer target, with the club apparently now joining the race for his signature.

Aston Villa agree eight transfer deals in busy early summer

da apostebet: The Villans have wasted no time in restructuring their squad after qualifying for the Champions League, with club chiefs shaking hands on eight deals in total already.

Aston Villa now tempted to bid for 21-goal PSG target who'll cost just £40m

He[s just enjoyed the season of his life.

ByEmilio Galantini Jul 6, 2024

Former star Douglas Luiz, young midfielder Tim Iroegbunam and Morgan Sanson have all parted company with the club, bringing in a total of around £54 million to help balance the books and ease the PSR pressure after Villa announced a near-£120 million loss for 2022/2023.

Coming the other way, Villa signed Samuel Iling-Junior and Enzo Barrenechea from Juventus for around £19 million, with Lewis Dobbin, Ian Maatsen and Ross Barkley also joining the pair for a total fee of £72 million.

All of Aston Villa's confirmed summer arrivals

Fee paid (via Transfermarkt)

Ian Maatsen

£38 million

Samuel Iling-Junior

£12 million

Lewis Dobbin

£10 million

Enzo Barrenechea

£7 million

Ross Barkley

£5 million

These agreements have allowed Villa to register a net-spend of just £17 million, which is a big help in regard to PSR, but supporters will be frustrated to see a pivotal player of last season in Luiz depart for Juventus.

The Brazilian bagged 10 goals and 10 assists in all competitions under Emery last season, and leaves a gaping hole in quality as Villa prepare to compete in Europe's most prestigious competition for the first time in decades.

His dynamism and creativity in midfield will be sorely missed, and it is now up to Monchi to source star alternatives to the Olympic gold medalist who can provide a similar impetus.

Atletico Madrid star Joao Felix, who may well depart the Wanda Metropolitano for a reasonable bid, is apparently on Villa's radar now. Reports in the last few days have claimed that Emery's side could hijack Benfica's pursuit of Felix, who looks set to be on the move again following successive loan spells away at Chelsea and Barcelona in the last two seasons.

The La Liga side are hoping to recuperate a portion of the £113 million fee they paid for Felix in 2019, with Atletico setting a price tag of around £51 million according to MARCA.

Emery and Monchi convinced they can turn Felix into a star at Villa

Spanish news outlet Sport have another update this week, and they say the 24-year-old is very highly-rated in the Midlands.

joao-felix-villa

Indeed, it is believed both Monchi and Emery agree they can get the best out of Felix at Aston Villa. The Premier League side, as a result, have joined the race for his signature this summer – but it is unclear how much they're willing to pay amid their PSR concerns.

Felix's best ever season saw him rack up 15 goals and seven assists in just 26 Primeira Liga appearances for Benfica over 2018/2019, just before he joined Atletico. If Villa formalise their interest, they'd be hoping for a similar return.

Ashton Turner hopes return to bowling will boost T20 World Cup chances

He hopes for more opportunity with the ball during the five-match T20I series in Bangladesh

Andrew McGlashan01-Aug-2021Ashton Turner hopes a return to the bowling crease will boost his chances of being part of Australia’s T20 World Cup squad.Turner has undergone multiple shoulder operations during his career, the most recent two years ago, and has rarely been seen with the ball. However, across the last two ODIs in West Indies he sent down 14 overs, claiming two wickets and impressing with his control. It was the most he had bowled since the end of 2016-17 Australian domestic season when he delivered 41 overs in a Sheffield Shield match against New South Wales. He now hopes for more opportunity with the ball during the five-match T20I series in Bangladesh, starting on Tuesday, which is a final chance to impress the selectors before the World Cup squad is named.”Bowling is something I’ve always loved and unfortunately due to my shoulder injuries I haven’t been able to contribute much in games,” he said. “It’s been almost two years since my last operation, so I feel as good about my bowling as I have in a long time.”Although I haven’t been able to bowl a lot in games, behind the scenes I’ve been working a lot at training and it’s nice in conditions that suited spin bowling and to be another option for the captain. Hoping that my bowling workloads can increase from here.”Don’t think I’ve bowled eight overs in a game for more than four years…no doubt that will take some time. Feel like I’ve done everything I can over the recent periods and I’m starting to enjoy it as much as I used to.”Having a second string could be a deciding factor in selection although Turner’s primary job will remain with the bat. He is seen as one of the players who could be Australia’s finisher but he only played twice in the recent T20I series against the West Indies. His best innings came in the first ODI when he made 49 while the performance that put him on the map internationally was his 84 off 43 balls against India in Mohali in 2019.To date, he has made 87 runs from 89 balls across nine T20I innings. The 22 balls he faced in the third ODI in St Lucia is the most he has managed in a single game, in a position where the demands are often for instant results very quickly, but he believes his role in domestic cricket for Perth Scorchers stands him in good stead.Ashton Turner bowled 14 overs across two ODIs against West Indies•AFP

“There’s no secret until you’ve been able to walk out in high-pressure situations and perform, training can’t replicate that pressure,” he said. “I’m fortunate that for a number of years now I’ve been able to experience some close games in the middle order and try to finish innings. With that experience, comes confidence and that’s not something that can be found at training.”In the West Indies, he also took the chance to pick the brains of Andre Russell who is a master of the closing overs and has also lent on the recalled Dan Christian in the Australian dressing room.'[Speaking to] Andre Russell on the back of the West Indies tour, being able to get some insights from him about how he goes about his game. He’s probably the best in the world at the moment at finishing innings and he’s another one playing T20 cricket only,” Turner said. “The message coming from Andre is that he’s trying to replicate the situations he has in games and challenge him as much as possible.”Dan Christian is someone I’ve played a lot of cricket with but not necessarily spent a lot of time in the same dressing. So I have spoken to him about his transition from playing all formats of the game to now plying his trade as one of the best middle-order finishers in the domestic circuit. It’s interesting to see a change in his philosophy around batting and how he models his training and that’s certainly evolved over the last five years.”The five-match T20I series against Bangladesh that begins on Tuesday will be played across seven days in Dhaka. Australia are expected to be captained by Matthew Wade in the absence of Aaron Finch who has returned home with a knee injury.

Josh Philippe makes his mark ahead of West Indies T20I series

Australia’s top-order batters have all made some runs across the two intra-squad matches

Josh Philippe cut loose in Australia’s second intra-squad warm-up match in St Lucia while Matthew Wade and Moises Henriques also hit rapid half-centuries.As with the first match on Monday, Australia’s 20-player squad was split into two sides of 10 with a batter from each able to go in twice. However, unlike the previous outing this one was played as a proper T20 ahead of the opening game against West Indies on Friday. In an indication of a potential opening pair for that game, Wade swapped sides to go in alongside captain Aaron Finch. He dominated an opening stand of 65 in less than seven overs before a mix-up had Finch run out.Wade went on to make 52 off 34 balls before falling to Ashton Agar and was the player allotted a second innings but was stumped for a duck against Adam Zampa. The chase for the Australia II side was powered by Philippe who made his international debut earlier this year in New Zealand after two outstanding BBL campaigns. In that series he was at No. 3 before opening in the final match but indicated after this outing that he was expecting a role lower down the order against West Indies. Here surged along to 67 off 43 in an innings that included nine fours and a six before Henriques, who had been part of the side against India last year before being named in the Test squad for the postponed South Africa tour, guided the chase home with 51 off 35 balls alongside Ben McDermott.Mitchell Marsh – who made 31 off 21 balls for Australia I to follow a half-century two days ago – batted at No. 3 in both warm-up matches which could indicate his starting position while Henriques will be in the frame for the middle order in the absence of Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis.Mitchell Starc was the most successful bowler of the evening with 3 for 30 from his four overs which included removing Marsh and Ashton Turner with consecutive deliveries. Zampa sent down his four overs for 25.The first two T20Is of the series will be played back to back on Friday and Saturday with all five games taking place in St Lucia where a small number of fully vaccinated spectators will be allowed to attend.

Southampton now looking to land bargain deal to sign "great" contract rebel

da bwin: Gearing up for the top-flight, Southampton are now reportedly looking to land a Premier League ace who is yet to put pen to paper on a new deal at his current club this summer.

Southampton transfer news

da fezbet: The Saints have already got their summer business underway with the arrival of Adam Lallana. The former Liverpool man has completed a return to St Mary's 10 years after the decision to swap his boyhood club for Anfield. Returning at the end of his career, he will hope that his veteran-like experience rubs off on Southampton as soon as pre-season and leads Russell Martin's side to Premier League safety at the first time of asking.

Speaking to the club's official website after putting pen to paper, Lallana said: “When I started speaking to Russell and understood there was a little bit of interest, it was something I knew straightaway felt right in my head and in my heart that it was something I needed to pursue, and it came through in the end.

“I’m extremely happy to come back to where it all started. Although it sounds like a bit of a fairy tale, in my head there’s still a job to do and I’m really confident I’ve still got a lot to give to this football club.”

Southampton eye £6m reunion with forward who can be "as good as it gets"

He will be a familiar face at St Mary’s.

ByTom Coates Jun 19, 2024

The Premier League incomings seem unlikely to end there, however. According to Jack Rosser of The Sun, Southampton are now looking to land a deal to sign Bobby Decordova-Reid following his failed contract talks with Fulham. As things stand, the winger is set to become a free agent at the end of June, allowing the likes of Southampton to swoop in and land a free deal for Martin's side and his side this summer.

"Great" Decordova-Reid can replace Adams

Amid all of the promotion celebrations remained Southampton's Che Adams problem, which looks unlikely to reach a resolution. In identical fashion to Decordova-Reid, Adams is set to leave St Mary's as a free agent at the end of the month following failed contract talks and as the Scot departs, the Fulham man represents an ideal alternative option for Martin.

Southampton striker Che Adams

Whilst Decordova-Reid isn't the goalscorer that Adams is, his ability to play on the right-hand side as well as in attacking and central midfield would hand Martin a different type of replacement to call on next season. Meanwhile, what the Fulham man would directly replace is Adams' invaluable Premier League experience.

Praised by Marco Silva after netting the winning goal in a 1-0 FA Cup win over Rotherham last season, the Fulham boss told Sky Sports: "He deserves it because he's a top professional, he's a vocal guy and one of the great examples we have at the club in terms of focus, able to play in any position and he's always there. He deserves all the credit and he deserves these good moments and good weeks.

"It's important for us and him because he needs these type of moments to lift his confidence and he needs the confidence to keep going in the direction we want him to be. Bobby has the capacity to score and tonight it was a great strike from him."

1 Zinedine Zidane 1989-2006

One of the most recognisable players in football is Zinedine Zidane. Throughout his playing career, Zidane stood out for clubs like Juventus and Real Madrid, as well as the French national team, due to his skill with the ball, vision and exceptional ability to score important goals.

Zidane made a name for himself as one of the best midfielders in the world at Juventus, winning two Serie A titles in Turin. His famous volleyed goal in the 2002 Champions League final, which secured the trophy for Real Madrid, was the pinnacle of his time in the Spanish capital. His tenure at Madrid also saw him win the Intercontinental Cup and La Liga, which he also led Los Blancos to as manager.

His talent was crucial to France's success at Euro 2000 and the 1998 World Cup, emerging as a key player in both competitions. His reputation as a national hero was solidified with his two headers against Brazil in the 1998 World Cup final. Despite the controversy of his red card in the World Cup final of 2006, Zidane's contributions to the sport as a whole are not overshadowed.
